The Nik & Michael Show: TechCrunch Reviews a new iPhone killer

Presumably this kills iPhones by baking them to death, but our Nik Cubrilovic and Michael Arrington have decided to review dual hot dog and bun toaster and compare it to the iPhone on the basis of its ability to cook hot dogs. It seems that they were able to make hot dogs and eat them and, interestingly enough, they got 9 minutes of video out of this abomination. They also got the machine to shoot a hot dog at them.

Beware the ‘r word’ when reading up on Net Neutrality

The beauty of the Drudge Report right now is that Mr. Drudge is working against his very interests. He's got some ridiculous headline right now, JULIUS AT FCC WANTS TO 'REGULATE' INTERNET, that's meant to wile up his easily excitable readership. What's going on is that the FCC has moved one step closer to bringin Net Neutrality to fruition, and has invited the public to weigh in until January 14.

WordPress.com Blogs: Now more mobile friendly

I’m a big fan of WordPress, be it their free blogging service (WordPress.com) or their free blogging platform (WordPress.org). Heck, the entire TechCrunch Network and my personal blog run on the stuff. As of yesterday, two mobile themes, a modification of WPtouch and an updated version of the WordPress Mobile Edition (both shown above), became [...]

Three cool iPhone apps that are perfect for mobile news consumption

My name is Robin Wauters, and I'm a news junkie. Being obsessed with consuming as much news - mostly technology related, of course - as humanly possible in the all too short span of any given day comes with the territory of working for TechCrunch, but I've always been a fan of obtaining as much information as fast as I could. You could say my ever-growing habit of trying to consume as much news in my waking hours as I can is more of a natural cause for my employment in the fast-paced tech blogging scene than it is a result. It also means I feel very disconnected when I'm not near a computer or mobile phone I can use to tap the Internet for the never-ending stream of news that gets pumped onto the wires.

TechCrunch/CrunchGear Meetup Taipei: 6 Taiwanese tech startups demo their services

Asus, Acer, HTC or BenQ: Taiwan is well-known as a significant player in the global electronics industry, but it's safe to say the Taiwanese web landscape is still a black box for many of us. Taiwan ranks 10th in Asia in terms of Internet population, with around 15 million people currently online. Add to this an online ad market that grew by 14.9% to $208 million in 2009, and you have a fairly attractive Internet market overall. The country does have promising tech start-ups with a global focus, some of which I talked with earlier this week during a (private) trip to Taipei. The TechCrunch/Crunchgear meetup on Monday, organized together with partner and co-organizer Chili Consulting (a local innovation strategy firm), was a blast. Over 120 people attended the meetup despite of a typhoon that traveled through Taiwan that day (we actually had to stop registration after a few hours due to space restrictions). Taipei- and San Jose-based hardware maker IPEVO sponsored the event. A total of six Taiwan-based startups were given the chance to pitch their services (all are available in English) to the audience. Here’s a rundown on all of these companies.

INQ to build Spotify branded phone

Wow, if nothing else, new European music service Spotify, which is yet to launch in the U.S., has captured everyone's attention. TechCrunch Europe reports that Swedish telecommunication service provider Telia will soon release a Spotify-branded mobile phone. A source with knowledge of the deal tells us that London, UK based INQ is developing the Spotify-branded phone. The company already creates phones with tight integrations to social networking services like Facebook, Skype and Windows Live Messenger. INQ is backed by Li Ka-Shing, who recently invested in Spotify. We're still gathering details on this, such as date of availability and price. The phone is in the design stage right now, and there are plans, we're told, to roll it out to all markets via partnerships with various carriers.

    Review: Tokyo CrunchGear Meetup

IMG_8067 Greetings, from the Land of the Rising Sun! You missed a wonderful meetup in Tokyo last night at the Ebusu Beer Station. We had about two dozen folks sharing food, drinks, and conversation. Although most were living in the Tokyo area, at least one fellow traveled several hours from Kyoto to join us! Many thank to the TechCrunch Japan crew for coordinating this, and thanks to everyone who made it out. Click on through for photos and more!

Apple bans App Store’s 3rd-most prolific developer

Over the past few weeks, Apple has been much-maligned for keeping apps such as Google Voice off the App Store. These weren’t some random garbage apps; there was no farting, or baby shaking. Google Voice apps are utilities which many have come to rely on, and thus many (including TechCrunch founder Mike Arrington) are [...]

From Tokyo: Demo of “almost finalized” augmented reality tagging app Sekai Camera (videos)

I attended the inaugural event of the AR Commons in Tokyo today, a new initiative that's supposed to help set "standards of augmented reality as a public environment". In other words, the symposium is an attempt to understand what augmented reality, the mixing of the real world with computer data, really is and what consequences the concept will have on the society. And one part of the symposium was dedicated to one of TechCrunch's favorite companies out there: Japan-based Tonchidot. CEO Takahito Iguchi, who delivered an unbelievable performance during his pitch at TechCrunch 50 (where his company was launched), presented an almost final version of Sekai Camera.
