Nokia N8 to launch on August 25 in UK, according to local store employee

As official confirmations go, this is the weakest kind. A Nokia store employee has informed Pocket-lint that the N8 hero device we've all been waiting for will be launching in the Queen's backyard on Wednesday, August 25. That's only a day off from the August 24 tip that we had and definitely seems to narrow down the release window, but let's retain our signature skepticism. Until one of Nokia's higher-ups or their PR team busts out an official release date, we're still dealing with speculative information. Then again, if you wanna book that week of August off from work, we'd totally understand.

  • IT in a box: the ClearBOX

IT in a box: the ClearBOX

As a full time systems administrator, I can tell you without equivocation that IT is hard. There are lots of little problems that occur. Operating systems are fragile. Automation is great, but requires constant vigilance. So I approach things like the ClearBOX with much skepticism. An all-in-one IT solution sounds too good to be true, and it very likely is. I'm sure it offers some great features, and in the right environment it can be a good purchase. But there is no holy grail to unified IT services, because every environment is different, and the only constant is change.

Does anyone in tech pay attention to unemployment numbers? Hard to buy that new gizmo when you don’t have a job, right?

Writing about tech is so peculiar. On one hand we're expected to be enthusiastic about the things we cover; no one wants to see us being negative and dismissive about every little thing. That's no fun. On the other hand, you don't want a bunch of ninnies bleating on about how great this year's piece of plastic is compared to last year's. How is that useful to anyone? A bit of skepticism is necessary so we don't come across as cheerleaders for this or that company, or for this or that device. You can't be objective if you worship the ground that the two Steves—Jobs and Ballmer—walk on.
