UK misses out on Nike World Cup ad, Rooney red-hot with anger (maybe)
Posted on May 24, 2010 | No CommentsThat Nike World Cup ad I mentioned the other day has aired, I think, 800 million times over the past few days on TV. I know I saw it at least once during the Champions League final at the weekend (which Inter thoroughly deserved to win). But get this: the very first time the ad aired in the UK the final six seconds of the ad never made it on the air! Someone's getting fired...

Video: Nike proves once and for all the world needs a bearded Rooney
Posted on May 21, 2010 | No CommentsWe’re about three weeks away from the beginning of the World Cup. You know this because I’ve mentioned it over and over again since 2008. Fancy Adidas this, super-advanced Nike that. And so on. Today’s edition: a three-minute Nike advert that was directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (of “Babel” fame). Even if you have no [...] -
Why are we so afraid of technology ‘ruining’ soccer? It’s not like technology hasn’t been all over the sport since its inception.
Posted on March 8, 2010 | No CommentsThere's a myth out there that technology will ruin soccer, what Pelé (and others) once called "the beautiful game." Let me ask you something: is this Cristiano Ronaldo free kick any less beautiful because he's wearing the latest Nike boots? Do you have any idea how many hours are spent developing the technology that's built into things like the Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly II? Rest assured that Nike pays top-tier engineers a handsome wage to ensure that its boots are state-of-the-art. Should we take away Gonzalo Higauaín's goal against Germany because he's wearing Adidas TechFit? Or maybe we should cancel the World Cup altogether because players will be kicking around the Jabulani, a ball that Adidas' engineers had been working on since the day after World Cup 2006? This fear of technology "ruining" soccer is not only unfounded, but it's simply ignorant of the fact that technology has always been part of the beautiful game, and it always will be. Arguing that the sport needs to be kept "pure" should result in a direct red card. (See what I did there?)

FIFA officially rules out using goal line technology at this year’s World Cup. In other news, FIFA is dumb.
Posted on March 6, 2010 | No CommentsIs FIFA the worst organization on the planet? I'd say so. World soccer bigwigs have concluded a meeting in Zurich, and they've decided against implementing goal line technology at this year's World Cup. Yes, why would you want to introduce a legitimately helpful technology into a sport that so desperately needs it? Ridiculous.

Nike Sense technology automatically adjusts stud length in your soccer boots. Hey, if it’s good enough for Cristiano Ronaldo!
Posted on March 2, 2010 | No CommentsFortune smiled upon me a few days ago, giving me the chance to check out Adidas' new equipment that'll be used during the World Cup. It was fun. Nike, on the other hand? Well, apparently the company hates us for reasons I'll never understand, so I had to find out about its new boots, also to be used in the World Cup, via some other site. I mean, come on!

Video: Castrol machine kicks soccer ball 200+ km/h, makes Cristiano Ronaldo jealous
Posted on January 25, 2010 | No CommentsIt was established at some point that Crisitano Ronaldo, the Portuguese international who gets red cards for Real Madrid, can kick a soccer ball at around 130 km/h. People keep track of this for some reason. This here robot… thing can kick a soccer ball at more than 200 km/h. Somewhere, Mr. Ronaldo is quietly [...] -
Sony will film the 2010 FIFA World Cup in 3D
Posted on December 3, 2009 | No CommentsTomorrow is the big day, fellow football fans. That's when FIFA announces the full brackets for next year's World Cup, to be held in South Africa. Yes, there's a tech angle here. Sony has said that it will film the entire tournament, from the very first kick-off until the final whistle of the final game in Johannesburg, with 3D cameras.

Sure, a £3,500 Motorola phone. Sounds good to me.
Posted on October 23, 2009 | No CommentsLet's be honest for a second here: unless we're talking about the Motorola Droid, which should be on Verizon Wireless within a few weeks, we might as well not be talking about Motorola. It'd be like talking about Real Madrid and only mentioning Granero or Drenthe and not Cristiano Ronaldo or Kaká. (Good, making references that all of 11 people will understand.) But we're going to that such a thing right now in talking about the Motorola Aura Diamond Edition. It's £3,500, which converts to, roughly, $5,700. Yeah…

Flumotion adds DVR-like ability to pause live streams for Champions League games
Posted on September 28, 2009 | No CommentsMatchday Two of the UEFA Champions League begins tomorrow. You probably already know this, because, really, who doesn't love the Champions League? Exactly. But unless you have DirecTV (here in the U.S.), you're stuck with whatever games are on the Fox networks. These games primarily feature the English teams, because, I guess, the idea is that “Americans speak English, so they probably like English teams.” Maybe it's a ratings thing, I don't know. (There's a point to all of this, believe me.) There's a company based out of Barcelona called Flumotion that has developed a new, maybe even better, way to watch the Champions League online. If you're at all familiar with a DVR, then you're familiar with the company's new setup.
