  • EVO 4G launch day antics: Sprint’s computers overwhelmed, Radio Shack listing CDMA iPhones?

EVO 4G launch day antics: Sprint’s computers overwhelmed, Radio Shack listing CDMA iPhones?

You might imagine that we're getting a pretty wild variety of EVO 4G-related tips today, seeing how it's launch day and all -- but a couple really stood out for us:
    • Sprint's activation system is apparently buckling under the pressure, an issue that's giving us nightmarish flashbacks to iPhone launches of days gone by. We've even heard reports of poor shoppers being "turned away" when reps are stymied by the situation. A wildly successful product is both a blessing and curse, is it not?
    • We've gotten multiple tips saying that Radio Shack now lists a $400 early termination fee in its contract for the iPhone on Verizon and Sprint. Our guess is that this is just some generic verbiage, not a sign of an impending CDMA launch, but you never know.
Keep us updated with your launch day travails, folks!

[Thanks to everyone who sent these in]

Nexus One not coming to Verizon after all?

Many were questioning the Nexus One’s fate on Verzion when the HTC Incredible was announced a few weeks back. After all it’s nearly the same phone, instead skinned with HTC’s Sense UI. Well the question might be answered as Google’s Nexus One’s page now tells shoppers to buy the Incredible instead. Previously the same line [...]

Best Buy now hawking Viliv’s wares

Viliv makes some hot, little portables. That's a fact. The X70 and S5 touchscreen along with the S7 convertible netbook are among the best in their respective niche markets. But previously the products were only available from online retailers, which of course limits their visibility from a whole segment of potential customers. Starting Monday though, Best Buy shoppers will be able to pick up the products in store and online. There will even be an instant rebate available on the none-3G modem-equipped models.

New packaging concept helps lazy shoppers find fresh produce

Don't you hate standing in the supermarket, with all those people standing around you, peering in your cart and passing judgement over your purchases? You can code a beautiful, standards compliant cross-browser compatible website in your sleep, but you're stymied by which head of lettuce is the freshest. Technology is here to help you, comrade: as time passes, the barcode on the packaging slowly fades.

ENON: Fujitsu robot talks shoppers into buying stuff (videos)

We saw Fujitsu's "service robot" ENON back in October 2008 during the CEATEC exhibition in Chiba/Japan (see video below), and it seems the friendly guy has been selling well in the meantime. The robot can be used as an information terminal, for entertainment purposes, patrolling, assistance etc. And last weekend, ENON could be seen in the wild, namely in a shopping mall in Osaka. That specific ENON spent the entire Saturday interacting with customers. Equipped with a camera and face recognition software, the robot is capable of detecting a human's gender and age. Combine this with ENON's ability to "speak" and move around, and you get a store clerk of a very different kind.

Sports Authority to sell the Wii because, well, it’s an exercise device

Next time you're at Sports Authority applying for a hunting license, you could pick up replacement Wii Remote or even the Wii Fit as the retailer is getting into the gaming business. But seriously, this kind of makes sense and has apparently been in the works for months.

Walmart offering $100 gift card with any BlackBerry purchase (but only next week)

We're onto you, Wally World. Granted, you already confessed that you'd be dishing out a deal a week until sometime in the future, but hey, we'll feign surprise without thinking twice. Next week's bargain is a good one for those in the market for one of RIM's handsets, as Walmart shoppers will be given a $100 gift card (to Walmart, obviously) if they purchase practically any BlackBerry phone on a 2-year contract from AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile or Verizon Wireless. The offer begins at 8AM local time this Saturday and runs through November 20th, and if you're looking to see exactly which handsets are included in the deal, have a look past the break.
