Twilight-customized LG GD510 set to Eclipse all other phones in France

Think Apple and Android fans are hardcore? Those guys are mere lightweights compared to Twilight fanatics, who'll soon have a phone to call their own too. Coming with eight tie-in wallpapers and that embellished back cover, this version of the GD510 -- a thoroughly unexciting featurephone with ambitions above its 3-inch, resistive touchscreen station -- has just become available over in France, for free on contracts with Orange or in exchange for €199 ($238). As a bonus temptation, LG is also throwing in a free copy of Twilight: New Moon, though we doubt anyone buying this phone will have seen that movie less than a dozen times.

  • Boost-branded Motorola i1 goes live on Best Buy’s site

Boost-branded Motorola i1 goes live on Best Buy’s site

You won't find any mention of the Android-powered Motorola i1 on Boost Mobile's site just yet, but the phone -- the very first to run Android for iDEN networks -- looks destined for Sprint's prepaid brand now that Best Buy has fessed up to it. It really doesn't come as any surprise since we already knew the i1 would be launching on Sprint's Direct Connect service, and it seems rather silly for those guys not to get as much use out of the phone as they can, particularly considering that it's arguably the most exciting iDEN handset ever made. That's not saying much, we know... but you know what we mean. Now, the question is: who's going to pay $349.99 for it with no commitment?

  • Epic Games says something silly about piracy

Epic Games says something silly about piracy

Anyone else tired of video game publishers complaining about piracy? Like, human nature is such that you'll always have a bunch of knuckleheads who will hop on BitTorrent and download away. Forget them, they're jerks. Just focus on the non-jerks out there and go about your business. Anyhow, today the spotlight falls on Epic Games, makers of Unreal and Gears of War. Seems those guys think that all the money these days is in consoles, so PC gamers will have to get used to crummy ports or nothing at all!

Alistair Overeem will be in EA Sports MMA (then hide out in Japan for 3 years)

You wouldn't know it, but Strikeforce, TNA to UFC's WWE, has a big show this weekend, and it marks the first time that Alistair Overeem has fought in the U.S. for some three years. This is relevant to us here because EA has revealed that Overeem will, indeed, be in its upcoming EA Sports MMA. That's him on the right. I thought that would have been a given, given that he's the current Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion, but here we are, treating this like it's news. (Overoids, amirite?!)

Student loan data stolen: 3.3 million ex-college students look forward to giant headache

It was only a few days ago that I mentioned that, you know, your data is never secure. So, this story isn't surprising at all. It turns out that the records of more than 3.3 million student loans were stolen a few days ago. Data stolen includes names, Social Security numbers, and credit card numbers. Awesome.

Switzerland approaches complete ban on violent video games

That's funny, not one hour ago I mentioned that Australia had embraced the idea that adults have the capacity to make decisions vis-à-vis buying violent video games. Good ol' Switzerland, though, the darling of Europe, has passed a law essentially outlawing violent video games. I'd feign, well, not anger, but something, but it's Switzerland: how can you get mad at those guys?

  • Henry Morgan wants the word ‘pirate’ back

Henry Morgan wants the word ‘pirate’ back

Hollywood (the movie studios, the record labels, etc.) sure does have a knack for causing its own problems. You'll recall that it's en vogue to call copyright infringers "pirates," which is an insult to legitimate pirates like William Kidd and Henry Morgan. Just because you can fire up uTorrent doesn't mean you can take on a Spanish Armada. But, whatever, it's simply easier for Hollywood and its acolytes to call you kids "pirates" than it is to have an adult discussion about the subject.

  • Should we even bother going after cyber-criminals?

Should we even bother going after cyber-criminals?

At what point do you stop trying to track and prosecute cyber-criminals? Obviously, you can't let criminals run around willy-nilly, but when you look at the resources involved in bringing those guys to justice—and are you really nabbing the right guys in the first place?—it's worth at least talking about. Is fighting cyber-crime about as futile as fighting the war on drugs?

Vodaphone’s $15 phone for the developing world

The mood in Barcelona must be somber, for the city's team lost to Atletico Madrid yesterday. Granted, Atletico Madrid is Barcelona's bogey team, but come on, Atletico Madrid?! Team CrunchGear could beat those guys on the pitch. Still, the Mobile World Congress soldiers on. Here's something that caught my interest—something aside from the Windows Phone!—is the Vodaphone 150. It's for the developing world.

  • T-Mobile rolling out Android Market carrier billing — on some phones

T-Mobile rolling out Android Market carrier billing — on some phones

The good news is that you don't need to hook up that shady Google character (whoever that is) with your credit card information anymore when you're looking to buy paid Android apps from the Market if you're on T-Mobile -- the bad news, though, is that only 1.6-powered phones are getting the update at this point. Over the course of December, the carrier's going to be pushing a new version of the Android Market on the G1 and myTouch 3G that lets folks charge purchases straight to their phone bills, and -- in line with Google's existing policy -- you'll have a 24-hour trial period before the billing actually goes through. For the time being, CLIQ and Behold II users are being left out in the cold, a sign that carrier billing is joined at the hip with the revamped Market that was pushed out with Donut. That sucks, but we suppose you could look at that one of two ways: either it'll end up getting back-ported to 1.5, or -- more intriguingly -- 1.6 will end up happening sooner or later for those guys.

Greenpeace hates Apple, HP a little bit less today

Like many of you, my knowledge of Greenpeace begins and ends with that one Seinfeld episode, the one where the NBC executive, so in love with Elaine, freaks out and joins the organization in order to impress her. That is to say I don't really understand the “point” of the organization, or who appointed it the protector of the environment. But, it is, somehow, so let's roll with it. Good news for HP and Apple: Greenpeace hates you two a little bit less today! Break out the champagne!
