AT&T seals deal on Verizon’s divested Alltel markets
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No CommentsIt took a good, long while, but AT&T has finally closed on its acquisition of the markets Verizon was required to divest in order to get the government to agree to its purchase of Alltel early last year. For most customers, the move has no practical impact -- the markets are mostly rural -- but for affected folks, it means that they'll be able to "select a device comparable to their existing device at no additional cost" as markets get upgraded over the course of the next 12 months. Interestingly, all of the markets will be getting the 3G treatment, a sharp departure from AT&T's typical strategy of keeping unpopulated areas on EDGE -- but it probably makes sense to get them up and running on 3G since the network's got to be built up from scratch anyhow. Follow the break for the full press release.Continue reading AT&T seals deal on Verizon's divested Alltel markets

Ceramic seed grenade calls chia pet a wuss

My wife loves to grow flowers. It's difficult here in Nevada, and I'm usually a little less then supportive of her projects (I get really tired of trays of plants strewn throughout the house in the early spring). Here however, is a seed distribution device I can get behind.

Sharp unveils world’s first 3D HD camera module for mobile devices
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No CommentsSharp really believes in 3D, it seems. And today Sharp in Japan unveiled [press release in English] the world's first 3D camera module that can be used in mobile devices such as cell phones, cameras or portable gaming systems.

Sharp busts out world’s first 3D HD camera for mobile devices
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No CommentsOh yeah, things just got real. Sharp has announced an industry first today, with its 720p-recordin' 3D camera module. Intended for mobile devices like smartphones and point-and-shoot digicams, this miniature wonder will be sampling in July and hitting mass production before the end of the year. Not much else is known about it at this point -- we can guess it'll cost a pretty penny when it debuts -- but Sharp has penned an effusive press release, which you may explore just past the break.Continue reading Sharp busts out world's first 3D HD camera for mobile devices

There's just one Android phone currently available in Japan, one of the biggest mobile markets in the world. Sharp to bring solar-powered cell phone to China (and possibly elsewhere, too)
Posted on January 27, 2010 | No Comments
Sharp, the biggest (in terms of market share) of all eight major Japanese cell phone makers, has been talking about internationalizing its phone business for quite some time now. It makes sense, as the domestic market is shrinking and as Sharp only sold 20% of all their cell phones outside Japan (1.6 million units) last fiscal.

Sharp develops efficient solar cells for use in outer space
Posted on December 23, 2009 | No Comments
Earlier this year, we reported twice about Japan's serious plans to go to outer space to generate solar energy and then beam it back to Mother Earth. And today, Sharp has shown the first solar cell that's not only bendable (we've seen that before) but that also withstands conditions in space. In addition, the company says those cells boast a record-high solar efficiency of 36%.
