Nokia N8 running Symbian^3 is the suck

Sigh. Nokia may be selling phones like hotcakes to the developing world and my father-in-law in Poland, but they can’t make a popular phone to save their life. The new N8, leaked and reviewed on Electronista is little more than a rehash of Symbian circa 2000. Mobile-Review’s Eldar Murtazin goes so far as to jokingly [...]

Make your laptop power brick not suck

This ingenious little bugger plugs inline to your laptop power brick and turns it into a multiple outlet power supply. It’s pretty simple – you just match your cable style – three or two prong – and plug it in. Then you have two extra power ports. Easy peasy, right? The best part? This Google translation [...]

The Russian Mr. Wizard would like you to suck on his fumes

As far as I can tell this is some begelled Russian Mr. Wizard showing off the production of mist from a melting piece of dry ice. While the mist is essentially carbon dioxide it's probably not the best thing to give to kids. However, he does say "Nie boj sie," meaning "Don't be afraid," when he shoots a stream of it into everyone's faces, which suggests he's been huffing this stuff for years with no ill-effects. Why? Триглав only knows.

Remember when I was all like “The iPad does Flash?” Yeah. Well. No.

Yes, I knew Apple would never add Flash. Yes, I knew it was probably an accident that they showed Flash. But Apple, as we see, does nothing without running it past a vat full of lawyers. That they showed Flash on an iPad running on the NY Times website was clearly a mistake and, more [...]

PSA: Some OLED screens don’t suck under direct sunlight anymore

I loves me some AMOLED screens. They're easier on the battery, easier on the eyes, and the colors tend to be so damned strong that they just about jump off the screen and punch you in the face. I mean, what's not to love? Oh, that's right - they tend to fail miserably as soon as you step outside. Mix one part direct sunlight with one part AMOLED screen, and you'll find yourself with a completely illegible screen. At least, that used to be the case.. We're not quite sure why they didn't play this up with deafening fanfare, but it seems like Samsung has stealthily solved the direct sunlight dilemma.

AT&T and Verizon drop lawsuits, make nice for the holidays

digg_url ='http://digg.com/gadgets/AT_T_and_Verizon_drop_lawsuits_make_nice_for_the_holidays'; Well well, maybe we can all get along after all: AT&T and Verizon just dropped their various advertising-related lawsuits against each other. We can't say we're surprised, considering AT&T lost its request to have Verizon's ads pulled down for the holidays -- spending money to litigate this further would have have simply been a waste, and generated even more bad PR. Now let's just hope these two suck it up and battle it out over service quality and pricing, like they should have been doing all along. Or AT&T can just make some more nonsensical Luke Wilson commercials, whatevs.

Update: Whoa, so this is crazy. We just checked out the other suit that was dismissed, and it turns out that Verizon actually sued AT&T back in July, but not for any damages -- instead, Big Red asked the court to rule that its various "Most Reliable 3G Network" taglines were actually true. That wackiness certainly explains why AT&T felt the need to push back, we suppose, and it makes Verizon's current whining over Sprint's "Most Dependable 3G Network" claims part of a larger, lamer pattern. We've included a shot of the case after the break, check it out.

The Verizon Hub has been discontinued, try not to get upset

Oh, the Verizon Hub. You came to the market just a few years too late. There was a time when a VoIP device with instant messaging capabilities would have been welcomed into the kitchens everywhere but that time was 2006 and not 2009. Now, that market has primarily moved onto full featured smartphones and somewhat killing the need for a home base type device. And so the Hub is no more. Verizon has official canceled the product.

  • Jabra, you got me good with the Stone headset teaser pack

Jabra, you got me good with the Stone headset teaser pack

So I got home a few minutes ago, grabbed the mail and sat down to watch Michigan sneak a win over Indiana. I noticed a small, black package in the mail, but I didn't care about it until I was sure that Michigan was going to hold off Indiana. After all, I thought, it was probably just another flash drive with some random press release on it. After Michigan intercepted the ball - and the call was upheld - I opened it up only to find a small satchel and a card that clearly showed the Jabra Stone teaser image. Oh man, we've already seen what it's suppose to look like but I didn't think the Stone was suppose to come out for another couple of weeks, I thought. So I quickly opened the black pouch and was instantly disappointed. You suck, Jabra.

  • Two-factor authentication now available for Amazon Web Services

Two-factor authentication now available for Amazon Web Services

gemalto tokenPasswords suck. A good password is hard to remember, and a weak password is easy to guess. There are lots of attempts at finding ways to solve the problems of passwords, like one-time passwords, biometric authentication, and more. One of the most attractive solutions is two-factor authentication, which requires that you know something (a short passphrase, usually), and that you have something. The thing that you have is most often a little token generator: every 30 or 60 seconds a new set of digits is displayed on a screen. To successfully log in, you need to supply the passphrase that you know along with the digits displayed on the token. Big businesses have been using two-factor authentication for some time. Now it's being made available for anyone with an Amazon Web Services account.

Inventions that suck: turn a 5 gallon bucket into a wet/dry vac

Just in time for the holiday season, we're starting to see the usual crop of gadget that are, shall we say, less then top-shelf. I think it's safe to include this on that list, the BucketVAC. When I read the website for this thing, I feel like I should be wearing a blue shirt and yelling at a camera.

  • Step-by-step kitchen timer helps terrible chefs suck less

Step-by-step kitchen timer helps terrible chefs suck less

I'll admit it: as hard as I may try, I am absolutely terrible in the kitchen. It's not that I can't make things that taste good; give me some chicken and a slow cooker, and I'll make tacos that blow your face off. But if you put me in charge of a full meal, you'll end up with 3 or 4 things that would have tasted great had I not burned them to hell. Last week I attempted to make a grilled cheese sandwich and a smoothie, and got so distracted with finding the perfect smoothie texture that I ended up burning the damned grilled cheese sandwich. I'll repeat that: I screwed up grilled cheese. If only this kitchen timer concept from Yonko Design was real, my culinary woes would be a thing of the past.

It's a big three-way tie this time around, with T-Mobile, Alltel, and Verizon all taking a victory lap. AT&T follows behind with an "About Average" (3/5) rating, while Sprint stumbles with a paltry 2/5.
