Get swyping: Swype for Android available now in English, Spanish and Italian

We told you this was coming: Swype has just made it possible for any Android handset owner to download their innovative touch-screen enabled text-input application straight from the website. Which means a whole lot of people can henceforth start challenging that Guinness World Record for speedy textin' using Swype. Up until today, Swype came pre-installed on only a fraction of available Android phones (including the all new Motorola Droid X) due to its licensing business model, although the company did open up to 25,000 eager beta testers a couple of months ago - most of whom seem to have completely fallen in love with it. Well, anyone can download it now, but only for a limited time (a couple of days) and with a somewhat limited feature set. Important: it won't work if you have a phone that came pre-installed with Swype and support will be via Swype's forums only.

  • iPad’s International Roll-Out Begins: Here’s What You’ll Be Paying

    iPad’s International Roll-Out Begins: Here’s What You’ll Be Paying

People in Australia, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Japan can now pre-order the iPad from their respective Apple Stores, reports Boy Genius Report. Late last week, Apple had already shared some details on the international roll-out, including the fact that the tablet computers will effectively hit stores in the nine countries cited above on May 28. Details on pricing at the time weren't disclosed yet, but now these are live, too. We've taken the liberty of checking out all nine local stores to see what the respective starting prices look like:

WePad is now called WeTab – under pressure from Apple?

Neofonie, the German company behind the much-hyped iPad rival WePad, has changed the name of its tablet computer to WeTab, in a surprise move. The company has announced the name change on its Facebook page, stopping short of explaining why. We have a sneaking suspicion a certain computer and smartphone maker based in Cupertino has something to do with it, though.

  • Kindle Apps for Tablet Computers: Is it the king of ereaders?

Kindle Apps for Tablet Computers: Is it the king of ereaders?

There's no doubt about it: the iPad is the elephant in the ereader room but there's one thing I'm certain: it won't kill off the ebook readers. Amazon just took another length in the Kindle's already strong position on the ereader battlefield with the announcement of Kindle Apps for Tablet Computers. This app picks up where the standard desktop Kindle program drops off. Just like nearly every other desktop application, the original PC and Mac Kindle app isn't optimized for finger navigation with small buttons and drop down menus. Plus, it's not pretty and almost utilitarian in design. The upcoming tablet program, however, takes styling cues from Apple's iBooks and looks finger friendly enough. This is huge. No longer can the iPad claim dominance on the color ebook world. The upcoming Kindle tablet program will be able to run on presumably any PC tablet and still sync to the other Kindle apps, mobile or otherwise. Knock "color ebook reader" off of the iPad's list of Pros. The tablet race just got a bit more interesting.

  • Notice the Windows alternative in HP’s slate device. This is a good thing.

Notice the Windows alternative in HP’s slate device. This is a good thing.

We have written repeatedly that Windows itself is one of the main reasons why touchscreen computers have never caught the general public's attention. The interface just wasn't designed for finger input. Like it or not, that's the truth. Windows was designed to be used with a mouse, and to a lesser extent, a pen or stylus. That's fine. Windows 7 works great. I'm writing this on a Win7 machine. But I hate Windows on my tablet computers for the aforementioned reason. It's also the reason I'm very apprehensive of the upcoming onslaught of slate computers. I'm afraid that wonderful hardware will be passed up in favor of the disappointing iPad because of the interface. But Adobe gave me hope today in its demo of Flash and Air on the HP slate device.

  • Even more cheap Android tablet computers

Even more cheap Android tablet computers

Today seems to be the day of cheap Android tablets, and while I doubt we'll ever see any of these in the U.S. they are worth mentioning. These particular tablets are produced in China by HiVision, a company not exactly known around the world. That could change however, because these little (7-inch) tablets look to be selling for around $100 each.

The AigoPad tablet computer runs Android and that’s all you need to know

The AigoPad is just another example that 2010 will be the year of tablet computers. Not much is known about the slate just yet. • HP shows off its slate computer while revealing a key disappointing detail (Windows)

HP shows off its slate computer while revealing a key disappointing detail (Windows)

Apple isn't the only company with tablets. HP and Dell showed off its slate concepts at CES '10, but their demo's left us with so many questions. HP's CTO Phil McKinney at least reveals a bit more about his company's offering. But hopefully he's out of the loop a bit and HP actually has more planned for the device. Otherwise, the HP Slate will be about as successful as the HP TouchSmart iMac clones. Phil gives the background about the Slate's development at HP. He explains that the company has been working on the unit for about five years and it started out as an ereadering device. But then as many things do, it evolved into what he's showing off in the video. But this slate is plagued by the same fundamental flaw as the vast majority of the current tablets: Windows. Phil states that the device will run plain-jane Windows 7. That's a problem because even Windows 7 with its added touchscreen capabilities is not suited for extended tablet use without a stylus and Apple/Palm/RIM/HTC has proven to the world that we don't need styluses. • Time Inc’s “Manhattan Project” Is A Tablet Magazine

Time Inc’s “Manhattan Project” Is A Tablet Magazine

The magazine business is hurting just like all print publications. And even if their Websites are popular, they generate one tenth the ad revenue of the print side. Since last summer, Time Inc has been working on a “Manhattan Project” to create a digital magazine for the new breed of color tablet computers soon to come to market. (Condé Nast is also working on a similar concept). Today, I got a sneak peak at a demo of the tablet magazine designed for Sports Illustrated. The demo was shown on an HP table computer with a touchscreen, but it could easily be ported to an iPhone or an Apple iTablet, whenever that becomes available. The idea is to create something so beautiful and fluid that readers will actually want to pay for it. The cover takes up the full screen and you tap it to show a table of contents with thumbnails of the actual layout, which you can rearrange to read in any order you like. To flip through the pages you swipe with two fingers, and you can also tap to get a navigational timeline at the bottom. There is also a navigation wheel which lets you share stories via email, Facebook, or Twitter, favorite a story, go to related videos or photos interviews, other articles, or stats such as live scores.
