LG leaks in Brazil include Android-powered C710, cute T310

Brazil's CelularCafe looks to have scored a four-pack of fresh leaks out of LG, most notably a new Android handset being called the C710 that looks suspiciously like Verizon's Ally but apparently lacks a QWERTY keyboard, steps up to a 5 megapixel cam, and includes 802.11n WiFi, a new spec sheet line item that's been picking up steam with higher-end smartphones as of late. Next, there's the T300, a low-end full touchscreen device with a 2 megapixel cam that the site has taken to calling the Cookie Light; next to it lies the slightly-spiffier T310 (pictured) with a larger display and irresistibly cute styling. Finally, there's a forgettable A130 clamshell with EDGE data and an FM radio with recording capability -- needless to say, not the most exciting of the bunch. No word on when, or where, we might see any of these for sale.

    [Thanks, Daniel P.]

  • Android 2.1 picks up steam in latest platform stats, 1.5 and 1.6 still contenders

Android 2.1 picks up steam in latest platform stats, 1.5 and 1.6 still contenders

We're delighted to see that Android has built yet more momentum behind Eclair since its last platform version distribution report two weeks ago, moving the mark from 45.1 to an even 50 percent of all devices in the field (that doesn't include 2.0 or 2.0.1, which have been swiftly banished from relevance now that all 2.0 devices have received 2.1 updates). Unfortunately, Cupcake and Donut -- versions 1.5 and 1.6, respectively -- simply refuse to die, together accounting for basically all of the remaining half. That's down a little under 5 percent from the beginning of June, though, so at least we're moving in the right direction -- and a couple well-placed OTAs from HTC, Motorola, and Samsung would obliterate most of the remainder, we figure. Version fragmentation is an enemy of this platform, regardless of what Google says -- so let's just fast-track a bunch of Froyo ROMs and put all this talk behind us, alright?

    [Thanks, Drew]

  • Latest Android stats show pre-2.1 versions still reign supreme

Latest Android stats show pre-2.1 versions still reign supreme

Fragmentation's a red herring, eh, Google? We'd suggest you look at your own stats, where -- as of yesterday, anyway -- fragmentation was alive and well, no matter how you define it. In the two-week period of Google's data collection ending June 1, some 54.5 percent of devices in the field were still using pre-Eclair versions of Android, a pretty sorry stat considering that it was released back in late 2009 and xda-developers members have proven countless times that every Android phone ever made can run 2.0 and above with aplomb. To be fair, 2.1 picked up significant steam since the last roundup and the trailing devices aren't entirely Google's fault -- manufacturers and carriers need to take most of the blame for the delays in getting upgrades pushed out -- but it's Google's wild development pace that has left this trail of premature obsolescence in its wake. Upgrades are good, but necessitating that your development community has its eyeballs on at least four versions of your platform (1.5, 1.6, 2.1, and 2.2) is generally bad.

  • TV viewers now refusing to watch SD content?

TV viewers now refusing to watch SD content?

There's a handy option in the DirecTV menu guide for "HDTV Channels." On the rare occasion when I'm actually sitting in front of the TV looking to "channel surf" (more like "menu surf" nowadays), it's only "HDTV channels" I'm concerned with. Nearly halfway through 2010, it has come to the point where, unless I absolutely have no other choice, I simply won't watch a network unless the program is in HD. Has it come really come to that? That, unless a show is in HD, you'll simply skip it?

Got an e-mail from the good folks at Steam a few moments ago detailing a new feature y'all might be interested in. I mean, the only thing anyone is going to care about today is Google TV, but I'll do what I can to distract you from that for a moment. The deal is that Prima Guides are now available for use in-game. You know, via that shift+tab overlay thing.

Besides, I suspect real geek girls would definitely squeeeeeee at these. All of these handmade pieces are created out of used electronics and are actually quite striking. The best [...]

Irony: Did Rockstar upload a pirated version of Max Payne 2 to Steam?

Well this is interesting. A person far cleverer than any of us here decided, on a whim, to look at the main executable of the Steam version of Max Payne 2 in a text editor. Because that's what you do, you know? Anyhow, a funny little thing appears: the ASCII logo of famed release group (now defunct) Myth. In other words, it sure does look like Rockstar uploaded a cracked (PIRATED OMG OMG OMG) version of the game to Steam's servers! You can't make this stuff up.
