Hello, Moshi: a voice controlled alarm clock

moshiI've been wondering how long it'll be before we start talking to all our appliances and gadgets, just like the gang on Star Trek talks to their computers. Typing, pressing buttons, waving wands around in the air: it's all so inefficient! We should be able to simply speak to our gadgets to have them do our bidding. Today we're one step closer to that golden Utopia, with Moshi, the voice controlled alarm clock. Fun video inside!

Sling drops four new devices, all of which are worth a passing, if mention

Slingbox has released four new placeshifting devices. They are, in order of appearance: Slingbox 700U This box allows HD receivers to “sling” their “content” over the “Internet” directly, cutting out the laborous process of videotaping TV, converting it at one of those strip mall conversion places, and mailing it in the post. It connects to any set-top [...]

Like clockwork, BlackBerry Bold 9700 gets ColorWared

Nothing says "I do not accept the normal social conventions of a business-oriented mobile device; I do, however, accept its software and lovely keyboard" quite like sending your BlackBerry in for a retina-burning ColorWare job. It's been done before, it's being done now, and it'll be done until pigs rule the sky -- and if you're craving the latest and greatest way to shock your colleagues when you reach into your double-breasted suit coat's inside pocket, look no further than the recolored Bold 9700. There are fully six different components that can be independently colored to your liking, and we hear that Mike Lazaridis loses 60 seconds of sleep every time one of 'em gets painted something other than black, so get to it -- it'll run you $159 plus the cost of the phone itself.

  • Samsung’s ‘glamorous’ Diva Collection 2010 officially announced

Samsung’s ‘glamorous’ Diva Collection 2010 officially announced

There's nothing like a faux quilted battery cover to get the blood pumping, so if you've been unable to sleep since laying eyes on those magnificent Diva phones from Samsung last week as you've desperately sought high and low for more information, trust us, we feel you. Fortunately, Sammy's now seen fit to drop some knowledge on the pair of handsets targeted squarely at the fairer sex; first up, the S5150 clamshell features a "glittering LED" (their verbiage, not ours) on the outer cover that lights up in interesting ways when calls and other events occur. Meanwhile, the S7070 goes full-touch with Samsung's usual TouchWiz UI but adds special features like "Beauty Effect" to make shots snapped with the 3.2 megapixel camera "flawlessly beautiful." Interestingly, Samsung says that it'll be re-upping the Diva Collection every year with new phones aimed squarely at girly buyers, but don't rush down to the shady wireless shop yet -- these first Divas won't be hitting until January when they launch in Russia, Ukraine, the Netherlands, and other parts of Europe with Asian availability coming at a later date.

New device for home-use analyzes sleep disorder patterns

Measuring and monitoring brain waves to analyze why people have problems with sleeping isn't an easy task. Normally, patients need to be examined in special laboratories and wear head sets with up to eight electrodes over a certain period of time. But now Osaka-based Siix Corporation and the Osaka Bioscience Institute Foundation have developed a simple device that makes it possible to measure and monitor sleep-related brain waves in the comfort of your own home.

Five stars: Wrestling Observer Newsletter/Figure 4 Weekly now has an iPhone App

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of mixed martial arts, also “known” as UFC. It's less well-known that, back in my youth, I was a very big pro wrestling fan. (Pro wrestling today is largely unwatchable.) When I was 15 I subscribed to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, written by the hardest-working journalist in America, Dave Meltzer (the man doesn't sleep), a weekly news and analysis publication that detailed, to an incredible degree, the goings-on of the two businesses, pro wrestling and MMA. A little more than a year ago the newsletter entered the online age (while merging with another, similar publication in Figure 4 Weekly, written by Bryan Alvarez), with newsletters being made available online (in addition to the dead trees version). Today the publication enters the next exciting age, the iPhone age. That's right: there's now a Wrestling Observer Newsletter/Figure 4 Weekly iPhone App~!

  • Workaround for HTC Hero battery life issues discovered

Workaround for HTC Hero battery life issues discovered

Well, there still isn't a fix for the problem some people seem to be having with receiving text messages on their HTC Hero, but it looks like a workaround has been discovered for another pesky issue that can put a strain on the phone's battery life. Apparently, the phone has a bit of trouble going back into sleep mode after you send a text, or after you simply turn on the phone and immediately disable the screen without any activity. While some fairly elaborate fixes were tried by some users initially, it looks like the simplest actually works the best: just don't use the default SMS app to send texts. Instead, you can use a third-party app like ChompSMS or HandCent, which apparently have no problems letting the phone go back to sleep after you send a text. Of course, an official fix would still be the best but, in the meantime, you can hit up the link below for all the necessary details on making the (hopefully temporary) switch.

    [Thanks, Sean]

French health agency: Try to limit your exposure to mobile phones if only because we don’t have enough data to say otherwise

A group of researchers in France just recommended that we all limit our exposure to wireless devices, including mobile phones, Wi-Fi, and microwaves, because we really don't understand how prolonged exposure to them can affect us. That's particularly true with mobile phones, since they've really only been around for, what, 10 years? (Obviously there were available for longer than that, but Joe Public didn't buy his first phone till a little bit later.) You can't categorically say, based on 10 years of sometimes spotty data, that “phones are bad!” or “phones are good!” We simply don't know.
