Nokia N8 benchmarked against N97, makes it look old and busted

Nokia's new hotness, the N8, is starting our week off in fine style. Finest Fones, what looks to be a Symbian-only mobile news site, is reporting its own tests done with the handset that show it comfortably outpacing its predecessor. Of course, in these fog of war-obscured times (before proper hardware is dished out), we can't really be sure of the veracity of what we read, but Symbian^3's newfound ability to exploit graphics hardware seems to be paying off relative to the more primordial ways of the S60 5th software on the N97. The intrepid investigators found a 180 percent performance delta between the two phones in Speedy Go! tests, while the N8 ran through a cycle of FPC bench 3D with perfect 60fps scores each and every time. We won't be convinced by the purported 680MHz CPU inside till we test it out for ourselves with a load of widget-heavy homescreens, but early signs seem to be encouraging.

Best Buy now hawking Viliv’s wares

Viliv makes some hot, little portables. That's a fact. The X70 and S5 touchscreen along with the S7 convertible netbook are among the best in their respective niche markets. But previously the products were only available from online retailers, which of course limits their visibility from a whole segment of potential customers. Starting Monday though, Best Buy shoppers will be able to pick up the products in store and online. There will even be an instant rebate available on the none-3G modem-equipped models.

Video: HTC Supersonic briefly caught on camera

We started drooling about the HTC Supersonic as soon as we heard the words "Android" and "WiMax" in the same sentence. Once "4.3 inch display" got thrown into the mix, our salivary glands just couldn't be stopped. While HTC hasn't made even the smallest of official peeps about this thing yet, it looks like someone out there has gotten their hands all over it - and just as anyone with early access to a new, unannounced cell phone should do, they took some video.

More Shots of Microsoft’s Project Pink “Turtle” and “Pure” leak out; hitting Verizon on April 20th?

We're still trying our darnedest to not feed the hype machine surrounding Project Pink, considering that all signs are indicating that neither phone is anything to get worked up about. With that said, a couple of new shots of the Turtle (the stout, portrait sliding QWERTY handset) and the Pure (the horizontal QWERTY handset pictured above) have just leaked out, along with some information about its impending launch on Verizon. Check it all out after the jump.

All the signs were already indicating that T-Mobile was planning on launching the gloriously beautiful HTC HD2, but good ol’ Stevie Ballmer just confirmed it during his CES 2010 keynote. Dates? Nope. Pricing? Nope. The best we’ve got is still HTC head honcho Peter Chou’s confirmation that it’d be launching in the US in “Early [...]

  • Verizon to FCC: hey, you said ETFs were okay!

Verizon to FCC: hey, you said ETFs were okay!

Even though the FCC just gave Verizon until Monday to respond to its inquiries regarding the company's new $350 "advanced device" early termination fee, they've shown some hustle here and delivered their 77 (yes, seventy-seven) page response today. Here are the two big takeaways consumers are going to care about:
    • The company justifies the advanced device ETF a couple ways; it starts out by referring to some 2003 statements by the FCC in which the Commission says that it doesn't support the concept of customers breaking contracts and that carriers have a right to recoup those fees. Of course, that really doesn't drive to the point here, which is that Verizon's now charging two completely different ETFs based on a rather arbitrary line in the sand drawn by Verizon; to that end, the carrier says that the additional cost it incurs to procure the devices on its advanced list is greater than the difference between the two ETFs ($175) on average. It also says that it needs that extra guaranteed revenue to keep its broadband network up to snuff, since advanced devices are more likely to strain it.
    • Regarding the weirdness at the end of the contract -- where a customer still owes $120 23 months into a two-year deal -- Verizon says that it's still losing money (read: we should be thankful they're prorating at all). As an example, it says that its average loss for a customer canceling 12 months into a contract is about double the $230 prorated ETF on an advanced device, and that statistically speaking, customers are far more likely to cancel early on than late. While we don't doubt that, we think they're trying to divert the conversation here just a bit.
It's hard to say whether these responses are going to sate the FCC on the matter, but seeing how Verizon's showing no signs that it's interesting in changing its policies, this could still turn into a battle royale. Stay tuned -- something tells us this isn't the last we'll hear on the matter.

    [Thanks, Daniel P.]

  • HTC Hero having intermittent text messaging problems?

HTC Hero having intermittent text messaging problems?

There's not exactly much in the way of official statements on the matter just yet, but it looks like support forums have been piling up with reports of text messaging problems on the HTC Hero over the past few weeks, and with no signs of a fix in sight. Apparently, the phone can send texts just fine, but runs into a little trouble when it comes to receiving 'em, with most folks reporting only intermittent problems, and at least some not receiving any at all. Interestingly, the problem seems to be occurring in both the US and the UK, so it would seem to be a problem on the phone's end and not the carrier's, and a few people seem to have had some (brief) success after resetting the device. Of course, there are also plenty of folks having no problems at all, but there doesn't seem to be any question that the issue is out there. So, have you been missing some texts on your Hero? Let us know in comments.

Theory: Danger’s Sidekick data explosion was (DUDUNT! DUDUNT!) sabotage?

I can't stand it, i know you planned it Ima set it straight, this Watergate I can't stop textin' when i'm in there 'cause your crystal ball ain't so crystal clear So, while you sit back and wonder why I'm missing my pics when I slide my 'Kick Oh my god, it's a mirage I'm tellin' y'all it's sabotage So,so,so, so listen up 'cause you can't say nothin' You shut me down with a push of your button But AppleInsider knows why your data's gone I'll tell you now I keep it on and on:
...someone with access to the servers at the datacenter must have inserted a time bomb to wipe out not just all of the data, but also all of the backup tapes, and finally, I suspect, reformatting the server hard drives so that the service itself could not be restarted with a simple reboot (and to erase any traces of the time bomb itself)... If this was an ordinary sort of failure, the service would have come back within a day, so once again, all signs point to sabotage.
