LG leaks in Brazil include Android-powered C710, cute T310

Brazil's CelularCafe looks to have scored a four-pack of fresh leaks out of LG, most notably a new Android handset being called the C710 that looks suspiciously like Verizon's Ally but apparently lacks a QWERTY keyboard, steps up to a 5 megapixel cam, and includes 802.11n WiFi, a new spec sheet line item that's been picking up steam with higher-end smartphones as of late. Next, there's the T300, a low-end full touchscreen device with a 2 megapixel cam that the site has taken to calling the Cookie Light; next to it lies the slightly-spiffier T310 (pictured) with a larger display and irresistibly cute styling. Finally, there's a forgettable A130 clamshell with EDGE data and an FM radio with recording capability -- needless to say, not the most exciting of the bunch. No word on when, or where, we might see any of these for sale.

    [Thanks, Daniel P.]

  • Nokia X5 square slider gets official in Singapore (update: video!)

Nokia X5 square slider gets official in Singapore (update: video!)

Well, hey, Nokia just officially launched the X5 in Singapore, apparently as a followup to the Twist and the latest chubby square slider to hit in the past few months after the the Motorola Flipout and Kin One. No, we're not sure why this form factor is suddenly a Thing either. This guy is actually Nokia's second X5 --a China-only X5 with a totally different design was announced in April, so that's nice and confusing. We don't have an official spec sheet on this new X5 yet, but we're told it runs Symbian S60, and has a five megapixel camera, Facebook, MySpace and YouTube integration, as well as some sort of shake-based notification feature we don't really understand. It comes in black, hot pink, bright blue, and, um, unattractive yellow, and it's pretty thick, if the hands-on photos are to be believed. That's all we know for now -- hit the source links for a bunch more photos, and we'll let you know if we hear anything else.

    [Thanks, Gabriel]

  • Fujitsu, Toshiba in talks to merge mobile units

Fujitsu, Toshiba in talks to merge mobile units

The domestic Japanese phone market has been in a state of contraction for some time, most notably evidenced by Mitsubishi's decision to exit the game altogether and the Sanyo-Kyocera tie-up from a couple years back. Fujitsu and Toshiba are the next two giants looking to combine their resources in the mobile space, a move that would create Japan's number two phone manufacturing venture behind Sharp and reduce to six the total number of firms making handsets there (down from ten in 2007). Though technologically years ahead of the rest of the world, Japan also suffers from deeper market saturation than perhaps anywhere else -- and the opportunities for product differentiation are sharply reduced by carrier RFPs that emphasize conformity to a standard spec sheet. Fujitsu is said to likely hold the majority stake if the deal goes down, but for what it's worth, nothing's been finalized yet. If a deal improves the odds of bringing hardware to North America by even the smallest of fractions, we're all for it.

Motorola wants a 2GHz Android by year’s end, so do we

Looks like we didn't get the full dish from Sanjay Jha's bout of loquaciousness this morning. It turns out Moto's chief of handsets has also expressed his company's intention to bring the world its first 2GHz smartphone and to do so on an aggressively accelerated roadmap. By the end of the year, Sanjay? Yes please. Another Moto exec is cited as saying NVIDIA Tegra will be providing the graphics prowess, Flash 10.1 will be fully supported, and a gyroscope will accompany HD video recording and output on the dreamy spec sheet. We wouldn't invest all of our trust in the conveniently anonymous exec's promised specs, but that 2GHz number comes straight from the top -- let the countdown begin.

Motorola officially announces its weirdo square phone, the Flipout

Motorola love trying out new form factors almost as much as they love SHOUTING, and today's announcement combines both those past times. While we spotted the square phone last month, it's always good to have something officially confirmed. So, without further ado, I present to you the FLIPOUT (also the last time I write it in all caps).

LG Optimus Q launching with Android 1.6? (update: yep!)

You'd like to think that any Android device launching these days would come equipped with an absolute bare minimum of Eclair, but that's not the case; Dell's Streak, for example, will be coming out of the gate with Android 1.6 -- and seemingly so will LG's LU2300 Optimus Q. We were just handed this rather interesting spec sheet that says the phone's loaded with 1.6 on no uncertain terms, a stark change from LG's official (and someone unhelpful) line that it may or may not launch with 2.1. At the very least, we'd hope that an upgrade is in the works -- but hey, at least it comes with LG's trick Air Sync service, which is a pretty sweet deal.

    [Thanks, Seth G.]

Update: LG's Korean-language press release from a few days ago matches up with the specs they're showing in South Korea right now (pictured), so it's confirmed -- 1.6 at launch, 2.1 later in the Summer. Thanks, Kunal G.!

LG’s $100 Ally crashing Verizon stores on May 20th, pre-orders start tomorrow (update: now with specs)

We had a hunch that LG's Android 2.1-based Ally would see its first customers on May 20th, and Verizon Wireless has finally opened up and confirmed as much this morning. The Iron Man 2-infused smartphone -- which we spent some time with yesterday -- will be available in all VZW stores beginning May 20th, with pre-orders going live for phone and web customers tomorrow. We've already given you the rundown when it comes to specs (they're after the break for those with memories shorter than their shoelaces), but now we're able to confirm that it'll sell for $99.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and a new two-year contract. A well-specced Android smartphone for under a Benjamin? Not bad, LG.

Update: Nothing in particular to write home about, but LG has just unveiled the Ally's nearly complete spec sheet. [Thanks, Rey E.]

Well, well, well -- lookie here. See that screenshot over there? (Click through for the embiggened version) That's allegedly a screen shot of the Verizon Nexus One spec sheet, right off of Verizon's Intranet Equipment Guide. Now, look a bit closer. About 10 bullet points down. See it? "Sense UI (User Interface)". For those not keeping track, Sense is HTC's user interface mod for Android. It started off primarily as a much-needed visual overhaul, then came to include features like Flash in the browser. It's a pretty great addition to Android - and it's one thing that the currently available T-Mobile Nexus One is lacking.
