Hitachi Maxell develops magnetic tape cartridge with 50TB capacity
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No Comments
Just in January this year, we reported about a very special magnetic tape that was developed by Fujifilm and IBM and that stores a whopping 35TB of data. But yesterday Hitachi Maxell has announced that its new high-capacity magnetic tape even offers 50TB. No wonder Maxell and and its partner in the development of the tape, the Tokyo Institute of Technology, are speaking of a "world record".

ATP SSD connect to the USB header on your motherboad
Posted on April 23, 2010 | No Comments
This is brilliant. I'm not 100% sure what the practical application is yet, but I think I want one. ATP built an SLC NAND-based solid state drive designed to plug directly into the USB header on your motherboard. Great idea right?

WeaKnees now selling a 2TB and 4TB TiVo Premiere
Posted on April 14, 2010 | No Comments
Just in case the 1TB drive in the TiVo Premiere isn't big enough for you, WeaKnees is now selling two upgraded models with a bit more storage capacity. The TiVo authorized reseller has a 2TB and 4TB Premiere available for $849 and $149, respectively. That's a lot of recording storage, boys and girls, and currently the only way to get a larger drive in the Premiere.

Western Digital is now shipping the Scorpio Blue 750GB 2.5-inch hard drive directly to our hearts
Posted on March 30, 2010 | No Comments
Western Digital here,
While other companies are just announcing their large 2.5-inch drives, we've started shipping ours and wanted to thank everyone involved with the industry-leading Scorpio Blue 750GB 2.5-inch hard drive: the engineers for crafting the drive, the bean counters for pricing it well at $149, but most importantly, you, the consumer. It was you that pushed us to stuff even more storage capacity in the small 2.5-inch form factor and demanded a quiet and battery-efficient drive. Thank you.

Toshiba Canvio portable hard drives
Posted on March 29, 2010 | No Comments
According to research sponsored by Toshiba, more Americans are afraid of losing digital data -- photos, documents, etc -- than they are about losing their wallet or an audit by the IRS. This is probably because more people have suffered a digital loss than have been audited by the IRS -- we all say "It can't happen to me!" until it actually does happen, and only then do we change our behaviors. But the reality is, backing up data has historically been tedious, if not actually challenging. And restores are so rarely done as to require the user to search for the long discarded product manual so they can figure out how to do it...

Active releases a new set of SSDs
Posted on March 8, 2010 | No Comments
Solid state hard drives are increasing in popularity mainly because more are reaching the consumer market, therefore driving down prices. But most are still a bit pricey. Active has a new 1.8-inch set, however, that's a bit more affordable if you don't mind forgoing storage capacity.

How TiVo missed the mark with the new Premiere
Posted on March 3, 2010 | No CommentsExcuse me while I let off a little steam. I was a tad hasty in my proclamation yesterday that the TiVo Premiere changes everything. It doesn’t. In fact, it doesn’t change anything. It’s a big pile of disappointment and missed opportunity. TiVo doesn’t release hardware that often so when it does, it better be good. Tivos have a ridiculously [...] -
The TiVo Premier is finally official
Posted on March 2, 2010 | No CommentsFinally. We finally have new TiVo models. The TiVo HD XL launched a long year and half ago and the UI is even older. But that’s behind us now, the TiVo Premier is here and it’s (nearly) everything we need in a DVR. Everything is different: the hardware, the interface, even the remote. (QWERTY!) With the [...] -
Bag Week: Sumo Messenger Bag
Posted on December 16, 2009 | No CommentsShort Version: Sumo is fairly new to the bag game but this is a strong showing for the company. For $79.99 you get a 17-inch laptop bag made of waterproof ballistic, rip-stop nylon. Sadly, a lack of internal organization pockets hampers the overall storage capacity. Info: * Sumo * Messenger [...]
