Walmart’s $30 deal vaults Pixi from ‘meh’ to ’sure, I’ll take three’
Posted on November 12, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Palm, Sprint, EV-DO, CDMA, webOS
At $100, the underpowered Pixi doesn't look like a great value against its bigger, older brother -- but at the $30 Walmart is charging through its partner LetsTalk, the game changes a bit, doesn't it? Sure, $70 isn't that huge of a difference quantitatively, but emotionally, $30 is basically an overpriced meal or two -- and considering the old adage of "a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips," wouldn't you just rather have webOS? We've heard of some bad experiences with LetsTalk rebates in the past, but in this case, it's just an instant discount, so it seems like it could be a no-brainer for on-the-fencers.

ST-Ericsson’s U8500 platform gives your next smartphone wicked 3D powers
Posted on November 4, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Games, Multimedia
It's one thing for ARM to develop a potent GPU meant to add impressive 3D capabilities to devices that were previously forced to run the likes of "Snake," but it's another thing entirely to see a platform and semiconductor company come forward and take it one step closer to the mainstream. ST-Ericsson has done just that with its U8500 platform, which is the first to integrate ARM's Mali-400 graphics processing unit into a solution that can be easily fitted into future phones. Think your iPhone 3GS GPU is mighty enough? Hop on past the break and mash play -- it'll make those fancy water reflections you're currently drooling over look downright ugly.

Video: Israel’s One-Eyed Robotic Combat Snake
Posted on June 17, 2009 | No CommentsThe Israelis are working on this rather creepy robot snake, a reconnaissance device which fitfully flips and flaps across almost any terrain and captures some rather clear video along the way thanks to the big camera embedded in its head. So creepy is it that it seems to have startled the BBC reporter into this [...]
