VLC 1.1.0 adds Windows and Linux GPU decoding
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsHave you launched VLC today? If so then you'll already know that it has been updated to version 1.1.0. The biggest feature in this version is the addition of GPU decoding for Windows (Vista and 7 only) and Linux users. That is, you can use that fancy GPU of yours to help decode that 1080p MKV you've got there, leaving your CPU with enough room to breathe, or whatever. Fair warning: if you're on Windows, hope you've got an nVidia GPU…

Is the Asus Rampage III Extreme the best motherboard ever or overpriced hype?
Posted on May 13, 2010 | No CommentsMoments ago, in our chatroom, I said that, if I had the money, I'd buy two Asus Rampage III Extreme motherboards: one to use and one to hang on the wall like a diploma. That's how great the thing looks. Never mind that, simply reading the stats, it's one of the best motherboard money can buy as of today—it looks as if it was designed by an extraterrestrial being, one with an advanced outer space art degree. It's a very good board, but is it OMG BEST THING EVER~!

‘Yeah, but does it run Crysis 2?’
Posted on April 9, 2010 | No CommentsThe World's video game press gathered in New York on Tuesday for the world premiere of Crysis 2, the sequel to the game whose memory lives in on the question, "Yeah, but does it run Crysis?" It's no coincidence that Crtyek, the game's developers, and EA, the game's publisher, chose New York to show off the game, with Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli calling the city "symbolic of the pride of mankind." Clearly he hasn't been to the more rubbish sections of Queens. Yes, you're in an altogether different type of jungle this go-round.

Steam for Mac: 100 percent official. Try to act surprised. (But still, yay!)
Posted on March 8, 2010 | No CommentsSteam for Mac is 100 percent official. Valve just released a statement saying it plans to launch it this April. The first games available will be Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Half-Life (and expansions), Counter Strike, and Portal. Portal 2 will be the first game released for Mac and PC simultaneously. Pretty big news, yes.

The many varied opinions of Final Fantasy XIII: Was Square Enix trying to please too many people simultaneously?
Posted on March 6, 2010 | No CommentsFinal Fantasy XIII comes out on Tuesday, but Square Enix's review embargo must have lifted yesterday, since pretty much ever Web site ever has published their review. Not us, of course. That's fine. I'll just buy the game and play it quietly by myself next week. Be that as it may, let's see what people are saying about it.

Remeber that post about the wire shoe thing?
Posted on February 22, 2010 | No CommentsExciting news, friends. I've just come back from the future, and I have some news to share. In the year 2050, the United Nations will hold a "Remember Blogging?" panel, and it will be chaired by the encapsulated head, à la Futurama, of Cory Doctorow. There will come a time in the panel when Doctorow's head turns and says, "Now, blogging wasn't all shits and giggles. Some of it was truly dreadful. Par example..." This will all be done in Mandarin Chinese, of course, which replaced English as the lingua franca of the world in 2035. Anyhow, Doctoro's head will say, "You see, I seem to remember a post on reasonably popular tech blog CrunchGear that described some sort of wire-frame shoe. It was rubbish."

Assassin’s Creed II DRM proves that Ubisoft hates your guts and wants to beat you up after school
Posted on February 17, 2010 | No CommentsFellow PC gamers: it's time to freak out. You're familiar with Ubisoft's newfangled DRM scheme that requires you be online in order to play its games, right? It's 100 percent as awful as we had thought it would be. PC Gamer recently played Assassin's Creed II, and discovered what a pain the in the ass the DRM really, truly is. Get this: every time you lose your Internet connection the game boots you to the main menu, and all progress made from the last save point is thrown out the window. This isn't an MMO, mind you, but a plain ol' single player game. In other words, no Internet, no game. Bravo, Ubisoft.

This hand sanitzer uses plasma, for cleaning
Posted on February 15, 2010 | No CommentsThe New York Times highlights the development of a new type of hand sanitizer, primarily developed for hospitals, that uses plasma to zap your hands clean. It's cheap, too, costing around $100 to build, so maybe they'll find their way into the crippled U.S. health-care system one day?

iPad? What were they thinking?!
Posted on January 28, 2010 | No CommentsThe iPad? What were they thinking? Didn't they consider the implications of people mocking the name? “How will Twitter react?” Doesn't Apple have a social media ninja on its payroll?

Michael Jackson. 3D. Grammy Awards. Rubbish.
Posted on January 21, 2010 | No CommentsI don’t know, guys, something about a Michael Jackson 3D video making its début at the Grammy Awards this year. You need to get the glasses at Target or Staples. 3D stinks, we all know. All it’s going to take is a big-shot director to give a speech at the Academy Awards saying, “Can we [...] -
World of Warcraft’s new dungeon finder just made life worth living again
Posted on December 14, 2009 | No CommentsFor me, the best part of Patch 3.3 in World of Warcraft is the new dungeon finder. I've used it a bunch in the past couple of days, and can say this: PUGing is now fun (though it'll change the way we look at guilds).
