Android 2.2 Froyo source code available today

It's still not hitting the bulk of Nexus Ones as far as we can tell, but for what it's worth, Google has unleashed the source code for Android 2.2 today, which is a solid sign that the code's been bulletproofed to the Open Handset Alliance's satisfaction and is ready for deployment across a number of phones from different manufacturers and carriers. It's still ultimately up to a bunch of gatekeepers in suits to decide when various models will get the upgrade, but this is basically zero day -- so let the countdown begin.

Spankin’ new shot of the Motorola Shadow emerges, along with contradictory specs

It seems like only hours ago that a leaked shot of the yet-to-be-announced Motorola Shadow emerged, yet here we are with another shot of the possible successor to the Droid. This time around there is no wacky story accompanying the leak, but this is the first shot of the device that hasn't been directly front-facing (you can clearly see the HDMI connector on the side there), so at least that's interesting.

Workers sue iPhone maker Wintek over n-hexane poisoning

Forty-four workers are suing iPhone screen manufacturer Wintek for forcing them to use n-hexane, the same stuff they found in soy burgers a few weeks ago, to clean iPhone screens. The chemical causes “nerve damage and sometimes paralysis.” Chinese media is reporting a manager forced his employees to use hexane because of its cleaning properties. The [...]

The BlackBerry Bold 9650 and Pearl 3G hit the web a bit early [update: now official]

Oh well. Even though The Street announced RIM’s two upcoming phones a bit early this morning, it still doesn’t take away from their appeal. Suits, corporate types and anyone that takes mobile email seriously should take notice. These two are nice. The Bold 9650 seems to be a trackpad-equipped Tour loaded with 802.11b/g, GPS, a 3.2 [...]

Nice Doggie: Puppy Arcade 7 available

Of all the wonderful uses for Linux, gaming hasn’t traditionally been one of its stronger suits. But as we all know, old console emulators provide eons of entertainment and said emulators run across a variety of operating systems. And so there’s Puppy Arcade, a derivation of the small-footprint, runs-on-just-about-any-hardware Puppy Linux.

Samsung and Sharp settle dispute over LCD patents

They fought each other in courts in the USA, Europe, Japan and Korea since summer 2007, but now Samsung and Sharp finally settled [Sharp's official press release in English] all their ongoing lawsuits over LCD technology patents. The suits (initiated by Sharp) concerned a total of five different LCD-related technologies Sharp owned, i.e. regarding the “brightness, response speeds and viewing angles of LCD panels”.

Office Depot somehow gets exclusive rights to sell $230 NASCAR chair

I don't know how in the world Office Depot managed to secure the rights to this exclusive, limited edition “No. 14 Tony Stewart NASCAR High-Back Leather Bonded Chair” but all the suits at Office Max and Staples must be going ape shit right about now. If you don’t have stock in Office Depot, buy as much as you can afford as soon as possible (disclosure: I don’t own any stock in Office Depot… YET).

Kodak Files Lawsuits Against Apple, RIM Over Digital Imaging Technology Patent

Eastman Kodak Company (in short, Kodak) has filed lawsuits against Apple and Research In Motion, alleging that both have infringed digital imaging technology patented by the company. The complaint, filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission, claims that Apple’s iPhone devices and all RIM’s camera-enabled BlackBerry phones infringe a patent that covers technology related to a method for previewing images. Separately, Kodak filed two suits today against Apple that claim the infringement of patents related to digital cameras and certain computer processes. In a statement, Kodak says it remains open to negotiating an agreement with both Apple and RIM, which it claims to have tried reaching for years.

  • BlackBerry Media Sync hits version 3.0 with 2-way photo management

BlackBerry Media Sync hits version 3.0 with 2-way photo management

Even after years of consumer-facing products and marketing, it's still tough to use words like "media" and "BlackBerry" in the same sentence -- but the fact of the matter is that RIM got out ahead of the 3.5mm headphone jack trend long before many other manufacturers did and currently offers cameras (not awesome cameras, but cameras nonetheless) on every modern model it sells. To that end, its Media Sync software has been helping suits get loose after the 9-to-5 with music management for well over a year now, and the latest version -- available later today -- adds some comprehensive photo capability to match. Media Sync 3.0 for Windows now includes automatic downsizing for pictures transferred from PCs to devices (wouldn't want to chew through your microSD card too fast, after all) and can automatically prompt users to pull in new photos snapped with the onboard camera after connecting. Makes you wish one of these things had a 5 megapixel sensor with decent optics, doesn't it? Look for the download to go live on RIM's site around noon today.

The Serio speakers from Waterfall Audio are stunning (and expensive)

I've never heard of Waterfall Audio before. I think they qualify for one of my rules in the audio world though: if you've never heard of an audio company and they cost more than products from a familiar brand, it's probably good stuff. Apparently the company made a name for itself a few years ago with a glass-enclosed speaker line. Who knew. The latest speaker line, Serio, keeps the glass theme alive, but manages to shrink the package down to a satellite-style size. Too bad all that glass and square lines scream the '90s.

  • No-contract $30 / $45 Straight Talk wireless plans storm Walmart

No-contract $30 / $45 Straight Talk wireless plans storm Walmart

Remember when TracFone horrified the world with its Straight Talk phone selection back in July? Clearly the suits in Bentonville weren't so scared, as now Walmart is latching on to that very plan and claiming it as its own. In over 3,200 of the outfit's retail stores across America, consumers will be able to snag an admittedly pathetic cellie and a rather decent calling plan for just $30 a month. Three Hamiltons gets you 1,000 voice minutes, 1,000 texts and 30MB of mobile web access, not to mention nationwide coverage and free 411 calls. If that's not quite enough, a $45 per month option provides unlimited everything (voice / SMS / mobile web). Of course, the price of using an antediluvian LG 220, LG Slider 290 or Samsung 451 can't be measured in mere dollars, but hey, humiliation's only temporary -- right?

  • BlackBerry Storm 2 up to something “this week,” socially promiscuous in November

BlackBerry Storm 2 up to something “this week,” socially promiscuous in November

The New York Times has a lengthy piece on RIM's and Verizon's failed attempt to upset the iPhone's dominance with the BlackBerry Storm launch. Interesting, but not as interesting as this little nugget:
"This week, Verizon and R.I.M. are trying again with a Storm do-over, the Storm 2."
What that means, isn't exactly clear but it would seem to point to an official Storm 2 announcement this week, possibly today. Mike Lazaridis, RIM's co-CEO was also paraphrased as saying that RIM was "about to release" version 5.0 of its BlackBerry software. Meanwhile, RIM's other CEO, Jim Balsillie, boasted of plans to "shake up the market" in November when it opens it private communication network to social network updates and entertainment content from outside sources. A move that could swiftly bring an end to the BlackBerry's "for suits only" reputation, like, totally forever.

Video: Motorola’s MotoBlur ported to a HTC G1

Hey, hey. This hack will probably make more than a few G1 owners giddy. Apparently someone got their hands on a leaked copy of a Motorola Cliq ROM, which just so happens to have all the stuff for Motorola's custom Android build, MotoBlur, and has converted it for the G1. Don't ask us where these files are or the install instructions for your G1. We don't know. But what we do know is that this port probably doesn't make the Motorola suits all that happy, but this is the joy of an open platform like Android. Get use to it.

By changing the way the discs are made, and improving the laser, Sharp has been able to increase the maximum capacity of the Blu-ray disc to 100GB, from the current standard of 50GB.
