iPhone 4 and iPhone 3G screens go head-to-head under the microscope

We got up pretty close to the iPhone 4's retina display in our review, but we can't say we got quite as close as PhD candidates Ryan White and Bryan Gauntt of Penn State University, who have kindly provided us with some images of the screen under a microscope (along with an iPhone 3G for comparison). According to their measurements, the iPhone 3G's pixels measure 13 x 40 microns, while the iPhone 4's measure 6.5 x 20 microns, which adds up to exactly four times as many pixels. iTunes 9.2 is out, ready to hook up with your iPhone 4
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsIt looks like iTunes 9.2 has just hit the Software Update screens of computers across the land, and if you've got an iPhone 4 on order, this is one you'll want to get around to installing in the next few days -- it's the only way you'll be able to sync (actually, you'll want it if you're using iOS 4 on any manner of iPhone). Major features include iBooks support on the iPhone and iPod touch, PDF syncing through iBooks, home screen folder organization, and "faster backups" with iOS 4-equipped devices -- a promising sign for anyone troubled by long sync times. HTC EVO suffering from glass separation issues?
Posted on June 13, 2010 | No Commentsdigg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/HTC_Evo_suffering_from_glass_separation_issues_Engadget'; Potential bad news for EVO owners: we're seeing plenty of reports from folks having issues with the lower portions of their screens. Conspiracy theories say that the adhesive holding the glass is failing, causing the screen to peel up a bit and embark on a very slow journey to capacitive independence. This separation is causing excessive light leakage from below, a problem that we noted in our review but apparently gets continually worse as users spend more time massaging their screens -- even those not being as hard on theirs as this guy was. No official response from HTC yet and we're not sure just what a fix could be, but we have seen people do some wonderful things with duct tape.

Samsung: iPhone 4’s retina display is nice, but it’s no AMOLED
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No CommentsSamsung seems to have taken exception to a little sidenote made by Steve Jobs during his iPhone 4 announcement at WWDC10 this Monday. While waxing poetic on the virtues of IPS, Jobs let us know that he considers it an entirely superior display technology to OLED, and now the world's biggest display maker has a few words to say about it. According to a Samsung spokesperson, the high-res retina display on the iPhone 4 offers only a 3 to 5 percent advantage in sharpness over its own Galaxy S Super AMOLED screen, but sucks down a wasteful 30 percent more power. Moreover, Samsung believes its screens offer better viewing angles and contrast, and concludes by saying that "structurally, IPS LCD technology cannot catch up with AM-OLED display technology." And here we thought Samsung and Apple were getting along so well.

Panasonic starts taking orders for its 152-inch, 4K plasma 3D TV
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No CommentsJust yesterday, we reported about Panasonic's plan to start selling two 3D plasma TVs (a 42- and a 46-inch model) on the Japanese market next month. And today, the same company announced [press release in English] it will start accepting orders for another batch of three new 3D plasma TVs on July 1. Targeted at "professional users", these TVs are bigger. Much bigger.

Posted on June 7, 2010 | No CommentsSure, you've seen our iPhone 4 hands-on... but have you seen it through a retina display? We put the new device next to our trusty old iPhone 3G to get a feel just how different the screens look with twice the pixel density and shot a little pseudo-macro video. There's a marked difference in the screens, even side-by-side with the EVO 4G, and we found that even from a distance we were able to read bodies of text we'd previously had to squint to discern on our classic iPhones. Hard to capture, it really is something you have to see first-hand... but until you get that chance, live vicariously through us after the break.

Innoversal Lattice Tablet gets its Pixel Qi touched

Do you like your screens crisp, but your phones a little less wavey? Do you like teh Gigahertzes, but are fearful of dragons?
Well, I'm happy that you're so sure of yourself, but I'm even happier that the Galaxy S ticks all of your boxes AND will be released sometime in June!
But calm down a sec, mmmkay? There is something more I need to tell you. First of all, the June release is for Asia only at this point.

HP developing “next-gen” wristwatch for the military

Printed circuitry on plastic isn't very new, but what is interesting is that HP is commoditizing it and creating wristwatches using display elements and chips etched right onto a roll of soft plastic. The printed faces can also contain solar cells to power the watch.
HP Labs has been developing a process to "print" the plastic display components for 10 years. The company originally intended to use the technology in portable memory drives, but creating larger screens out of plastic turned out to be a more economical and feasible venture, Taussig said.

iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4 includes AT&T tethering option
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No CommentsSee that screen there? That's from the minty fresh beta 4 of iPhone OS 4.0, which was just released to developers moments ago. Unless our eyes are badly mistaken, that's an option to setup internet tethering on AT&T, something that WWAN warriors have been waiting for since... oh, forever. We're downloading the new build as we speak, and we'll let you know if we find anything out. Oh, and don't get your hopes up too high -- AT&T proclaimed that it was "still waiting on better network performance" before enabling iPhone tethering just three weeks ago.
Update: There's a video of the screens after the break, just in case your belief was temporarily suspended for any reason. Thanks, Jerish!
Update 2: Well, this is interesting -- we just updated an iPhone 3GS in Chicago, and we're not seeing the tethering option. We're guessing this is a glitch or just a mismatched carrier setting file, since so many others are seeing it, but we'll do some digging and see what's up.

Workers sue iPhone maker Wintek over n-hexane poisoning

But this is 2010, which means you spend fifty bucks, slap a little black box to the bottom of your iPhone, and call it good. MU Interactive Table: You know, for kids

So this thing, called MU, is a "multi-media installation" that shows kids some kind of music and fairy tale thing that teaches them "hearing, musical, and creation." Now kids need computers. Amen. But what they don't need is computers teaching them "hearing, musical, and creation." They "hear" every day, they can play music with a bucket and a stick, and they can create with crayons. They don't need computers.
