Is the Next Prius Going To Be A Tesla?

Toyota and Tesla announced a new partnership at Tesla's headquarters in Palo Alto today, the auto makers will collaborate on technology, the development of new electric vehicles and Toyota will purchase $50 million of Tesla's common stock. The press conference featured the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tesla CEO, Elon Musk and TMC President, Akio Toyoda. Calling it an "explosion" for California (I think he meant this in the positive sense, not the Terminator sense) Schwarzenegger framed it as a victory for California's environmental agenda and the economy. He predicts it will create 1,000 jobs for the state's embattled economy.

One step closer to our robot overlords: the VTOL UAV

Bad news folks, a defense contractor just revealed that they have successfully tested an unmanned vertical take-off and landing drone. This is getting just a little too close to the hunter-killers seen in the Terminator movies.

TC50: Toys Spring To Life With ToyBots Internet Magic

Eventually, it’s probably safe to assume that all electronics will be in some way connected to the Internet. As long as you’re not worried about a Skynet-style Terminator apocalyptic future, that’s probably a good thing. With that in mind, the online gaming network SGN began working on a secret project to connect children’s toys to the Internet. Today, ToyBots is being unveiled at TechCrunch50.

Old-timey grenade-shaped Atari controller brings us back

If the action couldn't happen on screen then it surely could happen off screen. This odd, made-in-Denmark controller was called the Terminator and was shaped like a very realistic grenade - complete with pin. I remember the old style "stick" controllers with the triangular head so I guess this is similar. You'd hold this in your hand and move the top with your thumb. Sadly you'd also probably look like you were ready to blow up the computer lab, a sad side effect of these frightened times.

What happens when artificial intelligence gets too advanced for its own good?

Imagine you're sitting at the dining table reading the latest Wrestling Observer, as you do from time to time. Nothing too crazy, just minding your own business. Then, suddenly—it's always suddenly—the microwave hops off the counter, wielding a knife, and comes charging after you. Oh, dear!

Where the Wild Things Are videogame dropping in October

Yet another movie licensed videogame was announced today by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and it’s one that I hope doesn’t suck. Side note: I popped in Terminator Salvation (also from WBIE) yesterday for the first time and I couldn’t stand to play it for more than five minutes. It was horrible. And it had so [...]

Cyberdyne Corp. starts exporting its robotic exoskeleton HAL-5 (video)

A robot venture from Japan called Cyberdyne (yes, just like the evil corporation in the Terminator movies) has been in the news for years now for its futuristic exoskeleton HAL-5, a wearable robotic suit that helps paralyzed persons walk and lift heavy objects. Until now, the spectacular suit was marketed mainly in Japan, but today it came to light that Professor Sankai (the mastermind behind the exoskeleton) plans to step up the internationalization of his company. Six units of HAL-5 will be exported to hospitals and health care facilities in Odense, a city in Denmark, as early as next month. The suits will be tested for six months for safety and efficiency.

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter sends back first images

NASA is gearing up for a trip back to the moon and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is one of the first steps. This satellite will orbit the moon at only 50 km and send back high resolution, 3D images of the lunar surface to map out potential landing sites . And yes, it will be able to get clear photos of the Apollo gear left behind, which will no doubt send conspiracy idiots scrambling for more excuses. The first pics the LRO sent back are after the jump.

Video: Israel’s One-Eyed Robotic Combat Snake

The Israelis are working on this rather creepy robot snake, a reconnaissance device which fitfully flips and flaps across almost any terrain and captures some rather clear video along the way thanks to the big camera embedded in its head. So creepy is it that it seems to have startled the BBC reporter into this [...]
