  • South Korea first to terrestrially broadcast HD 3DTV

South Korea first to terrestrially broadcast HD 3DTV

Conclusive evidence that South Korea is the greatest country on Earth: it will begin terrestrial (that's over-the-air) 3D TV broadcasts in a few weeks. Better still, it'll be in full high-definition. How long do you think it's going to be before "Dancing With The Stars" is shown in 3D here? Probably like 200 years, yes.

  • Motoroi: Motorola to release another Android phone in March (video)

Motoroi: Motorola to release another Android phone in March (video)

Motorola held a press conference in Seoul yesterday to announce a partnership with SK Telecom, a major Korean telecommunications company. The occasion: SK Telecom will be the first company to distribute an Android phone in that country, the so-called Motorola Motoroi. It's not a rebranded Droid, but a completely new phone (in Europe, the Droid was named "Milestone" but remained largely unchanged technically). SK Telecom customers will be able to lay their hands on the Motoroi in early February. But Motorola Korea and SK Telekom representatives are quoted as saying that Motorola is ready to roll out the Motoroi in the US in March, too. And apparently it will be available in a number of other countries as well.

  • Secret copyright treaty is the most annoying thing you’ll read all year

Secret copyright treaty is the most annoying thing you’ll read all year

A great African American civil rights activist one said, “I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired.” That's how I feel about copyright these days. You've got these entrenched business interests who seemingly have their favorite congressmen on speed-dial, and then you have people who, God forbid, would like to see these businesses embrace new, practical business models that don't automatically assume their customers are potential criminals. But this! This latest development has me thinking, “You know what? Just shoot me. Go ahead, I'll even buy the ammo from Wal-Mart if you want. I don't have to pay my student loans any more (take that, Citibank!), and I won't have to worry about being treated like a criminal by the likes of whatever stupid entertainment company is in Congress' good graces this week. Win-win.”

  • Samsung, KT hooking up for new WiBro-enabled phone

Samsung, KT hooking up for new WiBro-enabled phone

If this picture looks a little "off," yeah, we know what you're talking about -- it's hard to say how any graphic designer could've mis-rendered a mocked-up screenshot this badly -- but just squint your eyes a little bit and play along, won't you? This is apparently a conceptual view of Samsung's new SPH-M8400 for South Korea's KT, which will become just the manufacturer's second phone to feature WiBro (and KT's first) after the M830 / M8300. In fact, they've coined a fun little term for it -- 3W -- which means you're getting WiBro, WiFi, and WCDMA all wrapped up in one for the total 3G / 4G experience. Neither a date nor pricing are easy to come by at this point, but unless you happen to be around Seoul, that WiBro compatibility isn't going to do you a heck of a lot of good anyhow.

South Korea issues exemption, gets iPhone in return

In the same way that the FCC acts as the Black Gate of Mordor for US-bound mobile devices, the South Koreans have their own Hobbit-deterrent regulatory body to oversee mobile communications and devices, the KCC. As luck would have it, the orcs kind folks working at the KCC have had a change of heart regarding [...]

  • World ranking: New Yorkers pay lowest cell phone charges

World ranking: New Yorkers pay lowest cell phone charges

I'm aware studies comparing cell phone charges generally have to be taken with a grain of salt (especially cross-country studies like the following one), but this one coming from the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is pretty interesting. It's not really a "world" ranking, but the ministry compared [JP, PDF] cell phone charges in seven major cities in Europe, Asia and the US. The result in a nutshell: New Yorkers are pretty lucky, Parisians aren't.
