    Apple’s A4 is like Samsung’s S5, except where it’s not

Apple iPad and Samsung Wave share a brain
Though the Apple iPad and the Samsung Wave most assuredly share the same brain, EE Times would like you to know there's more to a chip than its core -- analyzing Apple's system-on-a-chip designs in detail back to early iPhones, the publication noticed that Cupertino's silicon both has custom design quirks on top of ARM and shows heavy influence from Samsung as well. EE Times claims that while the A4 and Samsung S5PC110 are similar, there are certainly differences, enough to call the A4 a custom design. Essentially, Apple has a taken a one-size-fits-all product originally engineered to meet the needs of a broad range of OEMs and reduced its complexity, footprint, and cost to match Apple's particular goals. As far as whether PA Semi or Intrinsity had a hand in that design, the authors suggest only the latter seems very involved. What all this means for intellectual property questions is anyone's guess -- we'll let the lawyers fight that one out -- but when you encounter diehard fans that claim one's ripping off the other, at least now you'll be able to calmly explain the situation. Find the deep technical dive at our source link.

The Inkia MID500n shows love and affection by cloning the Viliv S5

People love the Viliv S5. It's a highly portable 4.8-inch Windows XP slate with 3G wireless, a webcam, and a GPS. It's great. Inkia obviously thought so too as the MID500n is nearly an exact, although a bit less powerful, copy of the S5.

The xpPhone runs Windows XP and will probably be produced

There is a good amount of quiet hesitation about the xpPhone around the interwebs this morning. It seems that everyone wants to believe that the xpPhone will make it to market, but it almost seems to good to be true. The specs list an unspecified AMD Super Mobile CPU powering the system and it will be configurable with a wide range of SSD and HDD options. But best of all, the company lets you select the 3G module needed for either AT&T, Vodafone, or Orange. That is, of course, assuming the xpPhone will actually be produced even though you can pre-order one today.

Viliv S7 spotted on Dynamism with pricing info

Think that the Viliv X70 is hot? (It is.) The unreleased S7 is shaping up to be even hotter with a 9.5 max battery life, physical keyboard, and convertible design. Our review model is currently somewhere over the Pacific so until we can post some hands-on images and first impressions, head over to Dynamism. The retailer just posted the S7 product page that not only lists all the specs but also the price and a whole bunch of photos.

The Viliv X70 is finally available and shipping from Dynamism

I loved the Viliv X70. It's a great UMPC and it's finally available for public consumption from Dynamism. The pre-orders took a little longer to ship than expected, but now that those are done, the X70 is available for everyone. Better yet, you can expect it to ship out the same day you place your order. Now, the smaller, but still hot, S5 is a different story.

The Viliv S7’s battery gets tested in Korea

Viliv went all official on the S7 a couple of weeks ago. The hot convertible tablet definitely sparked my interest, especially the 4700mAh lithium polymer batter that is said to have up to 9.5 hours. That's hot. Well, some folks in Korea got their hands on the portable and put that battery to the test. The results really aren't that surprising.

The Viliv S5 is one sexy kit with its 4.8-inch touchscreen and $599 price. But what if we told you that you can get the similarly equiped, but also slightly larger X70 for the same price? • Viliv S5 Air, HSDPA-equipped Air Ready coming to China in June

Viliv S5 Air, HSDPA-equipped Air Ready coming to China in June

The Viliv S5 has had its fair share of positive reviews, in spite of its not-as-friendly $600 price tag, and now it looks like the company's ready to up the ante with the S5 Air and S5 Air Ready, according to a report from our friends at Engadget Chinese. From what we gather, both will see an improved, haptic keyboard and support Chinese character input / handwriting input, while the Air Ready also throws in HSDPA to boot. Those in the country can pick one up reportedly in June for an as of yet unknown price, while the rest of us around the world will just have to wait and see if Viliv decides to launch it anywhere else.
