Sprint’s WiMAX service teases EVO 4G-toting New Yorkers (update: LA and SF, too)
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsWe'd figured that Sprint and partner Clearwire were going to have a devil of a time rolling out WiMAX this year in New York City; urban canyons are always tricky, of course, but their oddball 2500MHz spectrum allocation isn't the best at penetrating buildings and other structures, either. On that note, we'd been tipped earlier this week that a reader was seeing some weak WiMAX reception for the first time on his EVO 4G near Coney Island (see a shot after the break), and now, we've been able to independently confirm it on one of our own units -- in saturated Midtown, no less -- though we weren't able to do much with it beyond get a notification that a "4G network is available." Clearly this isn't ready for primetime use, but it's a good sign that these guys have officially started lighting up a few cells here and there. 1080p streaming, anyone?
[Thanks, r0ckstar_23]
Update: We're getting tipped that folks are seeing some occasional 4G action in LA and San Francisco, so keep a close eye on those EVOs!Continue reading Sprint's WiMAX service teases EVO 4G-toting New Yorkers (update: LA and SF, too)

T-Mobile Rolls Out “4G Speed” Network In 15+ New Cities
Posted on June 15, 2010 | No Comments4G is in the air! Or, at least for T-Mobile, 4G speeds are in the air. While T-Mobile isn’t technically allowed to pitch their HSPA+ network as 4G, its speeds can exceed that of the networks that some carriers (read: Sprint) have been toting as 4G for the last few months. This morning, T-Mobile is [...] -
HTC EVO 4G fully rooted, freedom loving people everywhere rejoice
Posted on June 14, 2010 | No CommentsYou've undoubtedly been following the story -- hell, maybe you've even partaking in some serious WiFi tethering. Well, the Android Police (not an actual police force) are reporting that the EVO 4G has finally been rooted, fully and completely. What's this mean? Well, for starters, enterprising individuals will soon be writing to /system from within the OS, removing Sprint's apps and flashing from custom ROMs. Pretty sweet, right? Hit up the source link to get started! But please, don't brick your phone. For real.HTC EVO 4G fully rooted, freedom loving people everywhere rejoice originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 14 Jun 2010 19:46:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Sprint to begin throttling data this summer? (update: not exactly)
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No CommentsYou know the fine print of your EVO 4G contract that gives Sprint the right to limit throughput speeds without notice? Skipped past that part? Well, consider this your unofficial notice. If what we're reading above is accurate, then Sprint appears ready to introduce data throttling this summer. Where and how are the big questions. The image above received from a tipster appears to have been grabbed from Sprint's own "The Playbook," though we have no way of confirming that at this time. It certainly make sense though given T-Mobile USA's recent move away from overage charges in favor of throttling.
Update: We're hearing from a couple sources that the shot here from The Playbook is a little out of context, and actually refers to a new feature for businesses looking to restrict disproportionately high usage by employees with company data cards. That sounds a little less painful, does it not? Thanks, everyone!Sprint to begin throttling data this summer? (update: not exactly) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 11 Jun 2010 14:29:00 EST. AT&T data down across the Southeast, Puerto Rico? (update: should be back to normal)
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No Comments
This hasn't exactly been a banner week for wireless uptime; Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon have all seen some trouble over the course of the past few days, and now we're getting tipped that AT&T data services are down once again in the Southeast. Last time, the problems seemed limited to Florida, but now we're hearing that customers spanning from Atlanta to Louisiana are having trouble -- and even Puerto Rico has apparently been pulled into the mess. What's everyone seeing out there?
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: Everything should've been back online as of roughly midnight ET last night. Here's the statement we've received from AT&T:
"Due to an earlier equipment issue caused by a fiber cut, some customers in the Southeast region experienced issues with their 3G data service. AT&T technicians quickly worked to resolve the issue, and all service should be up and running. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers."

Video: HTC EVO 4G vs Razors, Pennys, and Screws
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No Comments
So, for one reason or another, you've gotta send your HTC EVO 4G in to Sprint for an exchange. What do you do?
A) Wrap the EVO in the finest cloth you can find, ushering it gently into its shipping crate, or
B) Attack its screen with razor blades, pennies, and screws and film the whole thing for the sake of science/entertainment.
You can probably guess where this is going. (Hint: We probably wouldn't write a post about it if you went with option A.)

HTC EVO 4G performance capped at 30fps
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No Comments
The super spec'ed HTC EVO 4G has been taking a bit of a beating lately -- what with its woeful battery performance and exaggerated sales claims -- but this latest report falls on the far side of peculiar.
Users over at XDA are reporting that the framerate of the device seems to be capped at 30fps in both 2D and 3D modes. I say "capped" because a device with these kinds of specs should be hitting much higher framerates.

Sprint: Yeah OK, We Didn’t Sell That Many HTC EVO 4G Phones
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No Comments
Remember when Sprint said the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on its launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined, last Monday?
Yeah, that didn't really happen.
The company now admits it had "inadvertently overstated" the launch day sales of the HTC phone, and that in reality it was in line with the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined. That makes a world of difference.

HTC EVO 4G sold out pretty much everywhere
Posted on June 8, 2010 | No CommentsIt's being widely reported that the HTC EVO 4G is sold out all over the US -- at brick and mortars and online. And while we can't 100 percent certain that Sprint doesn't have a few hidden away in some of the less traversed pockets of this great land, the fact that they're selling out shouldn't come as a huge shocker. The phone overtook the Palm Pre to become Sprint's best-selling launch day ever, though we don't have an actual number of units moved. Be sure to let us know in comments if your local store has any left -- we'll be sure to stampede over there.HTC EVO 4G sold out pretty much everywhere originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 08 Jun 2010 16:08:00 EST. Sprint EVO 4G sells out online, nation wide
Posted on June 8, 2010 | No CommentsSelling out of a new device in one or two real stores is one thing — they generally only have 20 or 30 handsets to begin with. But running out of stock for your online storefront? That’s an impressive feat. With that said: If you were planning on running home from work today and ordering [...] -
By The Numbers: The iPhone 4 vs EVO 4G
Posted on June 7, 2010 | No Comments
The Android vs iPhone fight is officially on. The EVO 4G fired the first shot last Friday when it launched nationwide on Sprint. The Android nation rallied behind the 4G super phone, which finally gave them a reason to be proud of their mobile platform of choice. They loudly pointed out all the EVO 4G's iPhone-killing specs: huge 4.3-inch screen, 4G hotspot mode, dual cameras, and cheap mobile plans.
But the new iPhone is finally official after months of leaks and it's ready to fight although it's not exactly fair. The fourth generation iPhone isn't just going up against one phone. Nope, the EVO 4G is just Android's flavor of the month. A more powerful and sexy Android handset will likely steal its attention by the end of the summer and the iPhone 4 will have to stand against that model as well.
Here we are anyway, though. It's time to let the two hottest phones on the planet stand toe-to-toe on specs and capabilities. Forget the user experience and all that nonsense. This is about screen resolution, network access, megapixels and all the fun stuff that forum users will be spouting off about for months.
