  • AT&T’s Mark the Spot app comes to Android, makes cursing bad coverage that much easier

AT&T’s Mark the Spot app comes to Android, makes cursing bad coverage that much easier

Previously, one-tap bellyaching about crappy AT&T coverage was the exclusive domain of iPhone customers -- but no longer. The carrier has just launched an Android version of its Mark the Spot app, letting you report the precise location where you suffered any number of unfortunate fates: dropped call, failed call, no coverage, and so on. The theory is that the app makes it easier for AT&T to keep tabs on trouble areas in its network; for all we know, it could just be a digital stress ball for customers, but even the placebo effect can be pretty comforting at times.

E3 is all about Nintendo and Sony today

Microsoft had their dog and pony show yesterday. Project Natal got a proper name and is now called Kinect and the Xbox 360 is now a bit smaller and quieter. In retrospect, there really wasn’t anything all that special announced. Hopefully that won’t happen today. Now it’s Nintendo’s and Sony’s turn. Nintendo is up first at [...]

  • Samsung Galaxy S taking UK pre-orders, Vodafone promises June 15 delivery

Samsung Galaxy S taking UK pre-orders, Vodafone promises June 15 delivery

Were you looking forward to purchasing a 16GB smartphone with unique screen technology and an app-centric OS this month? Great, because the Galaxy S pre-order has now gone live in the UK, offering a delivery only four days away from now and prices that are pretty much par for the superphone course. If you want the Super AMOLED machine for free, minimum monthly cost will be steep, starting out at £35 ($51) a pop over 24 months or £40 ($58) over 18 lunar cycles. Both those deals furnish you with 900 minutes of talk time, unlimited texts, and 1GB of 3G data, but the latter works out to be the better value as it tallies up to £720 ($1,045) in total investment over the full term. Then again, most of what Vodafone has on tap compares favorably to the madness O2 is asking iPhone 4 buyers to pony up.

  • iPhone 4 does 720p HD video, iMovie

iPhone 4 does 720p HD video, iMovie

Digg this!A backside-illuminated 5 megapixel sensor is about to grace the new iPhone's rear, equipped with an LED flash and 720p / 30fps video recording. Tap to focus will also be rolled out in the iPhone Quattro, and Steve Jobs is keen to impress on us all that although the megapixel count has grown, the quality of images has apparently improved. That's what they all say. The added functionality of iMovie won't come for free, however, with Apple asking a $4.99 tithe for granting access to its more sophisticated video editing options. This is moving things along, to be sure, but why is the upper limit of storage still 32GB? A more generous apportionment of memory would've gone very nicely indeed with that HD video mode.

Apple doesn’t accept cash at the Apple Store, not even for an iPad

A human interest story, brought to us by the fine people at KGO-TV in San Francisco. It goes something like this: a woman had saved up for a very long time to buy an Apple iPad. So goes into an Apple Store, tells the clerk that she'd like to buy an iPad, then whips out the requisite $600. Six-hundred in cash, mind you. Then the Apple clerk drops a bombshell: sorry, but we don't accept cash here.

  • Meizu M9 getting Android 2.1, possible August release?

Meizu M9 getting Android 2.1, possible August release?

Well, what do you know -- perhaps there is an M9 in your future (or someone's future) after all! After hearing the one and only Jack Wong detail the thing earlier this year, Beareyes.com is reporting that the device -- with the same 3.6-inch display, 1 GHz (Samsung S5PC110) CPU, HDMI 1.3 out and more -- may be out as early as this August. We think this is certainly do-able, although anything can happen -- as the drawn-out gestation of a certain Meizu M8 made painfully clear. The new news? Rather than KIRFin' up an Apple-esque interface, it looks like Android 2.1 might just be on tap. Sweet, eh? Look for it August 18, for around $350 depending on options... but don't be surprised if you're still looking long past the target date.

  • Visa and DeviceFidelity working to bring mobile payment functionality to iPhone

Visa and DeviceFidelity working to bring mobile payment functionality to iPhone

This ain't the first rodeo for Visa and DeviceFidelity, and if we had to guess, we suspect it won't be the last. Just a few short months after teaming up to bring contactless payments to any mobile with a microSD slot, the two are at it again -- this time aiming for the oh-so-tantalizing iPhone market. Reportedly, the tandem is toiling away in an effort to concoct a protective iPhone shell with a secure memory card that hosts Vista's contactless payment app, payWave. As it stands, the product would only function on the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, leaving upcoming iPhone 4G / HD / Barhopper buyers out in the cold. As with any other payWave-enabled handset, this would allow users to simply tap and go when checking out, a process that our pals over in Japan have had down for centuries now. If all goes well, market trials of the payment-enabled iPhone are set to begin this summer, or approximately six months too late for anyone to seriously care.

Visa wants to turn your iPhone into a credit card

If you've been reading MobileCrunch since November of 2009: A) We love you. Thanks for sticking around. B) You might remember that we did a post on "5 iPhone accessories we're still waiting for" - one of which was an iPhone case that acted as a credit card, relying on the RFID tap-to-pay system already in place in many thousands of retailers. Visa -- whoever that is -- is totally stealing our awesome, completely original, no-one-else-has-had-it-ever idea. And we love them for it.

Don’t wear your watches in the shower or under water

I always had a sneaking suspicion that I was doing something horrible to my watches by wearing them in water and now I know: almost nothing under the sun is truly waterproof. This older post by a watchmaker spells it out in plain English: most waterproof watches are, at best, not waterproof at all. Also, [...]
