Live from Verizon’s “Next Generation of DROID” Event

Whether we’re talking about the EVO-challenging Droid X or the QWERTY-sliding Droid 2, Verizon’s had one hell of a time keeping the latest additions to their Droid lineup under wraps lately. Of course, just because some of the juicier details have already spilled out doesn’t mean Verizon won’t make a big fuss when they’re ready for [...]

webOS 1.4.5 reportedly coming any day now… except for AT&T users

As friends very near and dear to us have confessed, "soon" is a relative term. If you'll recall, we heard from Palm (in)directly that the next webOS update was "coming soon" back in the early days of May, and here we are a fortnight from July without so much as an update regarding the update. Well, without an official update. A source over at Pre|Central has confirmed that a release of webOS 1.4.5 is "imminent," and while the primary purpose will be to get a better handle on PDK apps, it's also expected to finally bring 3D gaming to the oft-forgotten Pixi. Purportedly, carrier testing on the new OS is just about wrapped, with one unnamed operator waiting for a small bug to be squashed and AT&T simply waiting for waiting's sake. At any rate, we're still left twiddling our thumbs and hoping for the best, but at least we've a sliver of hope that our patience is about to pay off.

  • You’re Damn Right I’m A Fanboy.

    You’re Damn Right I’m A Fanboy.

As we all know by now, comments on the Internet are a fascinating thing. My favorite involve the word "fanboy." Generally speaking, it means you write (stories, tweets, whatever) about a certain topic with a positive angle. It's meant to be derogatory, but the truth is that it's so overused that it's almost completely meaningless. But for the sake of this post, I'll play ball. I have a confession to make: I'm a fanboy. Now, I didn't say specifically what I'm a fanboy of, because there have been too many titles bestowed upon me over the years. At various points over just the past few months, I've been an Apple fanboy, a Google fanboy, a Twitter fanboy, a Facebook fanboy, a Foursquare fanboy, a Gowalla fanboy, and yes, even a Microsoft fanboy. Never mind that most of companies compete with one another, so it would be hard to be a true fanboy of multiple ones without misrepresenting your fanboydom of a few of the others. We'll just say I'm a fanboy and leave it at that. And that leaves me wondering: why wouldn't you want to be a fanboy?

Video: HTC EVO 4G vs Razors, Pennys, and Screws

So, for one reason or another, you've gotta send your HTC EVO 4G in to Sprint for an exchange. What do you do? A) Wrap the EVO in the finest cloth you can find, ushering it gently into its shipping crate, or B) Attack its screen with razor blades, pennies, and screws and film the whole thing for the sake of science/entertainment. You can probably guess where this is going. (Hint: We probably wouldn't write a post about it if you went with option A.)

Ouch rumor: Project Natal will cost $150 stand-alone, part of $300 Xbox Arcade bundle this October

I sure hope for Microsoft's sake this isn't true. Word on the street is that Project Natal (which won't be the final name) will cost $150 and will launch in October. Considering Microsoft is aiming Natal at so-called casual gamers, what are the odds these people are going to shell out $150 to be able to play that paint-slinging game we've seen demoed over and over again?

BlackBerry Bold 9800 Slider shows up again, shows off its browser

Man. Unless they're trying to get this thing to leak all over the Internet, RIM is having one hell of a time keeping the BlackBerry Bold 9800 a secret. The prettier of two experimental form factors for RIM (with the uglier one being.. this thing), the Bold 9800 Slider has been leaking out in photos and videos for weeks now. Aaaand it has leaked again, this time showing the smallest of peeks at RIM's new WebKit browser.

Android’s daily shipment rate jumps up to 65,000 per day

Back in February of this year, Eric Schmidt used his keynote at Mobile World Congress to disclose an interesting tidbit: between Google and their hardware partners, they were then shipping a collective total of around 60,000 units per day. Not too bad, right? Its gotten even better. In a shareholders meeting yesterday, Eric took the time to [...]

Surprise! The HTC Legend preps for landing on AT&T by way of the FCC

The Legends are coming! The Legends are coming! I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the HTC Legend. Sure, it's not the most powerful piece of kit in HTC's armory - but it's made of friggin' metal. You could give this phone to a bear for a few hours and have it come back mostly functioning. Can you imagine a world where bears have cell phones of their very own? That's a world I'd want to live in. Though I don't believe they'll sell to bears, it looks like AT&T might be selling the Legend before too long.

Looks like Microsoft’s Kins might be heading to AT&T, T-Mobile, and many more

Looks like the Verizon/Vodafone exclusivity on the Kin 1 and Kin 2 might be short-lived -- or at least, someone at Microsoft is already prepping for the day when it's over. Days before the Kin 1 and 2 were made official, a ROM hacker known only to the internets as Conflipper published screenshots pulled from an early copy of the Kin OS. After a bit more digging, Conflipper just stumbled upon some more goodies: Kin system provisioning files for other carriers. Lots.. and lots of other carriers.

Don’t wear your watches in the shower or under water

I always had a sneaking suspicion that I was doing something horrible to my watches by wearing them in water and now I know: almost nothing under the sun is truly waterproof. This older post by a watchmaker spells it out in plain English: most waterproof watches are, at best, not waterproof at all. Also, [...]

Lawmakers have no idea what they’re talking about when it comes to technology

Oh. My. God. Over in the UK, they're in the process of passing the Digital Economy Bill, which three seconds of research suggests is analogous to the DMCA here in the U.S. Better people than I have already written extensively about why it's Truly Evil, but this is pretty funny. "Copyright owners are currently able to go on-line, look for material to which they hold the copyright and identify unauthorised sources for that material. They can then seek to download a copy of that material and in so doing capture information about the source including the Intellectual Property (IP) address..." Pretty sure "IP" stands for "Internet Protocol," but what are you gonna do?

Google: Android Market now serving 30,000 apps

At the most recent Mobile World Congress, Google CEO Eric Schmidt revealed that the company's partners are now selling over 60,000 Android handsets on a daily basis. With that kind of growth rate, it's no wonder that the size of the Android Market is quickly increasing in its slipstream. While Google doesn't publicly show how many applications there are in Android Market, a Google representative this morning informed me that the application store now serves approximately 30,000 free and paid apps in total.
