HP’s CTO makes more noises about Slate not running Windows
Posted on June 17, 2010 | No Comments
At a recent conference about tablets and the future of publishing, there was a Q&A with the CTO of HP's person systems group. While he used typical CTO doubletalk, there was a few nuggets of information to be gleaned from his rather cryptic words on the future of products like HP's Slate PC.

Motorola Droid 2 fully exposed?
Posted on June 10, 2010 | No CommentsAnd finally, the puzzle pieces are coming together. There's been a lot of confusion the past few weeks about these two new models for Verizon in Motorola's pipeline, but by all accounts, this seems to be the A955 Droid 2 in its entirety -- the true successor to the original Droid, of course, and a distinctly different product than the more slate-like Xtreme. It looks like Moto has killed off the Droid's major pain points, giving the new model a more tactile keyboard and eliminating the nearly useless d-pad; the shiny bezel around the top half is a matter of personal opinion, but we don't think we mind it from the blurry shots we've seen.
As specs go, we're looking at a faster 750MHz OMAP core -- probably similar to the 720MHz silicon quoted in the XT720's data -- along with a 3.7-inch display, 8GB of internal storage paired with an 8GB microSD card in the box, and a 5 megapixel camera. What's missing is an HDMI port and Froyo -- current test units are said to be running 2.1, so hopefully we'll see a 2.2 upgrade in the near term. So, Droid owners: is this the golden ticket to get you to shell out another couple hundred dollars? As a bonus, follow the break for alleged video of the Droid 2's boot sequence, which shows a reworked version of the scary red droid eye we're accustomed to.Continue reading Motorola Droid 2 fully exposed?

Dell Streak review
Posted on June 6, 2010 | No Commentsdigg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Dell_Streak_review_it_s_a_huge_friggin_phone'; Streak. It needs no introduction, as this slate's been gaining a lot of attention amongst gadget lovers around the world. Thanks to the UK launch last Friday, we were one of the first on this planet to procure Dell's finalized Android 1.6 phone from O2. Yep, you heard right -- Engadget's now in possession of two Streaks, with the older one still in its original and somewhat unstable prototype state. Our new toy sports a matte "carbon" finish instead of chrome (no word on future availability; the red version's coming in two weeks' time), and now 399MB of RAM instead of 405MB (according to Android System Info app; yet it's advertised as 512MB). Anyhow, now that we have the real deal, there's plenty to go through, so join us after the break to see if the Streak's really going to start a new trend.Continue reading Dell Streak review

Acer Liquid gets early Android 2.2 ROM, unstable CPU unlock (video)
Posted on June 6, 2010 | No Comments
Nexus One, EVO 4G, Droid and Dream sure, but the Acer Liquid? Yes, the underclocked Snapdragon slate that never made it stateside has just received its own Android 2.2 port. Though still in early alpha with no Wi-Fi or camera functionality and plenty of bugs to boot, the freshly frozen yogurt has the Liquid turning tricks already -- with very playable-looking framerates in Raging Thunder II and Flash video support. Early adopters note that the phone isn't terribly stable at higher CPU frequencies, so don't expect to push that processor much higher than stock, but even 768MHz is reportedly nice and snappy when you're running Android 2.2. Video proof after the break, and you'll find the unfinished ROM at our more coverage link if you're the adventurous sort. [Thanks, Miroslav]Continue reading Acer Liquid gets early Android 2.2 ROM, unstable CPU unlock (video)

Hands-on Video with the Viliv X10 Windows 7 version
Posted on June 4, 2010 | No Comments
Viliv unveiled the Android-powered X10 a few days back at Computex. There was indication that Viliv might offer a Windows 7 version and UMPC Portal got a little face time with the slate. Is it just me or does it look and feel a lot like the HP Slate was meant to be?

Unknown HTC Android phone appears, shrouded in mystery
Posted on June 1, 2010 | No Comments
For those that have only recently tuned in, the Android Guys have just unearthed photos of an upcoming Android handset from HTC, which they speculate to be the forthcoming HTC Aria.
As you'll recall, in last week's episode, we thought that the HTC Aria was the QWERTY phone spotted at the FCC some months ago. However, the phone here appears to be of the slate variety... so... where does this leave us?
Confused for a start, but no more than usual after a long weekend.

Dell Streak free on contract in UK, assuming £25 monthly plan
Posted on June 1, 2010 | No CommentsYou know that Dell Streak tabletphone that's got us all hot and bothered these days? Yeah, well, what with all the stabbing, we totally didn't notice that the device has already been priced in the UK. When it launches on June 4th at The Carphone Warehouse, the Streak will cost you a sizable £429 off-contract -- the same Apple wants for an iPad 16GB -- but not a penny if you opt for its data plans (carried by O2). With a £25 mobile broadband contract or a £35 voice and unlimited data contract, the five-inch WVGA slate will be yours to take home free -- the same as Carphone's iPhone 3G pricing. We don't know quite yet if O2 UK's official tariffs will be cheaper or more expensive, but the tree doesn't grow too far from the apple, as they say.Continue reading Dell Streak free on contract in UK, assuming £25 monthly plan

Dell Streak’s Gorilla Glass screen: torture tested for your amusement (video)
Posted on May 29, 2010 | No Commentsdigg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Dell_Streak_has_an_indestructible_screen_video'; So we've been hearing rumors about the Dell Streak being some kind of a rugged bad boy. Word is, the Gorilla Glass display on this 5-inch slate is good enough to withstand pretty much anything a human would care to throw its way. Them's fighting words where we come from, so we did the only thing a responsible tech blog can do -- we put them to the test. Should you be brave enough to follow us after the break, you'll come upon our best efforts to destroy our own Streak prototype, albeit with little success. Then again, the end result might be less important than the journey there, which is not to be missed.Continue reading Dell Streak's Gorilla Glass screen: torture tested for your amusement (video)

Via to flood the US market with five sub-$150 Android tablets by year’s end
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No Comments
2010 was called the year of the tablet and Via might make that come true. The chip maker plans on releasing five tablets by the end of the year. The kicker is that these five models will cost between $100 and $150 -- or so says a Bloomberg report. These tablets are said to run Android and will be available in the states in the second half of the 2010.
Via's upcoming tablets are of course in response to the iPad and is a classic CE move. Instead of producing a quality product, a company, in this case Via, is outing a whole range of low-cost (and likely cheap) alternatives.

HP Taiwan VP confirms webOS plans, indicates the Slate is on track for 2010 launch
Posted on May 21, 2010 | No CommentsWell this is good to know. An HP Taiwan VP apperently let it slip that HP is working on mobile devices powered by webOS. It’s a shocker, I know. You would think that after HP spent over a billion dollars buying Palm, they would archive all of the acquired intellectual properties and keep moving forward [...] -
The ExoPC’s release date and GPU, everyone
Posted on May 6, 2010 | No Comments
We've been following the ExoPC's development with a bit of curiosity and excitement. It's one of the only tablets, along with the Notion Ink Adam and WePad, that has a chance to grab a bit of marketshare away from the iPad. The ExoPC just got a bit more interesting, too. Blog Geek just got confirmation that the slate will use the Broadcom BCM70012 or Crystal HD, which should have enough juice to provide silky-smooth 1080p HD video playback. Best of all, though, the tablet is set to come out in within a few months.
