Remote monitoring systems for the elderly are nothing new, but Japanese conglomerate Marubeni's technology seems to be particularly advanced. And unlike you might think, it's not based on robotics, but on a sensor system. It enables families and medical institutions to remotely check the health of older people around the clock - as long as the person in question keeps wearing a small sensor on the chest.

And it was clear that the first robot maker marketing a new line of robots as "recyclable" would come out of the same country, too. Nokia asks ITC to ban iPhone, iPod, and MacBook imports, files another lawsuit against Apple
Posted on January 4, 2010 | No Commentsdigg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/Nokia_Wants_to_Ban_iPhone_iPod_and_MacBook_Imports'; Looks like Nokia is going all-out in its patent fight with Apple: in addition to the lawsuit it's filed over GSM standards and last week's International Trade Commission complaint, Espoo just filed a second complaint with the federal court, alleging that Apple's infringing several "implementation patents" that cover everything from camera sensors to touchscreens. That's three fronts in the same war, if you're counting -- the original regarding GSM patents, and these two latest over specific device technologies. The biggest bombshell so far is the ITC complaint, in which Nokia's asking the commission to ban imports of basically every Apple mobile product from the MacBook to the iPhone for infringing its device patents -- a strategy we've seen in other high-profile cases. Since the ITC has the ability to move quite quickly, we'd expect that case to be the primary battleground for the moment -- but remember that Apple has plenty of its own incredibly broad patents of its own to fight back with here, so don't expect a quick resolution. Looks like 2010 is going to be awfully good for these attorneys, don't you think?

Mad Hurricane: Japan’s new mini assault robot destroys stuff (video)

Japan's robot otaku can soon lay their hands on yet another of those electro-mechanical marvels, but this time the robot isn't cute. No, this new model, made by Tokyo-based robot venture Poseidon, is supposed to be mean for a change. And its name (Mad Hurricane) is pretty bad ass, too.
Mad Hurricane can perform a number of motions: walk in four directions, swirl to the right or left, stand up by himself when he's on his back or face and, most importantly, kick and punch in six variations. Powered by a battery, the robot stands 40cm tall and weighs 2.4kg. It's made of aluminum, has six built-in gyro sensors and a total of 20 joints.

Autonomous office cleaning robot

Japanese conglomerates Fuji Heavy Industries, Sumitomo and Subaru are developing a new robot [JP, PDF] that's able to clean office buildings autonomously. The yet to be named robot (pictured on the left) is sized at just 50x45x80cm, meaning it's able to maneuver even along narrow paths. Its functions include vacuuming the floors and picking up garbage.

Oregon Scientific goes green with solar powered weather stations

What we have here is somewhat self-explanatory. The two new Oregon Scientific weather stations provide clock functions along with weather info and are solar powered. Both models feature atomic clocks and a detachable solar panel that recharges the battery. This way, you can know what the weather will be like for your daily tree hugging.

Robots taking over role of backseat driver

This is a prototype robot that utilizes sensors inside and outside the car to create "a platform comprising of a personal robot and an intelligent navigation system that aims to bring an innovative driving experience." I don't own an automobile, so practically every driving experience is innovative to me right now! Rather than traditional destination-oriented GPS navigation, AIDA posits "a navigation system that mimics the friendly expertise of a driving companion who is familiar with both the driver and the city." Hopefully AIDA won't complain about my driving the way all my friends do. Video and more inside!

Japan has produced many humanoids in the past years, but making them move in one way or the other is usually a challenge. Kyoto-based Robo Garage has unveiled Ropid [JP] today, a mini robot that runs on two legs and can jump as high as 8cm.

No pictures for this yet, but after conquering nursing homes, schools and hospitals, Japan's robots are finally ready to get into office spaces, too. Fujitsu's new and yet to be named gofer robot is an all-round talent, designed to be used mainly during office hours. It can move among the staff and actually gets work done as well.

Video: Rescue robot can pull victims into its body

I experienced two scary earthquakes in the last days in Tokyo, so hearing that the local fire department isn't sleeping on the rescue robot front was a relief. The newest model [JP] can be used for those cases in which the rescuers can't reach people in an emergency, i.e. if the area is too dangerous for the rescuers themselves.
The so-called Robocue can be remote-controlled and is able to pull victims inside its body via a conveyor belt. After that, the person in question can be driven to a safe area.
