Samsung Captivate is AT&T’s version of the Galaxy S, launching ‘in the coming months’
Posted on June 17, 2010 | 1 CommentSo much for the "AT&T refuses to release high-end Android devices" conspiracy theory, eh? T-Mobile had been widely pegged as Samsung's launch partner for the Galaxy S in the States, but AT&T stole its thunder this morning by announcing the Captivate featuring a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, Android 2.1, 7.2Mbps HSPA, and a 1GHz Hummingbird processor. If it sounds more or less like the European Galaxy S, well, your intuitions are spot-on -- AT&T actually describes the Captivate as "a Galaxy S smartphone." As for media, you can expect a 5 megapixel camera with 720p recording, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and 16GB of onboard storage combined with support for external storage for a total of up to 32GB; you also have 802.11n WiFi and a variety of built-in apps (some of which you'll want, others you won't) like Swype and AT&T Navigator. Unfortunately, this is a little while out yet -- AT&T is only saying that it'll launch "in the coming months" for an undisclosed price -- but we're at least stoked that AT&T's finally fully entrenched in the Android superphone game. Android 2.1 picks up steam in latest platform stats, 1.5 and 1.6 still contenders
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsWe're delighted to see that Android has built yet more momentum behind Eclair since its last platform version distribution report two weeks ago, moving the mark from 45.1 to an even 50 percent of all devices in the field (that doesn't include 2.0 or 2.0.1, which have been swiftly banished from relevance now that all 2.0 devices have received 2.1 updates). Unfortunately, Cupcake and Donut -- versions 1.5 and 1.6, respectively -- simply refuse to die, together accounting for basically all of the remaining half. That's down a little under 5 percent from the beginning of June, though, so at least we're moving in the right direction -- and a couple well-placed OTAs from HTC, Motorola, and Samsung would obliterate most of the remainder, we figure. Version fragmentation is an enemy of this platform, regardless of what Google says -- so let's just fast-track a bunch of Froyo ROMs and put all this talk behind us, alright?

Orange slips out a few Samsung Galaxy Apollo details
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsOrange's UK outpost has fessed up to the Galaxy Apollo's existence just as it started showing up on an official Samsung site, saying that the Android-powered phone -- a handset that looks a bit like the South Korean market M120S -- is "coming soon." Beyond that, we don't have much to go on, but we now know that it'll have a 3 megapixel cam with autofocus, FM radio, 3.2-inch display, and "up to 1GB external memory," which we're pretty sure is a typo or misunderstanding of some sort; in all likelihood, they mean it's got 1GB internal and it can support up to 32GB external. Or so we hope, anyhow. No word on price or a release date just yet.

Samsung Galaxy S preview

Samsung trotted out its Galaxy S handset last night in London, and we were naturally there to try and glean a better understanding of where this 4-inch Android 2.1 device fits in our wishlist hierarchy. It's quite the stat sheet stuffer, as we're sure you're aware, and it strikes an alluring figure for those looking to get on the true do-it-all smartphone bandwagon. Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 caught on video looking like a giant cellphone
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsReady to see Samsung's 7-inch Tab tablet do its thing on video? Sure you are. However, this isn't the same Galaxy Tab that we saw in the picture teased by Samsung. First of all, it has a different collection of Android-friendly "buttons" along the bottom and seems to be void of Samsung's TouchWiz UI skin. It's also carrying a P1000 model number. Well, at least the 7-inch Super AMOLED remains the same. See the quick action go by in a blur after the break.
P.S. The dialer pictured above seems to confirm that the Tab can be used like a giant phone. No, really. We've heard this previously as rumor but didn't believe it until now. T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S outed by way of FCC?
Posted on June 15, 2010 | No CommentsWe've already heard enough talk -- both from our own tipsters and other publications -- to say with some level of confidence that T-Mobile plans on unleashing the mighty Galaxy S at some point in the next month or two, but is this the smoking gun? There's now a phone called the SGH-T959 in the FCC's certification database that features AWS 3G support, and while external photos are rudely left out, the device's outline clearly mimics that of the generic, unbranded Galaxy S that we've been seeing since its unveiling back in March. At any rate, we've got this Samsung Android event coming up stateside here in a couple weeks, so we should figure it all out then.

Turning the excitement up to 11, Samsung announces *two* new WinMo 6.5 phones

I know I said yesterday that it would be hard to get excited over a WinMo 6.5 powered follow up to the Omnia, but Samsung today dropped a bombshell on us. No, not a WinPho 7 Omnia, two new WinMo 6.5 phones: the Omnia Pro 4 and 5!
Using mathemagics, scientists have proven that news of two half-interesting phones actually equals the news of one interesting phone.
But I can't say that I'm moved by Samsung's announcement.

Posted on June 15, 2010 | No CommentsAh, here we go, Samsung's other cellphone with an integrated projector just got an official launch date. The Galaxy Beam (codename: Halo) with its 3.7-inch Super AMOLED display is now slated to hit Singapore in July. That means that the European and broader launch across Asia should be just around the corner if Samsung's claims from Feburary hold true. At launch, the world's first Android phone with a built-in DLP pico projector will be served version 2.1 of Google's confectionary delight. Specwise, we're talking 7.2Mbps HSPA data on 900/1900/2100MHz and quad-band GSM/EDGE, Bluetooth 3.0, 802.11n WiFi, an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with flash (front-facing VGA) and HD video recording, A-GPS, FM Radio, and an 1,800mAH battery. Memory is confusingly listed as "4Gb + 2Gb + 1Gb + 16Gb MoviNAND" made worse by no mention of microSD though it was definitely there when we went hands-on with Beam at Mobile World Congress. Samsung’s Wave 2 and Wave 2 Pro slider join the bada OS party
Posted on June 15, 2010 | No CommentsSamsung's bada, heard of it? Samsung sure hopes so as it's betting heavily on the OS in its battle with Nokia to make cheap smartphones globally accessible. Today Samsung is introducing the Wave 2 (S5250) and Wave 2 Pro (S5330) QWERTY slider at CommunicAsia 2010. Both handsets are quad-band GPRS/EDGE (yup, no 3G) with 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1, a 3.2-inch TFT LCD, 3 megapixel camera with video recorder, A-GPS, and 80MB of memory with up to 16GB of microSD expansion. The all important user experience is handled by the TouchWiz 3.0 UI and bada's "social hub" that tightly knits together all your communications with contacts, be that over email, IM, or social networking sites. Both phones will be available in Russia and South East Asia starting in August.

Sprint’s 4G-equipped Samsung Galaxy S Pro in the wild?
Posted on June 14, 2010 | 1 CommentThe Moment just got a whole lot less interesting, didn't it? What you're looking at is allegedly Samsung's Galaxy S Pro for Sprint, a potential blockbuster of a phone that's said to have WiMAX support and a front-facing cam -- basically, the QWERTY answer to the EVO 4G (and this one's presumably got a Super AMOLED display, to boot). It doesn't look exactly like a standard Galaxy S with a keyboard grafted on, so we're not sure how confident we are that the "Galaxy S Pro" name is going to stick by the time it hits retail -- but you could call it "ball of dung" and we suspect it'd still sell like hotcakes. Stay tuned for more on this one as we get it.

Posted on June 14, 2010 | No CommentsYou'll be hard pressed to find a sane individual who'd argue that Samsung's Galaxy S isn't a lust-worthy piece of kit on the outside, and after watching the video past the break, we doubt you'll get too many takers on proving things unsightly within. Equipped with a Super AMOLED display and a bit of that Hummingbird goodness within, there weren't too many bits and pieces to tear apart. What was found, however, leaves a new appreciation for steady hands. Go on, give it a look-see -- the real deal will be out and about before you know it.

Samsung’s Galaxy Apollo smartphone is coming soon, looks like an M100S to us
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No CommentsIn the off chance that the Galaxy S isn't your cup of tea, the second-hottest Android device Samsung has released so far is undoubtedly the M100S over in its domestic Korean market, a 3.7-inch hottie with a 5 megapixel cam, 802.11n WiFi, and Android 2.1. It's not just for South Korea, though, as evidenced by this shot that's popped up over on Samsung's British site showing a device known as the "Galaxy Apollo" that looks suspiciously identical to the M100S. Frankly, we're still dying to get a glimpse of this Bluetooth 3.0-equipped M120S at some point -- but in the meantime, we suppose this puppy will have to do. No word on a release date, but Sammy's site claims that it's "coming soon."
