Wikileaks not worried post-U.S. Army kerfuffle

The site says that the recent arrest of a U.S. Army analyst who had contributed to the site won't negatively affect the site at all. More importantly, the arrest shouldn't prevent future whistle-blowers from shining the light of truth on humanity's darkest secrets. (That sounds ominous, no?)

BlackBerry Bold 9650 hits Verizon tomorrow for $150 after contract

The BlackBerry Bold 9650 will be available for online ordering from Verizon beginning June 3rd (that's tomorrow) and in Verizon stores starting on June 10th. This is the provider's first global handset with GlobalAccess Connect tethering, and in keeping with the "global" theme transnational road warriors can look forward to worldwide VZ Navigator (including Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden and of course ol' Blighty). In-game item in Entropia Universe kinda sorta bought for US$330,000
Posted on December 31, 2009 | No CommentsThis story is not nearly as interesting as I was led to believe. Some guy bought something in the online game Entropia Universe. He bought it with in-game currency—PED3.3 million, to be exact. It just so happens that that amount, PED3.3 million, can be converted at will to real life currency. At current conversion rates that equals approximately US$330,000. So if you want to say that the guy bought an in-game item for US$330,000, well, be my guest.

TeliaSonera’s new LTE network astounds with 43Mbps downloads

Not just any card, mind you, it's presumably the new Samsung 4G card running on TeliaSonera in Sweden and Norway, the world's first commercial LTE network launched on Monday. TeliaSonera bundles the 4G service with 30GB of data for just 599kr (85$) per month. That 5.3Mbps upload and 37ms ping aren't too shabby either. Not exactly the theoretical 100Mbps down / 50Mbps up provided by the LTE spec, but not AT&T either.

Yet another reason to love the Swedes: they give us juicy details. Former LG Sales Manager turned HTC Sweden exec Patrik Andersson has dropped word that a sequel to HTC Hero is coming next year. We know what you're thinking: an upgrade to the company's successful multi-carrier flagship Android device? You don't say! The real interesting point here is when it'll make its debut, and that's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this February. Targeted by Hollywood, OpenBitTorrent lives to fight another day

Today is no different, with OpenBitTorrent (a tracker that Hollywood has accused of being The Pirate Bay's spiritual successor, serving some 550,000 “works”) being given a new lease on life by a Swedish court. The gist is, Hollywood wanted the tracker shut down, but said Swedish court denied the action.

First, the good news: that slide we saw back in August promising Blue Earth deliveries in October was spot on, seeing how Samsung just made an official announcement to that effect. Now, the bad: unless you're in Sweden, that doesn't mean much -- at least, not yet. The HSDPA-equipped full touch handset with an integrated solar charger is set to launch in the Nordic nation this month, with France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Portugal, and "other European and Asian countries" following on shortly; notably missing is the US, which wouldn't benefit from the 900 / 2100MHz 3G radio anyhow. Pricing hasn't been announced, but does it really matter when you'll be saving all that cash on your power bill?

Advice: If your Internet connection drops out while playing an online game, don’t stab a random person

The usual course of action is to mutter “Gosh darn it” to your self, then go about your business. An unusual course of action is to grab a knife, then stab a random person walking in the street. Apparently that has happened, yes.

INQ working on Spotify-branded phone, possibly running Android?

While the Spotify music service continues to tease us US-bound folks from afar, there's word of a Spotify handset now to make us even more jealous. The phone is apparently being built for Swedish provider Telia (Spotify already accounts for 35 percent of digital music sales in Sweden), and according to TechCrunch, INQ is building the phone. Interestingly, the last thing we heard from INQ about future plans was a forthcoming Android handset, and we also have a source that says that Spotify probably wouldn't be placed onto a regular BREW-powered INQ handset, so the optimist in us would like to believe that this Spotify phone could be INQ's big Android play -- there is already an official Spotify Android app to make that whole process seem even more doable. Either way, Telia's Spotify handset should be on the market in a "couple of months."

Are The Pirate Bay’s servers now stored in a nuclear bunker?

The site moved its servers from Sweden to Ukraine last week, and rather than have its servers being stored in some random server farm, they're being stored in a former NATO nuclear bunker. So we think, at least.

Posted on August 4, 2009 | No CommentsSweden's anti-piracy law, IPRED, seems to be working, insofar as various Internet traffic monitors have seen a significant downturn in piracy. The day after the law went into effect, Web traffic fell by some 30 percent, and now, several months later (the law went into effect on April 1), an ISP there says piracy-related traffic is still “free-falling.”

It doesn't aim to give everyone the right to download the latest Modest Mouse album from privatetorrents.com all willy nilly (as the Huffington Post implies), but rather to reform copyright laws so that they accurately reflect the 21st century. And as you may already know, the party had its first European MP elected in the most recent elections.

Pirate Bay fires its copyright-busting cannon at YouTube

Supposedly, the The Pirate Bay guys were found guilty in their recent trial in Sweden, and, supposedly, they got sentenced to a year in prison and had to pay $4.5 million in damages.
But back in the parallel universe which happens to be the real world, they've appealed the verdict and could probably keep doing so for the next few years. So in the meantime they need to keep busy, and what better way to do this than start a new user driven video portal to take on YouTube, called, predictably, Video Bay, allowing users to post and share video clips without having to worry about copyright violations. Seems reasonable. It's not like they need to attract any more legal interest or anything.

(Democracy deficit!) No matter, because it looks like some people in Sweden voted for the Pirate Party, whose raison d'être is to reform copyright law, patents, etc. In fact, enough people voted for the Piratpartiet to give it two seats in the European Parliament. (There's 736 seats in the European Parliamnet.) Hey, it's a start!
