Ikaros: Photos of solar-powered “Space Yacht” in outer space
Posted on June 18, 2010 | No Comments
We first blogged about Ikaros, a solar powered "space yacht" developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), in September last year. The idea was to use solar photons to propel satellites in outer space to boost energy-efficiency. That yacht was eventually launched on May 21, and now we have the first pictures of Ikaros moving through outer space.

AT&T: upgrade to iPhone 4 up to six months early
Posted on June 7, 2010 | No CommentsSo look, we know the dilemma you're in. You nabbed that iPhone 3G or 3GS a little late in the game, and now you've got to wait until December in order to snag the iPhone 4 at a discounted rate. Lucky for you, Apple and AT&T have worked to give folks like you a little leniency, with existing AT&T users able to upgrade to the iPhone 4 "up to six months early." In other words, if your current contract expires at any point in 2010, you're now eligible to grab an iPhone 4 at $199 (16GB) or $299 (32GB) so long as you agree to stay faithful to a carrier you may or may not loathe for another two years. Good thing you've got until the 24th to really think it over.AT&T: upgrade to iPhone 4 up to six months early originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 13:30:00 EST. Aava Virta Android reference platform will be the first shipping Moorestown smartphone
Posted on June 2, 2010 | No CommentsSure, Intel might not be planning for Moorestown-based smartphones to hit the market for at least another six months, and the LG GW990 might have died a quiet death, but that's not stopping Aava from getting right in the game with its Virta Android, an Atom Z600-based reference smartphone designed for developer testing. Slated to ship in Q3, the Virta features a Moorestown processor, a 3.8-inch 864 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, quad-band EDGE radios with AT&T 3G support, WiFi, Bluetooth, a five megapixel video camera, and a microSD slot. We're assuming the shipping version will look a lot like the prototype Aava device we've been seeing for a while now, but Aava has some fancier renders up on its site, so we'll see what happens and how much this costs when this thing arrives.

Over Six Months Later, Google Finally Closes AdMob Acquisition
Posted on May 27, 2010 | No Comments
Over six months after announcing its plans to acquire leading mobile ad network AdMob, Google has finally closed the deal. The news comes a week after the FTC unanimously approved the deal, after holding it up for months as it decided whether or not to block it on antitrust grounds.
When it finally reached a decision, the FTC pointed to Apple's recent entry into the mobile ad market with iAds as evidence that there would still be plenty of competition in the nascent mobile advertising space (an argument that we made before, as did many others). The FTC may have also been swayed by blog posts from developers questioned during the FTC inquiry who felt that the deal should go through. Some developers also wrote that they felt like the FTC had an agenda and that they were being pressured to say things that would hurt Google's cause.

Sony Ericsson X10 family to get Android 2.1 in ‘Q4 2010′
Posted on May 5, 2010 | No CommentsThe Xperia X10, one of the big mindshare-grabbing devices of the smartphone world, made us wait a cool six months between its November announcement and wide retail availability in April. One of the secret hopes while all that waiting was going on was that perhaps SE would surprise us and upgrade the dusty old Android 1.6 base installation to a fresh and creamy Eclair (2.1) or even a frosty Froyo (2.2) treat shortly after launch. Time to lay those dreams to rest, dear friends, as Sony Ericsson has come with an official schedule for upgrading the firmware on the Xperia X10 and its X10 mini and X10 mini pro siblings, which places the Android 2.1 delivery in the fourth quarter of 2010 -- and knowing the company that probably means closer to Christmas than Halloween. All we can say is you'd better really like that UX platform a great deal, because it'll be the only thing you'll be seeing for quite a while on Sony Ericsson's Googlephones.Sony Ericsson X10 family to get Android 2.1 in 'Q4 2010' originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 05 May 2010 08:24:00 EST. The US might finally get the black Wii
Posted on April 27, 2010 | No Comments
Okay, this isn't even funny anymore. Why the hell isn't the black Wii available in the states? It has been available in Japan for almost nine months and about six months in Europe. That's just crazy. Previously Nintendo even stated that it had no plans on releasing a Wii in any other color besides white in America. But that stance might have changed.

Apple sued over wetness indicators
Posted on April 20, 2010 | No Comments
It's been a tough few hours for Apple. First their iPhone XXX 4G HD ]I[ gets stoled and then they get sued for those little dots inside iPhones that turn red when exposed to water. Inside the headphone jack and under the iPhone cable port are two little dots. If you go into an Apple Store to have your phone repaired and they see those things are red, you're sunk. The Genius will shake his head, slowly, tut-tutting through thin lips at your foolishness.
Well, some folks are angry at Apple for refusing to service their potentially bewetted iPhones. However, those customers are claiming their iPhones never got wet.

Apple refreshing the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air line next week?
Posted on April 8, 2010 | No Comments
Nicholas just voiced a valid question in the always-entertaining but private CrunchGear chatroom, "Why would I pay $1,500 for a Core 2 Duo in 2010?" He then answered it by saying, "I wouldn't." Well said, sir. Apple's current crop of notebooks are a slap in the face to its customers, but maybe Apple will finally catch up to HP, Dell, Acer, Gateway, Lenovo, Alienware, Asus, MSI, Sony, and Toshiba next week if this rumor pans out.

CNN & Cracked take the piss out of Apple and Jobs
Posted on February 17, 2010 | No Comments
As much as we love Apple products here at CrunchGear, sometimes we don't particularly care for Apple the company. Realistically, if you look at their track record, there's quite an interesting list of abuses towards their customers with the supposedly untouchable Steve Jobs at the center of it all.

AT&T to launch two webOS devices in the next six months
Posted on January 6, 2010 | No CommentsThey’re keepin’ mum on exactly which devices they’ll be getting, but AT&T just announced at their press developer conference that they’ll be offering up not one, but two Palm webOS devices by mid-2010. Sure, it could be the Pre and the Pixi – but at this point, that’d be all kinds of disappointing. Crunch Network: [...] -

This page just went live over on AT&T's site. While it doesn't give a whole lot of specifics, it does confirm that we'll be seeing no less than three Android handset hit AT&T's shelves sometime in the first six months of this year.

webOS paid apps coming to Europe in March 2010
Posted on January 4, 2010 | No Comments
Okay, so this is quite the lag from October's North American availability, but at least when the paid portion of Palm's App Catalog rolls out across Europe it shouldn't experience the stuttering start it suffered back in the US of A. Palm has excitedly blurted out the news on its developer network blog, but not without the requisite garnishings of buzzwords like "leverage," "freedom," "choice," "control," and "speed," as well as something about "faster cycle times" -- all of it designed to get more developers onboard. Kinda ironic the company is boasting about fast cycle times when it can't transition its paid Catalog to Europe in less than six months, but hey -- the Pre already has that one killer app, and it's free, so what do you care?
