Gyroscope gunning on the iPhone 4 with Eliminate: Gun Range (video)

We'd heard earlier that ngmoco's new game Eliminate: Gun Range was one of the first apps to really take advantage of the iPhone 4's gyroscope, and now that we've had a chance to play with it, we've got say there's a ton of potential here. E:GR is itself just a simple shooter, but the gyroscope adds what seems like nearly 1:1 motion control to the proceedings -- and since you're moving the display itself, it almost feels like augmented reality. It's hard to explain, since it's so unlike any mobile UI experience we've encountered before, but as soon as we tried it our brains pretty much exploded with possibilities -- we're thinking drastic improvements to actual augmented reality apps like Layar, all kinds of crazy flight simulator games, much more refined GPS apps, you name it. Video after the break.

    iPhone 4 review

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/The_first_iPhone_4_review'; The iPhone 4 is no small thing to review. As most readers of Engadget are well aware, in the gadget world a new piece of Apple hardware is a major event, preceded by rumors, speculation, an over-the-top announcement, and finally days, weeks, or months of anticipation from an ever-widening fan base. The iPhone 4 is certainly no exception -- in fact, it may be Apple's most successful launch yet, despite some bumps on the road. We've already seen Apple and AT&T's servers overloaded on the first day of pre-orders, the ship date for the next set of phones pushed back due to high demand, and die-hard fans in line outside of Apple locations a week before the phone is actually available. It's a lot to live up to, and the iPhone 4 is doing its best -- with features like a super-fast A4 CPU, a new front-facing camera and five megapixel shooter on the back, a completely new industrial design, and that outrageous Retina Display, no one would argue that Apple has been asleep at the wheel. So the question turns to whether or not the iPhone 4 can live up to the intense hype. Can it deliver on the promises Steve Jobs made at WWDC, and can it cement Apple's position in the marketplace in the face of mounting competition from the likes of Google and Microsoft? We have the answers to those questions -- and many more -- in our full review, so read on to find out!

Man shoots AT&T employee, is killed by off-duty cop

A 79-year-old man from Utica, NY entered an AT&T store with a hit list of names and a 357 Magnum. He opened fired, hitting one employee, before an off-duty police officer who was shopping at the store pulled his own gun and shot the attacker dead. The shooter, Abraham Dicken, had held a grudge against the store's employees for months, even threatening them with a gun once before. His hit-list contained the names of six employees.

Hands-on with the new Leica line: Sexytime

Say what you want about Leica but they make some beautiful glass and some great cameras. Today I saw the 18-megapixel M9 (New Yorkers take note: Leica will have loaner units at the New York Photo Festival), the 12-megapixel X1, and the brand new V-LUX 20. I didn’t get a chance to shoot much but [...]

The next Call of Duty game will not be about saving Infinity Ward employees from Activision. I'm a little disappointed.

The WedgePad: You know, a wedge for your iPad

So you need a wedge to put under your iPad. What do you do? Roll up a towel? Buy a stuffed ocelot? Or do you spend $27 on a handmade pillow for your iPad. If you’re crazy, then you’ll do all three. But if you’re sane you’d buy a WedgePad, a bean bag for your iPad. [...]

The Leica V-Lux 20 gets official

There isn't much to say here. We already knew that the Leica V-Lux 20 was going to be a DMC-ZS7 clone with the same 12.1 MP 25-300mm lens arrangement, GPS, and 3-inch LCD. And we were really close on the price, too, stating that it would retail for €549 where in fact it's coming with a €499 MSRP. So yeah, there isn't much to say here but you may wanna click through to view a gallery of the sexy matte black shooter.

And now begins the BioShock MMO rumors

Any of y'all beat BioShock 2? Me neither. Played it for, eh, 20 minutes, then moved onto Napoleon: Total War. Don't worry, though: the game is on my "to do" list. Also on my "to-do" list: whinge about an MMO based on BioShock.

Bullet hell shooter Espgaluda II to be released for iPhone

Bullet hell shooting games (aka maniac shooters) are, according to Wikipedia, shoot 'em ups "in which the entire screen is often almost completely filled with enemy bullets". And one of these games is Espgaluda II, developed by Japan-based Cave, released for arcade machines back in 2005 and now one day away of seeing a release in the App Store.

First screenshots of Medal of Honor sure do look familiar…

Fresh from EA, here’s the very first screenshots of Medal of Honor, currently scheduled for release this fall. It’s quite modern, if you catch my drift. The game was on display at the same EA event where Jimin and I played FIFA World Cup 2010 last week. There’s very little point in spending many words [...]

BioShock 2: Great, good, or sorta meh?

So, BioShock 2. Presumably you've heard of it. It comes out today, and I really can't figure out how I'm supposed to feel. I've read plenty of reviews—Rock, Paper, Shotgun's is my favorite—and they're sorta all over the place. We weren't cool enough to get a review copy, but that's not a big deal; Steam to the rescue.

But what the heck is a back illuminated sensor? DPreviewHas the full release but you’re basically looking at better low-light performance with the back-lit CMOS. I honestly don’t [...]

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 soars past $1 billion in retail sales

Remember back a couple months? The biggest news on Earth was the Infinity Ward and Activision Blizzard screwed up MW2 and the game was going to fall into a bucket of fail. There were boycotts, petitions, and general chaos concerning the shooter. Then it launched. Then people started playing it in droves. Then people shut-up and within two months the title surpassed $1,000,000,000 in retail sales.

Sony hasn't given up on Home, its virtual world filled with avatars and overall weirdness. It just launched Sodium One, which is the latest Home world you and your avatar can spend the day in. There's a game to go along with it, one that looks an awful lot like Wipeout, which isn't bad at all.
