  • IDC Forecasts 19.8% Growth For PC Market, Slower Netbook Sales In 2010

IDC Forecasts 19.8% Growth For PC Market, Slower Netbook Sales In 2010

IDC reports impressive year-over-year growth for global PC shipments of 27.1% in the first quarter of 2010, which has prompted the company to revise its projection for the entire year. In light of slow but certain economic recovery, IDC now foresees 19.8% growth in 2010, according to its Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. Unlike most of 2009, netbooks are no longer driving the volume as much as in recent times. IDC says the recent market recovery has notably seen a small rebound in higher priced computers, including e-readers and tablets. Although low to mid-range portable PCs continue to dominate the market, desktop computers also recovered with its first yearly growth since the second quarter of 2008.

  • In2Pay is the name of Visa and DeviceFidelity’s money-grubbing iPhone case

In2Pay is the name of Visa and DeviceFidelity’s money-grubbing iPhone case

Visa has been trying to finagle its way onto mobiles for quite a while, and its latest attempt, done in partnership with DeviceFidelity, has now been named as the In2Pay system for iPhones of 3G and 3GS varieties. Built around an app ensconced on a MicroSD card inside that oh-so-special iPhone case, this offers contactless payments anywhere that Visa's payWave is available, as well as secure access to buildings and computer networks. Yep, that sounds like it's definitely going to end in tears, but the brave cash collectors are pressing ahead. Trials are still set for the second quarter of this year, which makes them imminent, and soon thereafter we'll all be making our ill-advised purchases with even greater ease. Video and full PR after the break.

  • Verizon’s HTC Droid Eris getting Android 2.1 any time now

Verizon’s HTC Droid Eris getting Android 2.1 any time now

We'd been hearing rumors lately that HTC's Droid Eris -- a phone that has never quite made it out from under the Droid's shadow -- is in the midst of being discontinued by Verizon, but the imminent launch of an Android 2.1 update might just buy it a new lease on life. In fact, the update makes this phone just about the first Hero variant anywhere in the world to be graced with an upgrade to Google's latest and greatest stuff, beating Sprint's version thanks to a string of delays that have pushed it out to some unidentified period in the second quarter. We've yet to see any reports of folks actually receiving the update notification on their devices, but Verizon's official support Twitter account is tweeting about the upgrade -- which should fix numerous bugs on top of the hotly-anticipated Eclair boost -- so we'd expect it to start hitting the wild shortly. Keep us on top of your experiences in comments, won't you?

    [Thanks, Richard]

Update: Verizon has now posted the PDF changelog for your perusal while you wait. Thanks, Michael V.!

Sprint: Android 2.1 for Hero and Moment “to be available in Q2″ (Read: Not Today.)

Hurray! The Sprint Hero is getting Android 2.1 on May 7th! Wait, no it’s not! Sprint has never named a specific date on which their Hero and Moment handsets would be getting Android 2.1, beyond a tweet promising them sometime in the second quarter. A few signs were pointing to a launch today — but [...]

The Shuttle barebone XS35 HD is as thick as my granola bar is wide

Don't be fooled by the size of this Shuttle computer. It has everything that you would fine in a larger rig but is barely larger than a convential 3.5-inch hard drive at 33mm wide. But you probably knew that. After all, it is 2010 and small form factor computers are nothing new.

If you own a HTC Hero or Samsung Moment, don’t get too jealous at DROID and Nexus One owners just yet. Xperia X10 to launch in April on Vodafone UK (Update: And others!)

If you’d captured all the drool we’ve drooled over the X10 since it first got detailed so many months ago, you’d have a pool deep enough to swim in. A very nasty pool that you shouldn’t actually swim in, but a pool nonetheless. Today, UK wireless carrier Vodafone has announced that they’ll soon be carrying the [...]

D-Link now has thingamajigs that will remotely monitor your house for security breaches. Amazing.

And now D-Link is in the home security business. The company, of whose router I bought several months ago and fight to use on a daily basis (seriously, the Internet just cuts out at times... what are you gonna do?), has just announced a series of home monitoring devices, including the Home Monitoring Starter Kit ($149). One device plugs into your router, and then you place a series of wireless motion sensors around the house in strategic areas (doors, windows, etc.). The sensors then send alert the device, which can then text message you, send you an e-mail, etc. something like, “Hey, the kids are home.”

  • Palm loses $85.4 million in latest reported quarter — hey, it’s an improvement

Palm loses $85.4 million in latest reported quarter — hey, it’s an improvement

We don't know just how quickly Palm (or Elevation Partners, for that matter) thought it'd become profitable following the release of webOS, but it's not there quite yet -- the company is in the process of outing its earnings for the second quarter of fiscal year 2010 right now, and in a word, they're still in the red. The good news is that it's a marked improvement from last quarter -- they've gone from a $164.5M GAAP net loss to an $85.4M one this time around. On a non-GAAP gross basis, they actually made $5.5M, which is up from $2.8M a quarter earlier. They've got $590 million in cash and other "short-term investments" on the book right now, which seems like it should be enough to keep the company going without a profit or additional cash infusion for at least a few additional quarters, but then again, burn rate is going to vary with just how much hardware and software R&D they're doing and the kinds of carrier deals they're scoring. We bet they're looking forward to this Verizon business going down, eh?

Update: Palm's specifically saying that they're looking to grow carrier and geographic coverage right now -- a good plan, if we say so ourselves.

Update 2: They've sold 784,000 phones in the quarter, which compares to 823,000 in the last -- a 5 percent drop. That's up 41 percent from the same quarter a year ago... but yeah, of course it's going to be way up from the pre-webOS days.

Update 3: Over 800 apps in the catalog so far, once they graduate from the Early Access Program exclusivity, Palm foresees a "flood" of apps. No plans right now to change SDK strategy to a more native development environment.

Sony Ericsson Elm, Hazel, and VH700 stereo Bluetooth buds beef up vegan GreenHeart line

Who says tree-hugging has to be boring? Actually, Sony Ericsson's latest sets to join the eco-friendly GreenHeart line aren't anything special, but at least they don't slouch in the specs department -- both the Hazel slider and Elm candybar announced today feature 5 megapixel cams, GPS with geotagging, LED flashes, and dual-band HSPA on top of quadband EDGE. The real news, though, might be the introduction of SE's very first GreenHeart accessory -- the VH700 stereo Bluetooth headset -- which ponies up dual mics for improved call quality and micro-USB recharging. It'll hit in the first quarter of the year along with the Elm; the Hazel follows on in the second quarter.

  • Nokia 2710 Navigation Edition navigates, stays cheap

Nokia 2710 Navigation Edition navigates, stays cheap

Unless you're talking about a carrier-branded solution like VZ Navigator, turn-by-turn nav is still a pretty rare offering on featurephones -- let alone low-end ones -- which makes Nokia's new 2710 Navigation Edition an interesting announcement. Billed as Espoo's "most affordable navigation device ever," the simple candybar features a digital compass, 2.2-inch display, 2 megapixel cam, FM radio, and the all-important 3.5mm headphone jack for those times when you're not blaring voice guidance over the loudspeaker. The company says we can expect to see this one launch both in developing and developed markets, one of the first times we've seen a nav-centric device cross over like that -- and at €110 ($163) unsubsidized, we can see the appeal. Look for it to ship in the second quarter of next year. Follow the break for Nokia's promo video.

LG to announce Snapdragon-boasting Android phone, Korea-bound in 2010

It's looking like LG will be offering an Android phone boasting Qualcomm's hot Snapdragon chip -- which has recently squeezed its way into handsets such as the Xperia X10 and Acer's Liquid. The new LG mobile phone is expected for the Korean market in the second quarter of 2010. While the device is still unnamed and specs are still a mystery, LG is promising that the device will be "more mature" than the GW620 Eve, an Android device announced earlier this week for Rogers in Canada. There's no solid word on what availability of the device will be like, though LG says its considering possibilities outside of Korea.
