If you have an original Storm purchased through Verizon then first, our condolences. At the risk of rubbing it in (since you're still on contract) we have to tell you that the second generation Storm2 -- the full-screen BlackBerry you should have waited for -- just got an official $179.99 (after $100 mail-in rebate and 2-year contract) October 28th release date as expected. Storm owners can, however, take solace in the BlackBerry OS 5.0 update now available for download that boasts several improvements including those keyboard and general usability enhancements we already knew were coming.

Hyper-Active-GO-GO-GO Quick Look: Kingston MobileLite G2

Kingston just released a second generation of their super-compact memory card reader line. Being that there isn't all that much to say about it, I decided to give it a quick run-through on video. Let me know if you dig it - I love doing video stuff, but just don't know whether or not people enjoy it. Also: Don't do drugs, kids.

Verizon’s CEO has been rocking the Storm 2 for weeks, demoing it to employees

The BlackBerry Storm 2 is no secret. We've known that a second generation touchscreen BlackBerry has been in the works for months. Actually it was probably RIM that "leaked" all the info in an effort to save face from the flop that is the original Storm. A NYT article quotes Verizon's CEO saying that he's been carrying the phone for weeks and been giving impromptu demos at Verizon Wireless retail outlets. Spoiler: employees like it.

  • Why Desktop Touch Screens Don’t Really Work Well For Humans

Why Desktop Touch Screens Don’t Really Work Well For Humans

Hewlett Packard refreshed their TouchSmart line of computers today. If you’re not familiar with these, imagine an iMac all in one computer that has a touch screen, and you’re most of the way there. I really like the TouchSmart line, and use a second generation machine as my main Windows test computer. The touch interface is done via infrared, which is a very cost effective way of creating a touch interface on a large screen. Microsoft, in fact, uses it in their experimental TouchWall product that can make a touch screen of virtually any size wall (more TouchWall footage). Overall I give the TouchScmart top marks – the only drawback is that it is inexplicably heavy at something like 60 lbs., and no one seems to know why. But since it sits on your desk, it’s not like you’re lifting it very often, so it doesn’t really matter. But the machine is still all wrong. Anyone who has used one for a long time will tell you that they quickly revert to using the keyboard and mouse. And it isn’t because of the software or touch technology – both are fine.

HTC Magic to officially get Sense UI

Good news for you, HTC Magic owner. Over the weekend at an event held in Taipei, HTC announced that the second generation Android device would be getting a UI overhaul ala Hero. Pretty rad, right? It is if you live outside the US because the T-Mobile myTouch 3G with Google ain’t getting it. Don’t act surprised. It’s been made clear in the past that anything branded “with Google” cannot be altered because of licensing issues. And don’t think that your Vodafone Magic is getting it either because both the UK and US Magics have 96MB less RAM than all the other Magics in the world. That’s a big pile of suck. So, yeah, those of you in Taiwan who have a Chunghwa Magic will be the only ones to benefit from the update.

  • Verizon Wireless to carry Palm Pre, Storm 2 “in about six months”

Verizon Wireless to carry Palm Pre, Storm 2 “in about six months”

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/hardware/Verizon_to_get_Palm_Pre_Storm_2_in_about_six_months'; Think you'll have to wait until June 6th for all the Pre surprises to emerge? Think again. A breaking Reuters report has just dropped one of the biggest cellular bombshells of the year: Verizon Wireless, America's largest mobile operator, will soon be carrying Palm's Pre. Oh, that's not enough? No worries -- it'll also be selling a "new version of the touchscreen BlackBerry Storm," which is obviously the Storm 2 that we've been toying around with. The report makes clear that both phones would be cleared for shipment in around six months, which certainly jibes with whispers we've heard about Sprint's mighty short exclusivity period. The news came from the company's Lowell McAdam, the top executive for the venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone. To quote: "Over the next six months or so you will see devices like Palm Pre and a second generation Storm." First Sprint, then AT&T, and now Verizon? T-Mobile, where you at?

    [Thanks, E]

Update: Seems Mr. McAdam continued on by noting that VZW would get the Palm Pre "and a cousin." Hmm, Eos, anyone?
