The Archos 9 PC Tablet makes room for the Atom Z515 CPU

Isn't it grand when companies somewhat silently update their products with new hardware but keeps the previous price. That's just what Archos did with the 9 PC Tablet. Overnight it went from the Intel Atom Z510 1.1GHz CPU to the Z515 1.2GHz Atom with Hyper-Threading and Intel Burst Performance Technology. It's a nice little spec bump, actually.

  • Review: Nokia Booklet 3G

    Review: Nokia Booklet 3G

Short Version: When Nokia first announced their Netbook 3G, expectations were mixed. After all, Nokia defined the mobile phone space but they’ve hardly been good at expanding out of the handset market. My take? This is a bit too underpowered and a bit too generic to be a truly great Nokia product but, given the [...]

  • Crazy like a fox? Microsoft to release an ad-supported, introductory version of Office 2010

Crazy like a fox? Microsoft to release an ad-supported, introductory version of Office 2010

Years ago, when Microsoft started pushing Internet Explorer, it enjoyed favorable adoption rates because, well, it's already on there, so why not use it? (Law-breaking aside, of course!)That may be what Microsoft is thinking this time around with Office 2010. Redmond will allow OEMs to install Office Starter 2010 on brand new Windows 7 PCs. It will be a pared down version of Office, and one that will be ad-supported. That, of course, has caused the Internet to freak out.

  • Netbook makers will be able to use any Windows 7 version without restrictions

Netbook makers will be able to use any Windows 7 version without restrictions

Good then. Netbook manufacturers will be able to preload any version of Windows 7 onto their machines – not just Windows 7 Starter Edition. And while we found out in May that the arbitrary three-application limit had been removed from Windows 7 Starter (thereby making it virtually indistinguishable from Windows 7 Home Basic), the lack of other features like not being able to change your desktop wallpaper or use some of the cooler Aero stuff felt more than a bit underwhelming.

Microsoft confirms: no three app limit in Windows 7 Starter

We'd heard it through the grapevine that Microsoft was gearing up to right the wrong and nix that ludicrous three application limit for Windows 7 Starter Edition, and sure enough, it did just that via The Windows Blog. The company admitted that it was removing the three application at-a-time limit previously slated for inclusion in Win7 Starter "based on the feedback it has received from partners and customers." (Psst... thanks for yelling, people!) That said, the OS is still severely gimped, with no multi-monitor support, DVD playback, Windows Media Center, remote media streaming, XP Mode or network connectivity. Just kidding on that last one... we think.
