T-Mobile Sidekick Disaster: Danger’s Servers Crashed, And They Don’t Have A Backup

Wow. T-Mobile and Danger, the Microsoft-owned subsidiary that makes the Sidekick, has just announced that they've likely lost all user data that was being stored on Microsoft's servers due to a server failure. That means that any contacts, photos, calendars, or to-do lists that haven't been locally backed up are gone. Apparently if you don't turn off your Sidekick and make sure its battery doesn't run out you can salvage what's currently stored on the device, otherwise you're out of luck: Microsoft/Danger is describing the likelihood of recovering the data from their servers as "extremely low". T-Mobile Sidekick users have been suffering from a major outage all week, and that issue apparently hasn't been resolved either.

SKY Dupont is the most expensive Pantech ever made

What exactly does the equivalent of roughly $830 buy you in Pantech's home market these days? Well, it'll apparently get you signed up for the priciest device South Korea's third-largest handset manufacturer has ever made, the Dupont from subsidiary SKY. As far as we can tell, this thing is more show than go, thanks largely to a weakling 3-inch WQVGA display and 3 megapixel camera -- but then again, it's hard to argue with designer tie-ins and questionably tasteful gold accents, isn't it? Look for this one on local carrier SKT, and for once, we're totally fine with the fact that Pantech is concentrating on low-end messaging devices over on AT&T.

    T-Mo T-oBuy O-Range I-n U-K

robot-love Rumor has it that T-Mobile UK and Orange UK will merge, creating a 28.4 million customer uber-carrier. The next largest carrier will be Telefonica's O2, the former heavyweight. The deal will be signed by November and the merged company will share networks and CRM services in the UK. This does not directly effect T-Mobile's German parent company except in that it will lose its subsidiary in the UK.

Very cool RC toy: “Mission Carrier SWAT truck” with helicopter (video)

Just yesterday we featured Bandai's cool remote-controlled heli-robot Sky Armor, and now the same company (its subsidiary CCP, to be exact) announced the Mission Carrier SWAT [JP], a combination of a truck and helicopter. And this toy is even better than Sky Armor. The cool thing about the SWAT truck is the sound and the elevating deck: Push a button on the remote to make the panels in the back of the truck open and reveal the mini helicopter inside of it. The helicopter can then be controlled just like every other RC helicopter (for 5 minutes after a 30 minute charge). Needless to say, you can also let the truck itself drive around.

  • NTT Docomo Buys 35 Percent Of PacketVideo For $45.5 Million

NTT Docomo Buys 35 Percent Of PacketVideo For $45.5 Million

Mobile video is taking off in Japan, where mobile operator NTT DoCoMo just invested $45.5 million in PacketVideo, which s a long-time supplier of mobile video software. The all-cash investment gives NTT Docomo a 35 percent stake in PacketVideo, which is s subsidiary of NextWave Wireless (a holding company that owns rights to wireless spectrum in the U.S. which it plans to use for a Wimax network). NextWave acquired PacketVideo in 2005 and the company is now its main source of cash. The investment indicates how important PacketVideo's technology is to NTT Docomo, and raises the possibility of an outright purchase down the line. Other customers of PacketVideo include Verizon Wireless, Orange (in France), and T-Mobile. They might not feel so warm and fuzzy about PacketVideo now being so closely aligned with another carrier, even if it is in Japan.
