Zune HD hacked, entire hardware open to homebrew programmers
Posted on April 16, 2010 | No CommentsPotentially huge news for Zune HD owners—that means Devin and I. It has been hacked~! Yes, the good folks over at ZuneBoards have hacked the Zune HD to pieces, giving homebrew developers full access to the hardware, access that otherwise lay behind the XNA development kit. The Zune HD isn't too shabby, so I fully expect to see ports of popular emulators like FCEUX in no time at all.

Video: Japanese company shows Super Mario Bros. on Kindle emulator
Posted on April 16, 2010 | No Comments
We've shown you an N64 emulator running on a hacked iPad just a few days ago, and now it's time to see how Super Mario Bros. would look like on a Kindle. And the short answer is that the 1985 NES game would look awful: it's slow, it's in black and white only, it has no sound, it's buggy (since when can Mario kill Goombas by bumping into them?), and apparently, you can't even control Mario properly. Not that this is surprising.

PAX East 2010: The oddest Street Fighter battle you’e ever seen
Posted on March 27, 2010 | No CommentsYou'll find no one here who's not down for a round or two (or 10) of Street Fighter. No one! In fact, I'm half-convinced that that's Greg under that helmet.

Ubisoft tries to spin DRM server crash, says the games are just too popular for their own good!
Posted on March 8, 2010 | No CommentsOh, Ubisoft. You so quickly went from the guys that brought us Splinter Cell (young people: Splinter Cell used to be cool in the early to mid 2000s) to the guys that have created the stupidest DRM known to man. Oh, and you're also incapable of telling the truth. The authentication servers for Assassin's Creed II (I thought that comes out tomorrow?) and Silent Hunter V were completely inaccessible for a number of people yesterday. Why? Ubisoft claimed it was because of "exceptional demand," but the real reason is that some punk kids (I assume it's punk kids) decided to launch a denial of service attack. I suppose, technically, a denial of service attack involves, on some level, demand...

Shock: Sony invites devs to make games for the PS3
Posted on February 18, 2010 | No CommentsFlash: Sony executive is bullish about the PS3! The Wii—you've heard of it, yes? Years ago, it was hard to find because it was massively popular. You could find one on eBay, but for like $8 million. Nowadays? Not so much. Games like New Super Mario Bros. Wii will sell, sure, but third-party publishers are finding out: Hey, our games aren't selling too well here...

Video game inspired skateboard decks
Posted on February 5, 2010 | No CommentsArtist Logan Zawacki (what a fun name!) put together some pretty impressive game-themed skateboard decks for the I’M BOARD skateboard art show held earlier this week in Florida. Zawacki created four decks in all, each with the following theme: Mega Man, Super Mario Bros. 3, Street Fighter II, and TMNT: The Arcade Game. If you look [...] -
New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the fastest single-console game to reach 10 million sold
Posted on January 25, 2010 | No CommentsCan we agree that Modern Warfare 2 was an average shooter, just one that happened to be backed by a gigantic marketing budget? It wasn't bad, certainly, but the story was bat-shit crazy—Red Dawn was more plausible—and No Russian was so clearly developed to spark controversy. This is why this Mario story warms my heart so. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is now the fastest-selling game on a single console to reach 10 million units sold worldwide. The previous record holder was Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Legend of Zelda cartoons now on Hulu
Posted on December 18, 2009 | No CommentsWhelp! There goes everyone’s Friday. You can now catch 13 episodes of The Legend of Zelda on Hulu (if you’re in the US). You’ll recall that the show ran every Friday on The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and, for many of us, eclipsed the actual Mario episodes in coolness. The episodes are 15 minutes long. [...]
