This came from the official @starbucks Twitter account so either someone hacked them or this is the dog's honest truth. -

Posted on June 14, 2010 | No CommentsThe folks at Yext.com put on an amazing party in New York for TC’s fifth birthday, including an ice sculpture, booze luge, and lots of pigs in blankets. The most amazing thing? There were females there! Again, thanks for supporting us all these years. It’s been a blast. Music by Minusbaby. -
Microsoft and Apple still in talks for Bing iPhone search option, Google is not on notice
Posted on May 28, 2010 | No CommentsWhat turned into a pretty frenzied rumor this afternoon ended up being much ado about nothing, but there is something noteworthy. As the story goes, TechCrunch reported that Microsoft was going to completely replace Google with Bing as the search engine of choice for the iPhone once OS 4 launches next month. Enter All Things Digital's Kara Swisher, who has a pretty strong track record on all things Redmond. According to her sources, what's being discussed isn't a full swap -- instead, Bing is being considered for an "option" that users can decide between. None of this is what we'd call brand new gossip, and in fact, it sounds exactly like what we heard back in January. So, discussions still seem to be ongoing four months later, which is pretty interesting. For its part, the original TC article has been amended to say the issue is "more complicated" than originally presented. Hey June 7th? You really can't get here fast enough.Microsoft and Apple still in talks for Bing iPhone search option, Google is not on notice originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 28 May 2010 22:24:00 EST. TC Disrupt Startup Alley: Knocking Live has 1.6M users, faster growth than Foursquare, Gowalla
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No CommentsWho’s nailed peer-to-peer live streaming video on smartphones such as iPhone and Android? It’s not Qik, Ustream or Justin.tv, it’s Knocking Live, an application by bootstrapped Point Heads Software. Interestingly enough, Knocking Live reached 1 million users faster than Foursquare or Gowalla did (see graph). Pointy Heads released Knocking Live in December in collaboration with Sourcebits, [...] -
Complain about your dropped iPhone calls… with science
Posted on May 23, 2010 | No CommentsWe just saw a great product at the TC Disrupt Hack Day. It’s basically a class action lawsuit generator against AT&T that uses your actual call drop data to tabulate how many times your phone crashed and how many times you’ve been generally hosed by AT&T. The site is worstphoneever.com and it searches for baseband [...] -
Study: Americans consume 34 gigabytes of information per day
Posted on December 9, 2009 | No CommentsThere's a pretty interesting report that was just published today entitled “How much information?” It was put together by the Global Information Industry of the University of California at San Diego. It looks at the year 2008 and tries to quantify how much information the average American consumes across all forms of media: TV, newspaper, Web sites, radio, you name it. When you crunch all the numbers, it looks like the average American consumes 34 gigabytes of data every single day. (That's 3.6 zettabytes in total.) That's a lot, yes.

Oh boy: World of Warcraft Patch 3.3 goes live today
Posted on December 8, 2009 | No CommentsTuesdays usually stink for World of Warcraft. The servers go down early in the morning for maintenance, and then stay down well after the scheduled time more often than you'd care to see. Today doesn't stink, since Patch 3.3 is indeed dropping. I cannot wait to leave the terribly fancy TC/CG office, get home, fire up the game, then PUG till the sun comes up.

Why the CrunchPad mattered
Posted on November 30, 2009 | No CommentsThere’s already been quite a bit of ink spilled over the demise of the CrunchPad but I thought I’d add a few drops. My opinion is this: the CrunchPad was a testament to the power of online media and a fascinating study in the ability of new media to enact real changes on the real [...] -
Google-branded phone coming early next year?
Posted on November 18, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, LG, Samsung, Android
We've been hearing talk of thoroughly Google-branded phones since before Android was announced -- and if you want to get really technical about it, you could argue that it's already happened twice in the form of the Dev Phone 1 and the Ion. Thing is, those are strictly developer-oriented one-offs based on existing models, and TechCrunch is reporting in a rather authoritative tone today that Google's just about to launch a consumer phone all its own designed to in-house, no-compromise specifications with signs suggesting that either Samsung or LG would be responsible for OEM duties. Allegedly, the device was supposed to be at retail in time for the holidays but ended up getting pushed back into early 2010, at which point we can expect a big marketing push -- but the question is, why? Google had a heavy hand in the design and development of the chunky, geeky HTC Dream, so we already know they're probably better off leaving the details of the industrial design to the guys who've been doing this for a while -- and with strong new partnerships with Verizon and Motorola just now bearing fruit, it's safe to say that Big Red wouldn't be a launch partner. Our most interesting theory here is that AT&T -- which has gone totally radio-silent for all things Android in the past six months -- is responding to the probable impending loss of its iPhone exclusivity by scoring a coup on a gorgeous, aspirational device with the Google logo all over it. Given the time frame that TC's suggesting, it sounds like we wouldn't have to wait long to find out what's what.Google-branded phone coming early next year? originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 04:47:00 EST. Informal CG/TC Meet-up in Israel
Posted on August 31, 2009 | No Comments
Hey, all: I, John Biggs, will be in Israel from the Sept 5 through the 10th. I'd love to meet up with some great start-ups in the Jerusalem/Tel Aviv area. I'm most interested in the great gadgets coming out of there but I'm happy to sit down with local folks to talk web services.
Here's what I'm thinking: I'd like to have an informal event on Tuesday, September 8. I don't know where it will be - suggestions are welcome - and if you'd like to sponsor an hour of drinks, please let me know. Either way, RSVP to john@crunchgear.com with the subject line "RSVP ISRAEL." I'll keep a mailing list and let you know where/when we'll hold the even on Monday morning.

Mattel Mindflex game available for pre-order
Posted on May 24, 2009 | No Comments
Hey, Mike. John here. Remember that weird telekinesis game you liked from CES this year? It's available at Amazon for pre-order, so go ahead and pick it up. It's going to cost $99 and I personally think it's garbage but I know you and the TC team were into it so go ahead and buy it. When I'm in town for WWDC I'll school you all in Jedi mind games. "This is not the blogger you're looking for."
Our video after the jump.
