Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is no stranger to waiting in line outside of the Valley Fair Apple store in San Jose; He found his way to the front of the line for the launch of the original iPhone, and then joined it again for the subsequent launches of the iPhone 3G S and the iPad.
It should come as no surprise, then, that Woz is camped out at that very location right this second, awaiting the launch of the iPhone 4.

It shouldn't come as much of a surprise, but Best Buy has just gotten around to confirming that it won't have any stock of the white iPhone 4 come launch day on Thursday -- the same situation that both AT&T and Apple itself are in. For many buyers, it's not a big deal -- either they don't mind the black version, or they'd planned on buying black anyway -- but for others, this is putting a significant crimp on the launch day festivities. We reached out to Apple and got this:
In other words, they're not revealing much of anything -- okay, scratch that, they're not revealing anything at all about its mystery-shrouded delay, the circumstances behind it, or how long we can expect to wait. Dell dealing HTC Aria for free on new AT&T contract
Posted on June 21, 2010 | No Comments$130 for the newest member of AT&T's Android family? Funk that noise! Dell -- yes, the same Dell that will be offering its own Android phones on AT&T in the near future -- is selling the just-released Aria for free when activated on a new line with a two-year contract. Of course, it's a time-honored tradition for third-party wireless retailers to undercut carriers' own subsidized prices, so it's no big surprise that this is cheaper than $130 -- but for it to drop all the way down to $0 the same week of release is a pretty sweet deal. Too bad the lack of app sideloading is less of a sweet deal... but we digress.

Emblaze’s First Else in danger of becoming a smoldering slab of vaporware?
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No CommentsWe have word from an industry insider that the First Else handset running the ALP OS is in trouble. Not a surprise since Emblaze, the company behind the handset, has been dead quiet about Else ever since CES where it promised a March beta and Q2 launch. From what we hear, the software simply isn't ready and Emblaze has been unable to sign on any major carriers as the components continue to age inside a cellphone first demonstrated in November of 2009.
We've also been told that Emblaze has instructed its employees not to speak to the press about First Else. And indeed, when we called the number that formerly belonged to the Emblaze Mobile marketing manager we were greeted with a very casual "hello" without any mention of the company or the person with whom we were speaking. After confirming that we were indeed speaking with Emblaze Mobile, we related the news about First Else and were promptly transfered to the voicemail of Emblaze's legal representation. Well this comes as a surprise. After fighting all day to order the new iPhone, I gave up, and decided to wait until tomorrow. That is, until I read that the entire pre-order allocation was already sold out. How was anyone able to buy the phone much less buy up every single one?

Apple now accepting iOS 4 apps, multitasking ahoy
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No CommentsAlthough we've been running iPhone OS 4 -- now known as iOS 4 -- since it was first announced in April, we actually haven't been able to try out any of the fancy new multitasking features, since no third party apps have been released with support yet. That's all about to change: as of today, Apple is accepting iOS 4 apps, which means we should see quite a few apps that take advantage of multitasking on the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, as well as make use of the 1500 other new APIs in the system when it launches on June 21.
That's definitely good news, but we've got a feeling Apple's unique take on iPhone multitasking will take a few people by surprise, as only certain tasks are allowed in the background -- and apps that need to run persistently, like IRC and IM clients, still won't really work at all. In fact, there's already some rumblings by devs that they need additional backgrounding tools in order to provide features that users are asking for; Instapaper's Marco Ament has proposed a network polling API that would allow his app to update content in the background, for example. We'll see how quickly Apple responds to these requests, but for right now we're just happy we'll finally be able to switch away from a Skype call or GPS app while using our iPhones.

iPhone 4 at Best Buy for launch, at least 45 devices per store?
Posted on June 8, 2010 | No CommentsThe iPhone 4 at Best Buy on launch day? It'd be no surprise, really -- after all, the retail giant had both the iPhone 3GS and iPad right from the get-go. We just got word from one of our trusted sources that Best Buy will indeed have the newfangled phone at launch, and even better, we've got some details on the inventory. A minimum of 30 units for the 32GB device and 15 of the 16GB will apparently be available at each store, and employee purchases are banned at launch. We can't say for sure without more paperwork, but this source has been pretty reliable before -- if nothing else, it should give you a decent idea just how early you should be preparing to wait in line.
Oh, and RadioShack fanatics? It isn't much of a surprise. I mean, Netflix already has an (amazing) iPad app, and it started surveying interest for an iPhone app early March 2010, while rumors of its impending launch have been swirling for much longer.
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings got up on stage right after Apple CEO Steve Jobs at the WWDC 2010 conference, which we're liveblogging here. Guess why he was there: there's a Netflix app for iPhone on the way, and it's coming this Summer. -

Nexus One, Nokia X6 coming to South Korea in June
Posted on May 31, 2010 | No CommentsLike Japan, South Korea has a wireless industry that's typically leaps and bounds ahead of just about everywhere else in the world -- but the country has never been a Symbian or Android stronghold, so it's actually not much of a surprise that two big recent releases are just now heading over there this Summer. From Nokia, the X6 will be hitting KT in June for 595,000 won, which works out to $495; Google, meanwhile, will be contributing the Nexus One by way of rival operator SKT toward the end of June for an undisclosed price. Don't say you weren't warned, MOTOROI.

Nokia will kick off MeeGo effort with ARM-based silicon, not x86
Posted on May 30, 2010 | No CommentsWe've heard a similar message from Nokia dating all the way back to MeeGo's introduction at MWC back in February, so it comes as little surprise that Espoo is apparently trumpeting the virtues of ARM for its first MeeGo-powered device that's still targeted for the tail end of 2010. What might make this particularly interesting is the fact that MeeGo 1.0 is clearly further along for Atom devices than it is for the Cortex A8-based N900, not to mention that Nokia has already warmed up to Intel thanks to its Booklet 3G -- but regardless of the silicon, getting the platform solid enough for any sort of retail device by the end of 2010 still seems like a tricky proposition when you figure that the ARM build doesn't even have a proper user interface yet. Ultimately, it might come down to a question of size; Intel still hasn't proven that it can scale Atom down far enough to tackle the smartphone market head-on, so if Nokia wants to go small with its first MeeGo hardware, that alone could be impetus enough to go ARM.

HTC EVO 4G gets hacked Froyo port, Sense UI be damned
Posted on May 30, 2010 | No CommentsYou know what happens when you give EVO 4Gs to a room full of some of the brightest developers the world has to offer? Well, [expletive] is going to go down, that's what -- so it comes as little surprise that the phone's already been blessed with a seemingly functional Froyo port, even though neither the phone nor the operation system have even seen a public release yet. The largest distribution of the EVO so far has come at the hands of Google itself, which provided the Android 2.1- and Sense-equipped handsets to attendees of its recent IO conference; a timely upgrade to Android 2.2 has unquestionably been a big sticking point for would-be buyers, though, so it's good to see that early owners are already hard at work making this happen. Root is naturally required for the 2.2 port to work -- and there will undoubtedly be some hurdles to overcome to make this totally usable -- but we have full faith in these lovely wunderkinds. Stream sits still for the camera, shows off its camcorder abilities (video)
Posted on May 29, 2010 | No CommentsIn these halcyon days of impromptu Vietnamese gadget reveals, it should come as no surprise that Acer's Stream has gone from FCC filing to hands-on honey in a few days flat. Now it's been the subject of a rather more thorough photo shoot in Ho Chi Minh City, and also was kind enough to share a little footage filmed from its five megapixel camera. Sadly, it's not raw 720p footage that was YouTube'd, so it's perhaps too early to draw conclusions -- but we'll go ahead and say the video doesn't look very good just the same. Still, it looks to be yet another intriguing entry to the Android assault, and we can't wait for the next leak.
