  • If Nintendo ‘won’ E3 then where does that leave Apple?

If Nintendo ‘won’ E3 then where does that leave Apple?

There were two big pieces of news at E3 last week: the ceaseless march toward 3D gaming and the unrelenting encroachment of motion control upon our lives. I honestly couldn't give a toss about 3D gaming because if I wanted 3D entertainment I'd talk to a human being. Same thing with motion control: it doesn't bother me because I want nothing to do with it (outside of dancing the Macarena when asked to “freestyle”). It'd be like getting angry because it's hot on Venus: what? Exactly. One thing I did notice: what happened to all of that hubbub about “Apple being the new Nintendo”?

Disembodied voice asks: Who will be the ultimate gamer (on season 2 of ‘WCG Ultimate Gamer’)?

The most shocking thing about the news that there will be a second season of "WCG Ultimate Gamer" on SyFy is that there was ever a first season. Could have fooled me. But alas, it has been picked up for another year. This calls for a celebration of some sort. Wee!

Don’t like being on camera? Then don’t go to New York City!

Officials in New York have started laying the groundwork for a gigantic influx of surveillance cameras in Manhattan. This is in response, of course, to the weekend's attempted car bomb attack in Times Square. (Incidentally, I had walked through Times Square the Sunday morning after the situation trying to find Super Street Fighter IV and was shocked at all the cops walking around. I though they were filming a movie or something because I had no idea anything had happened the night before.) So if you're not cool with being on camera all day long, you had better not visit Manhattan.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 comin’ at ya Spring 2011

There's a couple things going on today. One, of course, it's some sort of smokers' holiday—they're celebrating on Ron and Fez on Sirius XM right now and I'm giggling like a fool. Two, Barcelona plays Inter in the Champions League. And, last but not least, Capcom officially revealed Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Raise your hand if you wasted a number of hours trying to pull off 100-hit combos in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for the DreamCast!

PAX East 2010: The oddest Street Fighter battle you’e ever seen

You'll find no one here who's not down for a round or two (or 10) of Street Fighter. No one! In fact, I'm half-convinced that that's Greg under that helmet.

First screenshots of Sonic The Hedgehog 4 reminds us of our youth

Oh, look! The first screenshots of Sonic The Hedgehog 4! I do believe Sonic now hold the record for longest wait between the third and fourth game in a series, beating Street Fighter IV. That's my gut feeling, but that has proven wildly inaccurate in the past.

Switzerland approaches complete ban on violent video games

That's funny, not one hour ago I mentioned that Australia had embraced the idea that adults have the capacity to make decisions vis-à-vis buying violent video games. Good ol' Switzerland, though, the darling of Europe, has passed a law essentially outlawing violent video games. I'd feign, well, not anger, but something, but it's Switzerland: how can you get mad at those guys?

You probably ought to download Donkey Kong Country 2: Serious Monkey Business

An outstanding e-mail showed up in my inbox a few moments ago promoting the release of Donkey Kong Country 2: Serious Monkey Business. It's a remix album from OC ReMix, the people who are famous for, you know, remixing video game soundtracks. (I used one of their Street Fighter remixes in a video review about a year ago.) But, yeah, Serious Monkey Business!

$9.99: Street Fighter IV for iPhone hits the App Store

We've spent three posts covering Street Fighter IV for the iPhone so far, and this fourth one is intended to inform you Capcom's latest game has finally arrived in the App Store (I checked the US, German and Japanese store). Capcom itself isn't listing the app [iTunes link] on their official "Capcom Mobile" site yet, but it is already being offered for $9.99.

Final Fantasy I and II for iPhone get release dates

Since we’ve spent two posts covering Street Fighter IV, a game that will presumably be terrible to play on the iPhone, I thought it was only fair to give a bit more love to a game that should be awesome on the iPhone. Actually, two games: Final Fantasy I and II. We knew they were coming [...]

Wherein we talk about Tekken 6

It’s unusual playing Tekken on anything but a Sony system. (I’m not counting Tekken Advance for the GameBoy Advance, and neither should you.) And yet here I am with Tekken 6 on the Xbox 360, using the same combos, with the same characters (that would be Bryan Fury and Law, if you’ll allow me to [...]

  • Can we blame Nintendo’s profit drop on the lack of gamer’s games?

Can we blame Nintendo’s profit drop on the lack of gamer’s games?

It hasn't been the best couple of months for Nintendo. Profits were down for the six months leading up to September, which the company blames on the strong yen and the Wii's price cut. Net sales, too, were down, some 34.5 percent. Fair enough, and those reasons are likely to explain Nintendo's situation, but is there something else going on? I know Pat Buchanan, the older gentlemen that he is, always uses the phrase “the chickens have come home to roost,” and I think it's applicable here. Perhaps Nintendo's strategy of selling the Wii to the “casual” crowd (housewives and the like, to simplify this) has finally run out of gas?

Will Project Natal be anything more than a glorified tech demo? Here’s hoping!

Maybe I'm speaking for the minority here, but I have to get this off my chest: Project Natal is sorta “meh,” no? I attended Popular Mechanics' Breakthrough Awards for a few minutes last night, and they had on display Project Natal. It was that paint-throwing game. Now, I know that's just a tech demo, but I left feeling a little concerned about its future.

No, you can’t use the DJ Hero turntable on any other game

Bad news, sports fans. Well, to be specific, DJ Hero fans. Anyhow, it looks like you won't be able to use the turntable controller on any other video game. Why you'd want to use the turntable when playing, say, Street Fighter IV, I don't know.
