Google Mobile iPhone App gets a minor bump

If the little gleaming update notification badge on the App Store hasn’t already caught your eye, it’s time to update the ol’ Google Mobile app – especially if you’ve got an accent. The biggest change is in how the app gets things done. Where as it used to boot into Safari as soon as you tapped [...]

Newly discovered Safari bug could mean big fees for some iPhone users

Whenever you hear about bugs and exploits being discovered in the iPhone's browser, Safari, it's usually the doings of some masterful meddler who devoted hours to unearthing any flaws they could find -- not some user casually tapping around the application. Apple's pretty good at keeping things locked down, and the iPhone's got enough users that most of the nasty user-facing bugs have been flushed out. Well, except for this new one. It's not an incredibly common bug, and it doesn't seem likely that it would hit most users - but for the iPhone users this newly discovered bug does affect, it could mean huge operator fees.

iTunes update creates problems for Mac users

Uh oh, sounds like there's some bugs being introduced into the gilded cage that Mac users seem to enjoy so much. People using older versions of Safari are discovering that they can't connect to the store. Turns out that the new version of iTunes is deeply attached to Safari. This is causing problems for users of older versions, and also for users that have pre-release versions of Snow Leopard.

Snow Leopard protects you from two Trojans

It seems that Snow Leopard contains some sort of anti-malware system. But what does it really protect you from? Not much. It seems to scan for only OSX.RSPlug and OSX.Iservice and then only scans files from Safari, Mail, and a few web browsers. Usenet and Bittorrent clients are unaffected. It doesn't even actively scan the Downloads folder.

Google Latitude Comes To The iPhone. No, It Doesn’t Run In The Background.

Google has finally gotten around to launching its location-based network, Latitude on the iPhone. The service, which has been around for months on the web and Android, BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows Mobile devices may finally be ready to take off now that it's on the hottest smartphone on the market. But there's a problem — and it's a big one. Latitude, like all other third-party iPhone apps, cannot run in the background on the device. While you might think this would be extremely obvious, there is a big difference between Latitude and many of the other apps built for the iPhone: Latitude is entirely browser-based. Yes, there is no native Latitude app, and there was some thought that since the mobile version of Safari on the iPhone can technically run in the background, that maybe it would allow apps like Latitude to also do the same. Sadly, that is not the case.

Bing Mobile concept screenshots surface, looks to be a simple rebadging

Microsoft just launched Bing a few weeks ago with lots of fanfare and media coverage. Already the service has gained market share, but it seems that Microsoft is ready to be in the mobile field as well. But, unlike the Internet site which received an extreme makeover, the mobile client might simply be a rebadging if these screenshots are true. These screenshots come from an April-build of the Bing mobile app. (Kumo was the codename for Bing, btw) It should look familiar as, well, it's basically Live Search. That's not all bad though. Live Search isn't a bad app. In fact it had voice search and location-based services a while before Google's app did.
