Nokia N8 to launch on August 25 in UK, according to local store employee

As official confirmations go, this is the weakest kind. A Nokia store employee has informed Pocket-lint that the N8 hero device we've all been waiting for will be launching in the Queen's backyard on Wednesday, August 25. That's only a day off from the August 24 tip that we had and definitely seems to narrow down the release window, but let's retain our signature skepticism. Until one of Nokia's higher-ups or their PR team busts out an official release date, we're still dealing with speculative information. Then again, if you wanna book that week of August off from work, we'd totally understand.

Android-powered entry-level HTC Wildfire says hello to the EU a day early (with video)

HTC held a press conference in Germany today where they showed off their successor to the entry-level Tattoo, dubbed the Wildfire. As strange as it sounds, it appears that HTC weren't quite ready to announce it, but once the news was out, it spread like Wildfire across the web, so HTC went and confirmed it with a press release dated for tomorrow. So I guess we're a bit like time travellers now, no? The phone is destined for the European and Asian markets in Q3 of this year, and will be available in black, white, red, and (the often under-appreciated) brown.

New NEC technology detects pirated online videos “in seconds”

Software that helps to detect "illegal" video content on the web automatically isn't really new, but NEC claims its technology has two selling points that sets it apart from similar solutions: speed and accuracy. The company says its system can identify pirated video material in a "matter of seconds", with a detection rate of 96% and at a false alarm rate of just five in one million cases.

Rumor: LG Cookie to be followed up by the LG Muffin?

Man, that was a surreal headline to write. Two baked goods in one sentence, and we’re not even talking about Android. With over 10 million units pushed, the Cookie is LG’s best selling device ever. It should come as no surprise, then, that it’s getting a sequel. According to information leaked to PhoneArena, the second coming [...]

Mysterious iPhone model found in app usage records?

O iPhone3,1, where art thou? Last time we spotted that signature, it was buried in lines of code as part of a beta OS 3.0 firmware build. Now according to data from analytics software inside iBART, the San Francisco-centric transportation app has been host to a new visitor with the aforementioned device identification number. As MacRumors points out, iPhone2,1 was originally spotted in October 2008 and later became the iPhone 3GS about eight months later. Not that it's necessarily the case Apple will keep to the same schedule -- nor should it come as a surprise that the company's maybe-kinda-sorta looking into a successor to its prized moneymaker -- but if you happen to be in the Bay Area and see someone quietly pulling out a sleek touchscreen, it might be in your best interest to make friends.

HP to merge printers and PC to bolster both

HP's printer division, long a cash cow, is being folded into its PC division after sales of printers and ink fell this year. Most companies broke out their printer divisions once they realized they could make a lot of money there but now that HP is beating Dell, the company may see a good reason to bring printers and PCs together.

Water found on the Moon, BYOB for the pool party

That was quick. NASA just released some data last week recorded by the LRO that indicated water might be present and suddenly an Indian probe actually found some. India’s first Moon probe , Chandrayaan-1, is equipped with sensors to detect the electromagnetic signature of water. Furthermore, these sensors cannot penetrate very deep and the data [...]

  • Poll – Hero vs Hero: To chin, or not to chin…

Poll – Hero vs Hero: To chin, or not to chin…

When Sprint announced plans to carry the HTC Hero this morning, they had a bit of a surprise (albeit one that had already been rumored) in store: it looked totally different than the Hero we'd come to know and love. The once square edges have been rounded out, and the jutting chin that has been a signature across HTC's Android lineup thus far has been dropped entirely. Some loved the new look; others responded as if the new HTC Hero had insulted their family and razed their house to the ground. So lets settle this once and for all (as scientifically as is possible in a blog post on the Internet): it's poll time. Which HTC Hero do you prefer: the original, Chintastic Hero, or Sprint's shaved down edition?

CDMA HTC Hero spied without signature chin – Hot or Not?

The HTC Hero is undoubtedly the best looking Android device. Don’t even try to argue with that fact. But the CDMA-variant of the Hero might be radically different. So much, that I’m not sure if I dig it. Right now the Internet is aflutter with ohs and ahs about the redesigned phone, but I think [...]

    Hands-on: The Bose QuietComfort 15

I just got back from one of Bose’s signature demos where they trick you into seeing their products in a whole new light. It’s clever and it sometimes works. The trick went down like this: they showed us the QuietComfort 2 headphones, the older model, and ran about 92 decibels of airplane noise in a [...]

Nokia Mako becomes Nokia Surge, launches on AT&T next week

Here's the Nokia timeline so far:
    • 1987: Nokia releases the Mobira Cityman 900, one of the world's first handheld cell phones
    • 1994: Nokia releases the 2100 series, which is the first to feature their signature ringtone. The song is forever burned into our brains.
    • 2003: Nokia releases the Nokia 1100 and sells 200 million units, making it one of the best selling handsets of all time.
    • 2009: Nokia releases the Surge, a cheapo crappy QWERTY slider.
    • Yeah, yeah - that's not exactly a fair portrayal. Nokia released an expensive crappy QWERTY slider this year, too.
