Samsung planning Android 1.6 update for Behold II — but that’s it
Posted on May 28, 2010 | No CommentsRemember the good ol' days when companies were honest to their customers? Aw, who are we kidding -- those days never actually existed, so it's good to see Samsung carrying on the time-honored tradition of playing the CYA game by belting out a bald-faced lie or two. So the Behold II for T-Mobile USA has been the subject of some serious buzz the past few days as buyers have grown weary of the lack of new builds, all while the Android world has passed them by with not one, not two, not three, but four major updates. Samsung Mobile finally broke the silence today on a forum -- good on them -- saying that there's a Donut update in the works featuring "Swype, an improved Media Player, updated core Android applications and improved Bluetooth capabilities."
That's all well and good, but Samsung goes on to say that "the Behold II is not upgradeable beyond Android 1.6" -- and we've got a serious problem with that wording. We know (and Samsung knows) damn well that they could upgrade the Behold II beyond Android 1.6, considering that the community has managed to shoehorn even Froyo onto prehistoric devices like the Dream; rather, Samsung chooses not to upgrade it beyond Android 1.6. That's a business decision that Samsung has to make, and far be it from us to try to push Sammy into continuing to sink cash into a phone that didn't sell very well -- but the least these guys could do is be honest, face the music, and tell us that's what's going on rather than insulting our collective intelligence and insisting that there's some cosmic force preventing Eclair or Froyo from loading onto a phone that was just released a few months ago. Seriously though, Sammy -- thanks for the Donut, we guess.
Update: We've now received Samsung's official response independently and have it for you after the break.Continue reading Samsung planning Android 1.6 update for Behold II -- but that's it

OLEDs are the future: Canon buries development of SEDs
Posted on May 26, 2010 | No CommentsRemember SEDs? Those surface-conduction electron-emitter displays were around for quite a while, competing with FEDs (field emission displays) until Sony decided to pull the plug on the latter back in March last year. That gave one company, Canon, enough of a push to continue to believe in SED. Canon even filed new patents on SED technology in the US in May 2009. But that's over now (we kind of anticipated this as early as December 2008).

Samsung’s AMOLED division is now profitable, expects major smartphone growth in 2010
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No CommentsIf you want the dish on what's happening with mobile displays, Lee Woo-jong, VP for marketing at Samsung Mobile Display, is as good a person to ask as any. The chap has been telling the Reuters Global Technology Summit that his company has finally gone into the black with its AMOLED production line, and that its research projects a 50 percent jump in smartphone shipments in 2010 relative to 2009. This is expected to boost demand, which is already exceeding supply, for high-quality displays. Samsung says shortages might be experienced all the way until next year, but has reiterated its belief that AMOLED is the future with a $2.15 billion investment into expanding its production lines, while also predicting a 30-fold growth in shipments of such displays by 2015. Every handset out there looking like the Wave? We could learn to live with that.Samsung's AMOLED division is now profitable, expects major smartphone growth in 2010 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 May 2010 20:03:00 EST. Rumor: Samsung Mobile to launch absolutely nothing at CES?

Samsung keeps rolling with Corby line, adds low-end Corby POP
Posted on December 25, 2009 | No Comments
Samsung's Corby handsets are already targeted toward the lower end of the market -- relatively new territory for full-touch devices -- but they're looking to aim even lower with the new Corby POP, it seems. Having recently popped up on Samsung Mobile's official India site as coming soon, it should feature a 2.8-inch display, integrated FM radio (a must in the Indian market), and a weaksauce 1.3 megapixel cam (down from the Corby's 2 megapixel unit) for an extremely reasonable 7,000 rupees (about $151) unsubsidized. We're not likely to see this one in the States, but seriously -- wouldn't this make a great prepaid phone or backup?Samsung keeps rolling with Corby line, adds low-end Corby POP originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 25 Dec 2009 14:20:00 EST. Leaked: BlackBerry Bold 9700 and Samsung Behold 2 pricing for T-Mobile
Posted on November 12, 2009 | No Comments
There you were, just this morning, sitting over your latté. "When the hell is the pricing for the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and/or Samsung Behold 2 going to leak?", you thought. Both handsets are coming within roughly a week or so, yet there was still no word on how much you needed to set aside? Pardon my french, friends, but that is shenanigans.
Fortunately, its been dealt with.

As Sesame Street is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary, now seems like as good a time as any for us to practice our counting...of mobile operating systems/platforms. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Darn, my hand ran out of fingers! Well, no matter, Samsung thinks there is plenty room for more and has taken the wraps off its own, new open mobile platform,
