Is the Android Market down for you? (update: it’s back)
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No CommentsAs I began the process of tearing into our brand new Droid X review unit, I ran through the nearly endless mental laundry list of all my favorite Android apps. “I’m totally going to install all of these“, I thought. Only one problem: The Android Market wasn’t showing any apps. None. No Yammers, no Yelps, [...] -
AT&T seals deal on Verizon’s divested Alltel markets
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No CommentsIt took a good, long while, but AT&T has finally closed on its acquisition of the markets Verizon was required to divest in order to get the government to agree to its purchase of Alltel early last year. For most customers, the move has no practical impact -- the markets are mostly rural -- but for affected folks, it means that they'll be able to "select a device comparable to their existing device at no additional cost" as markets get upgraded over the course of the next 12 months. Interestingly, all of the markets will be getting the 3G treatment, a sharp departure from AT&T's typical strategy of keeping unpopulated areas on EDGE -- but it probably makes sense to get them up and running on 3G since the network's got to be built up from scratch anyhow. Follow the break for the full press release.Continue reading AT&T seals deal on Verizon's divested Alltel markets

Video: AMD explains the explosive growth of the Cloud (there’s no stopping it!)
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsFrom the good folks at AMD comes this, a video explaining the wonders and joys of moving all of our computing… to the Cloud! The soundtrack makes me feel like I’m in the movie Hackers. What a simultaneously great and terrible movie. Call me a cynical old man, but I’ve never been totally “down” with keeping [...] -
Oh, by the way: iOS 4 is now available.
Posted on June 21, 2010 | No CommentsIn the off chance that you’re not already running the leaked iOS 4 gold master and haven’t been pounding the iTunes update button all morning, we figured you’d probably like to know: iOS 4 is now available for iPhones and iPod Touches. OnLive now running on Macs
Posted on June 18, 2010 | No Comments
Get thee to the downloadery for OnLive now works on Macs. You can download a small file to bring up the OnLive client and play Assassisn's Creed and other exciting games.
As you recall, OnLive is essentially a game streaming engine for Macs and PCs. All of the heavy lifting happens in the cloud and the company simply streams audio and video to your desktop. Think of it as video-on-demand on crack.

HP’s CTO makes more noises about Slate not running Windows
Posted on June 17, 2010 | No Comments
At a recent conference about tablets and the future of publishing, there was a Q&A with the CTO of HP's person systems group. While he used typical CTO doubletalk, there was a few nuggets of information to be gleaned from his rather cryptic words on the future of products like HP's Slate PC.

Apple: Sorry about all the failed iPhone 4 pre-orders, but we definitely had a good day
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsApple just released a tiny little message about its 600,000 pre-orders. First, it crowed that it got 600,000 pre-orders and then it apologized for, um, sucking the life out of the economy while people at work kept pressing the “Continue” button over and over again in a Skinner-esque effort to make the damn site work. Emblaze’s First Else in danger of becoming a smoldering slab of vaporware?
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsWe have word from an industry insider that the First Else handset running the ALP OS is in trouble. Not a surprise since Emblaze, the company behind the handset, has been dead quiet about Else ever since CES where it promised a March beta and Q2 launch. From what we hear, the software simply isn't ready and Emblaze has been unable to sign on any major carriers as the components continue to age inside a cellphone first demonstrated in November of 2009.
We've also been told that Emblaze has instructed its employees not to speak to the press about First Else. And indeed, when we called the number that formerly belonged to the Emblaze Mobile marketing manager we were greeted with a very casual "hello" without any mention of the company or the person with whom we were speaking. After confirming that we were indeed speaking with Emblaze Mobile, we related the news about First Else and were promptly transfered to the voicemail of Emblaze's legal representation. Curious don't you think? Your move Emblaze.Emblaze's First Else in danger of becoming a smoldering slab of vaporware? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Jun 2010 08:51:00 EST.
