HP partners with video conferencing firm Vidyo, drops hints at mobile applications

The ink's barely dry on HP's acquisition of some assets from Phoenix, but that's not the company's only recent deal -- it also announced a partnership with video conferencing firm Vidyo last week. That wouldn't necessarily be all that notable in and of itself, but HP seems to be going out of its way to talk up the potential mobile implications of the deal, with HP's Halo marketing manager Darren Podrabsky offering the following tidbit to PreCentral:
Of course, there isn't much more than speculation about those possible mobile applications at the moment, with the official press release on the partnership (after the break) only confirming that that one of the first uses of Vidyo's technology will be an "executive desktop solution" running on an HP TouchSmart PC. Android 2.2 coming to Nexus One, open source community ‘in the coming weeks’

Just a day after wrapping up a rather monumental Google I/O event in Northern California, the company's official show Twitter account has belted out a tidbit that just about every attendee was wondering about. According to the outfit, Android 2.2 (yeah, that's Froyo for the inexperienced) will be "made available to OEMs and the open source community in the coming weeks," and it'll be hitting up the HTC-built Nexus One in the "next few weeks." HTC Glacier, LED, and Vision among next round of vague codenames?
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No CommentsStart that wild imagination of yours running, because you're going to need it to make sense of this little tidbit. A tipster who claims (and gives us visual evidence as proof) that he was able to root out HTC product names like Incredible and Legend months before release on some sort of internal component bidding site has sent us a new shot showing three names we haven't heard before: "Glacier," "LED," and "Vision." Vision is listed with "TMO" next to it, suggesting it's coming to T-Mobile -- though we've no idea whether that's referring T-Mobile's European or American branch, which typically operate with virtually zero overlap. Glacier sounds like a phone that's either really slow, really cold, or is rapidly disappearing due to environmental forces beyond HTC's control, and LED sounds like... well, Light Emitting Diode. Yep, your guess is as good as ours.

Wikitude Drive AR nav app beta announced, available in Android Market (video)

With all the action going down at Google I/0 you can be excused for missing this latest tidbit: the folks behind Wikitude have made the beta version of Drive (their augmented reality personal navigation app) available for free for 2,000 users. And we just got our hands on it, so we know that there are at least a few downloads left at the Android Market. The full-featured demo sports NAVTEQ map data, both AR street view and 3D map view, worldwide coverage, voice commands, and both driving and walking directions. There's no word yet on when the final version will be released, so this might be your last chance for a while to play with what's stacking up to look like a pretty decent application. Amid the flurry of news surrounding the next-gen iPhone revelations, another little tidbit of information about iPhone OS 4.0 has made it's way out: it seems that Facebook contact and event integration may be a new system feature.
While this may not be a new concept for the Android and WebOS devout among us, it is one that the iPhone could really benefit from.
