Stargate Universe premeres tonight, set your TiVos

I’ve heard good things about Stargate Universe so far, but I’m still nervous about tonight’s premiere. SG-1 and Atlantis are two of my favorite shows of all time and I’m afraid that this new series is something different than those two. From what I’ve seen, it’s taking a very Battlestar Galactica-look, which might not be [...]

Video: Panasonic commercial shows new “Avatar” footage (kind of)

The official trailer for Avatar, James Cameron's new (and supposedly groundbreaking) Sci-Fi movie, came out just last month, and now Panasonic is showing a TV spot promoting their Viera TVs and the movie on Japanese television. The commercial, which is currently in heavy rotation on TV over here, shows some very brief new scenes from Avatar (which is due out in both the US and Japan on December 18).

These are the worst sci-fi costumes ever

You better act fast if you don't have a Halloween costume. I'm still debating mine: it's between being an Apple fanboy (dress up as an apple (with green trousers and shoes to keep it real), then wear a fan as a hat) or a death panel board member, which will play well in super liberal Manhattan. (Health care joke! Tip your waitress.) What you don't want to do, however, is dress up like any of these guys.

He who controls the Spice, controls the LEGO universe

lego sandwormPaul Atreides, House Harkonnen, Bene Gesserit, Sandworms -- what's not to love about Frank Herbert's Dune? And what better way to immerse yourself in that world than by recreating things in LEGO bricks! If LEGO were to create a packaged set for Dune, the way they have for Star Wars and Indiana Jones, I would certainly buy a couple, and feel no remorse whatsoever playing with them, alone, in my basement. Alas, no such sets have been made, so enterprising fans of less-mainstream sci-fi and fantasy franchises are left to their own devices to create their favorite things from whatever collection of colored plastic bricks they can assemble.

The first Avatar trailer is here (update: American version)

James Cameron's highly anticipated Sci-Fi movie Avatar (to be released on December 18) has been getting a lot of hype in the last few months, and now Fox gives us the trailer for the movie. But judging from this 2-minute teaser trailer, Avatar will look pretty cartoony/video game-ish (this is my impression at least).

District 9 loved on IMDb, ranked 8.9 out of 10

As just discussed in the CrunchGear chatroom, I don't know anything about District 9 because I'm eventually going to see it. All I need to know is that right now the movie is ranked number 26 on IMDB's top 250 list and has an 8.9 out of 10 rating. If the movie keeps the 8.9 rating after more votes are submitted, it will surpass The Dark Knight (8.8), Star Wars (8.8), The Empire Strikes Back (8.8), and LOTR: Return of the King (8.8) as the top Sci-fi movie of all time. Not that I'm going to read these comments because they will certainly contain spoilers, but is the movie really that good? Like better than The Dark Knight good?

Touchable Holography: New projector lets you “touch” 3D objects with your hands (video)

Here's some more info on a Sci-Fi dream come true: As if looking at floating images in free space produced by mid-air displays isn't cool enough, a research team from the University of Tokyo now makes it possible to even touch (kind of) those images with a newly developed projector system. The so-called Touch Holography is essentially made of three parts: Provision Interactive Technologies' Holo display, two Wii remote controls to track your hands in front of the display and a tactile display that uses ultrasound to provide tactile sensation onto your hand.

Disney reveals plot and title for new Tron movie

A sequel for cult movie Tron was rumored to be in preparation for years now, and today Walt Disney Pictures has finally revealed a few tidbits of information about the reboot of the "virtual reality film". It will simply be called Tron (and not Tron 2, Tron 2.0 or "Tr2n") and we'll be able to see some footage very soon. Disney said they will show a 3D clip from the movie during the Comic-Con in San Diego on July 23. The poster is from the first movie, which was made back in 1982 (and has aged pretty well).

  • TV Everywhere is Comcast and Time Warner’s answer to free Internet video

TV Everywhere is Comcast and Time Warner’s answer to free Internet video

Cable providers Comcast and Time Warner might be late to the Internet video party, but that doesn't mean they are going to let us enjoy content for free that they pay for. Oh no, the TV Everywhere Model is designed to give Comcast and Time Warner paying subscribers access to content and block-out everyone else. And this system might find its way into Hulu. You can't blame the cable operators for their plans. They have to pay good money for access to cable stations. Then they, of course, pass along the cost to subs via a monthly bill. The thought is that those people that pay for the content should be able to watch all of it on both their TVs and computers. Of course the other side is that if you don't pay for those services, then you'll be shut out. This authentication system will be used initially on sites like Comcast's video site, Fancast, but there is always the possibility that it could eventually make its way on to Hulu.
