Orange Power Wellies convert all that dancin’ to juice for your mobile
Posted on June 7, 2010 | No Comments
We're coming upon festival season again, and you know what that means -- Orange is dragging their solar energy tent to Glastonbury. This year, prepare to charge your mobile phone while checking out the acts at the John Peel Stage, courtesy of your new Power Wellies. Developed in partnership with GotWind, the soles of the boots collect heat all day and, using something called the Seebeck effect, this heat is converted into electricity -- electricity that can be used to recharge your phone later that night. As if you needed an excuse to dance in the first place! PR after the break.

New solar cells printed on paper
Posted on May 5, 2010 | No Comments
Everyone loves the idea of solar energy. The three big challenges are that solar cells are expensive to produce, they're not very efficient, and you need some means to store the energy collected. I'd heard of solar shingles before, which are basically roofing shingles with solar cells in them, but now word is coming out of solar cells printed on paper. As usual, the technology is still years away from a marketable product, but it's an interesting development.

Sharp to bring solar-powered cell phone to China (and possibly elsewhere, too)
Posted on January 27, 2010 | No Comments
Sharp, the biggest (in terms of market share) of all eight major Japanese cell phone makers, has been talking about internationalizing its phone business for quite some time now. It makes sense, as the domestic market is shrinking and as Sharp only sold 20% of all their cell phones outside Japan (1.6 million units) last fiscal.

Sharp develops efficient solar cells for use in outer space
Posted on December 23, 2009 | No Comments
Earlier this year, we reported twice about Japan's serious plans to go to outer space to generate solar energy and then beam it back to Mother Earth. And today, Sharp has shown the first solar cell that's not only bendable (we've seen that before) but that also withstands conditions in space. In addition, the company says those cells boast a record-high solar efficiency of 36%.

Double Review: SolarVoice 908 and SolarCharger 906
Posted on November 30, 2009 | No Comments
My first experience with solar energy was in Cub Scouts, when we made a solar-powered hot dog cooker. Unfortunately, solar technology hasn't advanced terribly much in the intervening decades. At the consumer level, solar power still isn't particularly useful for very much outside of a few niche markets. i.Tech has a couple of products that make a real effort to bring usefulness to solar power for the average user: the SolarVoice 908 Bluetooth headset and the SolarCharger 906 multi-device charger.

Japan to operate solar energy station in outer space
Posted on November 13, 2009 | No Comments
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has big plans: It wants to conquer outer space to generate solar energy by 2030. The idea is to collect solar power in space and beam it down to earth, in the form of lasers or microwaves. The so-called Space Solar Power System project is led by big corporations such as Mitsubishi, NEC, Fujitsu und Sharp.

Photo dialing, solar cellphones, and newspapers on TV: only in Japan
Posted on October 6, 2009 | No Comments
Sharp has on display a number of fun new gadgets at CEATEC. As is all too often the case, these things are for Japanese release only (at least for now). Maybe we'll see them in a couple years. Read on for details on a dial-by-photo phone, newspapers on TV, solar-charging cell phones, and the Sharp Netwalker!

Japanese company sells carports with solar panel roofs
Posted on September 16, 2009 | No CommentsSolar energy is being used in a number of applications already, but carports are something new. Japan-based Sankyo Tateyama Aluminium has begun selling carports [JP] with solar power generation systems installed on their tops. The main idea is to attract both customers who aren't able to install solar panels in their homes and those who need to boost the amount of solar energy in their houses.

Japan wants 32,000 schools to go solar by 2020
Posted on July 13, 2009 | No CommentsSolar energy remains a hot topic (no pun intended) in Japan. As part of a huge economic stimulus plan, the government plans to convert all of the country's 32,000 public elementary and middle schools to solar power by 2020. The aim: reduction of CO2 emissions and cutting long-term energy costs.
