Sony Ericsson announces Xperia X8, plus Android 2.1 updates to Xperia X10 line

Two pieces of good news here for Sony Ericsson fans: the company today announced the next phone in their Xperia line, the X8. Slotting in below the X10, the X8 will be its smaller, cheaper sibling.
Speaking of the X10, here's the other piece of good news: they (as in all three types of the X10), will get a bump from Android 1.6 to Android 2.1 in Q3 of this year. For the original X10, the bump will also bring HD video recording, which is a neat bonus.

Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus now live on O2 UK

If you bundle the original Pre in with the Pre Plus -- and you pretty much can, considering how closely related they are -- this is quickly becoming one of the most protracted, phased mobile product launches in memory. Yes, that's right: as promised, O2 UK has now launched both the Pre Plus alongside its scrappier little sibling, the Pixi Plus, and you can get either one for as little as zero quid depending on how you play your cards. The Pixi Plus goes in your pocket for free on any plan, while the Pre Plus stays free as long as you spend at least £40 ($58) a month and scales up to £99 ($143) on the cheaper plans. Samsung i8920 Omnia HD2 leaking its way across the net as we speak

Samsung's successor to the Symbian-powered i8910 (aka OmniaHD) has just bust its pipes, and is now leaking all over the internet (too soon?).
The leaks thus far point to a 4" Super AMOLED screen, a 12MP camera with both Xenon and LED flash (why not?), 30fps 720p video recording (just like its older sibling), and 16 or 32 GB internal storage, all running atop Symbian^3.
Oh, and it also includes the soon-to-be-standard-on-high-end-phones WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0.

BlackBerry Curve 8530 impressions
Posted on December 21, 2009 | No CommentsWe don't know, but it seems like RIM has enlisted a couple more CDMA engineers because the gap between new devices launching on GSM and then making their way to CDMA has been getting noticeably smaller over time. The BlackBerry Curve 8520 was launched on T-Mobile only a few short months ago, and it's already made its way to both Verizon and Sprint. It's not the same powerhouse as its older sibling the Tour, but this device packs a heck of a lot of punch into a very pocketable package. Read past the break for our extended impressions.

iPhones rejoice as Ustream Live Broadcaster hits App Store, other smartphones wonder what all the ruckus is
Posted on December 9, 2009 | No CommentsWhen it comes to streaming live video from a smartphone, there's an app for that and there has been for a long, long time -- unless you're an iPhoner. With Qik for the iPhone a delayed broadcast was possible, but it took months for the thing to break out of its WiFi-only shackles. Now you, like Bill O'Reilly, can do it live courtesy of the Ustream's Live Broadcaster, newly available in the App Store. It's not the first to stream live video from Apple's handset, an app called Knocking gets that distinction after getting the nod last week, but it is the first to allow live broadcasting, it works over 3G, and it's available for free right now for iPhone 3G and 3GS models running OS 3.1 and above. So go ahead, start those cameras rolling and tell all your friends how great it is -- just don't be heartbroken if they're not all that impressed.
P.S. It's worth noting that Ustream also works in local record mode thus turning the iPhone 3G into a video camera like its newer 3GS sibling. Motorola MT710 bringing its Droid-ish good looks to China this month

China Mobile is about to spoil its half billion subscribers with yet another Android smartphone in the 3.something-inch category. The Droid's keyboard-deprived younger sibling, the MT710 is about to hit Chinese stores this month, with TD-SCDMA 3G capabilities and OPhone OS 1.5 giving it a distinctly local flavor. WiFi connectivity will also be available, thanks to Moto playing nice with China's new security protocol, and the CPU has also changed to a 624MHz Marvel PXA310 chip, which is growing a bit long in the tooth now. Still, with that dashing red stripe on its side and a presumably thinner chassis, the MT710 just might be somebody's idea of a Droid perfected. Sony Ericsson Kurara previewed way ahead of release
Posted on November 23, 2009 | No CommentsWe were promised a preview of Sony Ericsson's Symbian-sporting Satio sibling, and indeed here we are, looking at the machine-translated Kurara analysis courtesy of Eldar from Mobile Review. He pulls no punches in his introduction by noting that the new handset will offer little in terms of specs to trump the Samsung i8910 HD, and sketching out the tough market it'll have to compete in once the Nokia X6 comes out and starts grabbing market and mindshare alike. As to the phone itself, he describes the 8.1 megapixel camera as an "inexpensive" unit and lets the sample photos and 720p sample video shot with it speak for themselves. Battery life was found to be "lacking," though we congratulate SE on electing to use a 3.5mm headphone jack and MicroSD memory expansion over its own proprietary formats. Overall, the Kurara was "pleasant to use," but lacked the necessary wow factor and its fate, says Eldar, will depend on just how keenly Sony Ericsson wants to price it.

Ten Apps All New Android Users Should Check Out

While the tech-loving world continues to debate the merits of the Droid following its launch on Friday, it's pretty safe to say that the Android platform has seen a pretty hefty influx of users as of late. In the past two weeks alone, we've seen the aforementioned Droid, it's cheaper, younger sibling, the Droid Eris, and the Sprint Moment all hit the shelves; if any of them sold even reasonably well, there's a lot of new folk cracking open the Android Market for the first time right now.
Whether you're an iPhone convert, an ex-Nokian, or just a stranger to smartphones as a whole, the Android Market can be a pretty daunting place. While Android might not have quite as many apps as the leading competition, it still has a bit over 10,000 - and that's a hell of a lot for any newcomer to weed through.

Sony Ericsson Kurara suffers leakage, reveals HD label?

Boy, we sure do love our early glimpses of pre-release hardware, and today we have not one, but two sources of purported pictures of the Sony Ericsson Kurara. Touted as a sibling to the Satio, the Kurara is mooted to have a 3.5-inch AMOLED touch-sensitive screen, 8.1 megapixel camera and, wait for it, 720p video recording. The image above seems to confirm this with a big "HD" inscription next to the camera lens, but that label is missing in the gallery below. We'll just put that inconsistency down to the extremely early samples on show, and start getting all frothed up in excitement over the possible UX inclusion on this Symbian S60 device when it starts selling in the first half of 2010.

Cartel’s CT-2000 in-car Bluetooth handset adds music control, can’t shake the retro

Cartel's CT-1000 brought about lots of laughs here at Engadget HQ, and frankly, we're shocked and amazed (and glad) these guys are still hanging tough two years later. The newest in-car handset system is the predictably titled CT-2000, which includes a Bluetooth-enabled handset that's meant to be permanently installed within your vehicle and wired to your audio system. Once installed, all of your mobile calls can be routed to this -- because, you know, chatting on a corded phone circa 1992 is entirely more safe than chatting on your mobile or using a handsfree solution. The only difference we can spot between the new guy and the aged sibling is the addition of music control, a "slimmer" (albeit wider) design, room for your phone contacts and one-touch speed dialing. There's no mention of a price, but trust us, you're better off in the dark.
