You’re playing a lot of mobile games on the subway, aren’t you?

You're on the subway on the way to work. It's not a long trip, maybe 15 to 20 minutes long if you're coming in from an outer borough. You have to kill the time somehow lest you be alone in your thoughts for a few moments. What do you do? If we're to believe a new survey, then you' may well whip out your phone to play a video game. Back in the day, people would have had a paperback or magazine handy. Times, they are a....

  • Apple is now Nintendo’s biggest problem

Apple is now Nintendo’s biggest problem

The last time Nintendo took a big hit in profit, it resulted in the development of perhaps the most successful video game console of all time in the Wii. What's Nintendo's response going to be this time around? Yes, the big N has seen its profits drop from $3.03 billion to $2.48 billion—still a fair a bit of money perhaps to you and me, but cause for panic in the house that Mario built. While a traditional rival, Sony (with the PlayStation), was responsible for the previous rough patch, this time it's Apple. Will Nintendo allow the iPhone to push it around?

  • It’s time for the MLB to adopt instant replay

It’s time for the MLB to adopt instant replay

Look, I'd be lying if I said I followed baseball this season. I'm a Mets guy, and you just know that, once April hits, you're in for a reasonably OK season, but one that just looses steam as the months go by. So why bother? What I can say, though, is that, given all this evidence, it's about time that baseball adopt the instant replay. Correct calls outweigh everything else. We have the technology!

Portable media players will have a mandatory volume limiter in Europe soon

It's expected that the European Commission will pass legislation that will require manufacturers to include a noise limiter on portable media players. This is being done, of course, because listening to said devices at extraordinarily loud volume levels is quite dangerous; up to 10 percent of users are in danger totally destroying their hearing by keeping the players on too loud.

  • Did The Beatles just screw up by not going to iTunes?

Did The Beatles just screw up by not going to iTunes?

Did Apple swerve us, or are we just a bunch of nincompoops? (I vote for the latter.) So, so many people were expecting to see The Beatles finally show up to iTunes, if not the event itself, yesterday. Nearly 24 hours later, you're still unable to buy “Help!” from Steve Jobs' little store. Huge deal, or should we all just move on with our lives? And is the band making a mistake in ignoring the largest music store on Planet Earth?

The Samsung R1 is a PMP, all right

The “anybody but iPod” crowd has another portable media player to choose from, and it's from Samsung. It's called the R1, and it's your standard issue touchscreen PMP. It does play Divx-encoded video, which should be a benefit to those of you who haven't moved into Blu-ray rips, or who enjoy watching standard-def rips of TV shows on the subway.

ChromeOS spotted with dock and other blurry UI elements

A blurry snapshot of ChromeOS has surfaced showing a new, Mac-like dock and some battery and wireless notifiers in the bottom corner. This OS looks so stripped down compared to other OSes we’ve used that we’re loathe to call it anything more than a shell. However, we all love us some Google so let’s just [...]

    Review: Loopbags Vanguard 15-inch Backpack

If there is one thing I learned while testing this bag it was that there are better bags out there than a $60 Targus for sale at the airport electronic boutique. And so I’m pleased to introduce the Loopbag Vanguard 15-inch Backpack in brown. In my humble opinion this bag is immeasurably better than a heavy, [...]

    Review: Palm Pre

Now that everyone has had their say about the Palm Pre, I thought it wise to say a few words about the oft labeled “iPhone killer” that Sprint and Palm hope will bring each back from the edge of the dreaded deadpool. It seems as though every touch-screen device to launch since the first generation [...]

The iPhone 3G S has landed

Yes, the major media figure on the Internet has an iPhone 3G S. On initial examination, I'd safely say that this if you're planning on getting an iPhone with a new contract, go ahead. The price is right and the features are great. Everything on this phone is snappier - Maps especially - and the auto-focus and video uploads passed the wife test who said that this is what she's been looking for from the iPhone from the beginning. Looks like someone is going to have to upgrade someone.
