  • iPhone app review: GoodReader

    iPhone app review: GoodReader

One of the things I've always wanted to do with my smartphone -- whether it was my original Palm Treo 650, or my current iPhone -- was to read books while on-the-go. Unfortunately, the screens on these smartphones have all been way too small to make reading comfortable for anything more than a screenful or two. Even reading long email messages can be a strain on my eyes. It doesn't help that many e-books are formatted for a full screen, so they require vertical and horizontal scrolling to read. Thankfully, GoodReader exists, and only costs a buck.

    QR-LPD: Bridgestone’s flexible e-paper (video)

Even though it's not an electronics company, Bridgestone (the tire maker) is one of a handful Japanese firms that has been experimenting with e-paper in recent years. Last October, Bridgestone claimed the bragging rights for the world's first flexible e-book reader. And a few days ago, the company showcased the newest version of their e-paper, now named QR-LPD (Quick Response Liquid Power Display), during an industry expo in Tokyo.

  • Palm plays on their new-found ability to make good ads with two new ones

Palm plays on their new-found ability to make good ads with two new ones

Semi-transparent smartphone screens floating in front of the user Minority Report style are all the rage right now. Palm started it back in May with their first "Life moves fast. Dont Miss A Thing." commercial. Microsoft had the unfortunate timing of launching a strikingly similar ad just 3 days later -- and then RIM showed up with their crazy impromptu dance club remix of the idea just yesterday. Oh well. Copy-cats aside, Palm's carrying on with the idea. Showing off their new found abilities to make ads that don't creep us out or otherwise turn us away, they've just released two more TV spots. (Heads up: Instead of cute lady people, these ones feature hipster dudes, one of whom seems to be trying to dress like Neo.) Check'em out after the jump.

TomTom Go Live 1000 blurs the line between PND and connected tablet

The dedicated GPS market is slowly but steadily shrinking as smartphones gain the same abilities, but yet the major players keep rolling out new devices. The TomTom Go Live 1000 bucks the trend of a semi-smart connected device and instead adds a ton of storage on top of a powerful setup to run a WebKit-based UI along with a ton of connected apps. This just might be the PND we've been waiting for -- too bad it's a few years late.

  • Why 960×640 Makes Sense For the iPhone HD

Why 960×640 Makes Sense For the iPhone HD

We alluded yesterday that the higher resolution screen on the Phantom iPhone of Redwood City would more-than-likely have double the horizontal and vertical pixels of the current iPhone screen (therefore quadrupling the pixel count), and now the ever-reliable John Gruber has weighed in on the likelihood of a new-and-improved double-PPI resolution. The main take-away here is that while the current iPhone screen is gorgeous, Apple are trying to make the screen on the next iPhone look as clear as the print found in expensive glossy magazines.

Panasonic goes live with the DMC-G2 & DMC-G10 pricing

We already knew everything about the DMC-G1 and DMC-G10. Panasonic announced them back in early March and revealed their 12.1 MP sensors, 3-inch LCD screens, and 720p video modes. But the press release back then didn't mention anything about pricing. Don't you hate that? We do.

Next-gen iPad said to have OLED screen (deja vu, anyone?)

The Apple rumor mill is back up and running its dirty tricks again. This time we hear that the iPad is supposed to get an OLED screen just like we heard in the past MacBook Pros and iPhpnes were going to get the better screens. So being burned at least twice before, we're a little hesitant to take this report seriously.

For the Nintendo 3DS? Sharp’s unveils glasses-free 3D touchscreen [Update: Video]

Glasses-free 3D displays for mobile devices are nothing new. Hitachi, for example, started selling a 3D-enabled handset [JP] in Japan as early as last year. The Hitachi product didn't make much of a splash, but Sharp's new parallax barrier-based 3D display for mobile devices (which the company announced today) appears to be pretty cool.

Video demo: IE9 with NVIDIA Ion hardware acceleration

We'll soon live in an age when netbooks have both CPUs and GPUs and it will be grand. Unicorns and rainbows will dance off of our screens in harmony -- and Internet Explorer might become relevant again. The video after the jump shows what IE9 is capable of when a next-generation Nvidia Ion GPU is paired with an Intel Atom CPU verses a standard netbook with an Atom all by itself. The differences are obvious and makes a solid case for Internet Explorer. But most of us will probably visit the International Space Station before setting IE as our default browser even if it renders graphics faster.
