Posted on June 22, 2010 | No Comments
As handfuls of iPhone 4s begin to slip through the cracks and into the grabby hands of hungry phone fans everywhere, the first batches of unboxing pictures are starting to go live as we type this. (You mean these people aren't waiting to open up their phones with the rest of us chumps on Thursday mornings? Jerks! You guys probably peeked at your Christmas presents as a kid, too. [Just kidding, of course -- tear those things apart.])
We're keeping an eye out for galleries as they go up; if you're amongst the many hundreds of thousands waiting on the edge of the seat, join as after the jump for these last minute teases.

Judge: Nintendo did not infringe on Wii Classic Controller, Wiimote
Posted on April 14, 2010 | No Comments
A company called Anascape, Ltd. sued Nintendo in 2008 for infringing on their patent for a controller similar to the Classic and Wiimote controllers. The Texas-based patent trolls won $21 million from Nintendo for their troubles thanks to a number of experts who attested that yes, the Anascape patents are pretty overarching and could feasibly apply to any controller ever made.

Official WinMo 6.5 upgrade for HTC Ozone leaked
Posted on December 31, 2009 | No Comments
Upgrading a Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard device to 6.5 is like putting a fresh coat of paint on your rusted-out '78 Duster, but in the scheme of things, a 6.5 upgrade is still far, far better than a punch in the face. On that note, we're excited to hear that an official update is in the works for Verizon's Ozone from HTC, the CDMA remix of the Snap that launched with 6.1 mere months before 6.5 became widely available. Actually, it's more than "in the works" -- it's available right this very second, just not through any official channels. As usual, it's xda-developers coming through with a copy of the update, so apply it at your own risk; in reality, 6.5 brings very little to the table for Standard handsets, so you shouldn't feel too bad if you wuss out and wait for Verizon to give you the blessed version. Just don't be surprised if you end up waiting half a year for it.Official WinMo 6.5 upgrade for HTC Ozone leaked originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 31 Dec 2009 22:18:00 EST. Rejoice! BlackBerry support arrives on Celio REDFLY
Posted on November 3, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Peripherals, RIM, BlackBerry OS
We heard it'd be here in mid-Q4, and sure enough, it's here. And by "it," we mean "BlackBerry support for Celio's largely unwanted REDFLY Mobile Companion." Starting today, those looking for the Foleo's long lost cousin can snap up a REDFLY and download a free driver that adds compatibility for RIM's BlackBerry Bold 9000, Curve 8900 and Tour 9630. Granted, it's not like the BlackBerry web browser will be any less painful to use on an enlarged screen, but hey, whatever suits your fancy.

Take this new entrant, due out in Australia next month. It’s called Baby and Me and features, you guessed it, an actual doll with a snap-in port for a Wii controller.

LG GD900 Crystal makes a very portable fish tank, PETA magnet
Posted on October 17, 2009 | No CommentsRemember the good old days with your virtual pets on your keyring? Well, how about an injection of life that actually roams around inside your phone? Some dude in China had this exact idea -- probably inspired by the waterproof LG GD900 Crystal in a fish tank -- and popped open the hollow keypad of his own Crystal, slapped in two unfortunate little neon tetras, squeezed in some water and snap! There's no mention on how long the poor things can survive in there for, but chances are PETA will be after your backside well before something goes wrong. We also went through the warranty paperwork, and honestly, we think this gentleman might be in a fishy area here. Video of the mod after the break, if you dare.

HTC Touch Pro2 and Snap among first official WinMo 6.5 updates
Posted on October 13, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Software, HTC, Windows Mobile
HTC promised way back at Mobile World Congress in February that the Touch Pro2 would be fully upgradeable to Windows Mobile 6.5 when the binaries went gold, and... well, here we are. Sure enough, they're making good on the promise by rolling out official updates for both the Touch Pro2 and the Snap so far, though this is one of those situations where availability for your particular version of the phone is going to depend on carrier branding, locking, and the phase of the moon, among other things -- so if the updates don't work for you, you can wait for your carrier to get in gear or, you know, try your luck over with the always-helpful xda-developers to roll your own update.

Did you know that your iPhone is also a document scanner?
Posted on August 3, 2009 | No CommentsOh, look, a legitimately clever use of the iPhone, and one that's not hard at all to replicate at home. Essentially, you set your iPhone on a raised surface, then you snap away using the phone's camera. Congratulations, you've just created an inexpensive document scanner.
