DirecTV would like to remind you that they will have Avatar on time, unlike Netflix

We're starting to see the results of Netflix's deal with the devil. DirecTV really wants to make sure you know that while Netflix won't have Fox and Time Warner's movies at release day, they will be on PPV. Is that the sound of someone rubbing their hands together in a greedy way?

Top BitTorrent sites are not afraid of BitStalker

Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Cox are busy funding some new, super-duper anti-BitTorrent technology called BitStalker. The difference between it and other anti-BitTorrent systems is that it's said to be accurate. That's a huge development, actually.

Fox, Time Warner Cable agree to deal: Your NFL football is safe!

Fox an Time Warner Cable struck a deal last night that prevented the unthinkable: no NFL football (and Fox News, and Fox Soccer Channel, etc.) for millions of Americans in the some of the biggest TV markets in America, like New York City and Los Angeles! The terms of the deal weren't announced, but at last check-in, Time Warner Cable was prepared to give Fox between 20 and 30 cents per subscriber (Fox was asking for $1 per subscriber). You knew the deal was going to happen, didn't you?

Clearwire raises an additional $1.5B to continue building its nationwide WiMAX network

Sprint, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House Networks (to name a few) continue to bet big on Clearwire’s WiMAX nationwide wireless network. The foursome have just pumped an additional $1.494 billion into Clearwire’s coffer, with another $50 million coming from Intel and $20 million from Eagle River Holdings. CHA-CHING. More specifically, Sprint, which owns 51 [...]

How to use RSS to automatically download anything from Usenet

It’s the tree of life, and for no particular reason, either. As a corollary to Biggs’ “cable companies are doomed” article from earlier today, I thought I’d demonstrate how easy it is to accomplish what he was threatening. That is, live a happy and successful life without having to pay $100+ a month to Comcast, Time [...]

In yo’ face, Apple: Microsoft poaching Apple retail store talent with higher pay

Man, things are hotting up in the Microsoft vs. Apple feud. The latest news is that, yeah, not only is Microsoft planning on, well, ripping off Apple's retail store model wholesale, but it also plans to hire Apple store employees. Microsoft has offered Apple store managers “significant raises,” and offered to cover any and all moving expenses. For the record, I'd be willing to work in the Microsoft retail store on Neptune if the company offered to pay my moving expenses!

  • What is Comcast going to do with all its money?

What is Comcast going to do with all its money?

Do you have Comcast stock? Are you concerned with all the money the company has in its coffers? Yes, that sounds ludicrous, being concerned that a company has a lot of money on hand, but the fear is that Comcast could be ramping up for a big media buy, something no one wants to see.

Media companies freaking out because they don’t know how measure TV ratings anymore

So I read late last night that pretty much every TV show this summer has crashed and burned. You can attribute that any number of things. One, it's summer and no one watches TV then. Two, the shows were absolutely terrible. Three, maybe people were watching, but the proliferation of the likes of Hulu have totally messed with Hollywood's ability to actually count how many people watch its shows.

Macrovision just changed its name to Rovi to go with its fancy Liquid on-screen Guide

I've never used a Tivo, but I hear good things, especially with respect to its on-screen guide. I have subscribed to Time Warner Cable and DirecTV, and I can tell you that their on-screen guides are basic at best, junk at worst. There's more than 1,000 channels, and the best you can do is break that into “Sports” and “Entertainment and Music”? Gee, thanks. I bring all of this up because Macrovision (of all people) has said, “You know what, yeah, those on-screen guides could use a new coat of paint, and then some. There has to be more you can do than merely diving those 1,000 channels into “News and Information” and “Movies.” So let's make a new, better guide, tap into the Internet, and call it a day. Oh, and let's also change our name to Rovi.” And it did.

HBO, Cinemax coming to Comcast’s and Time Warner’s TV Everywhere plans

I have to be honest. I didn't think much of the TV Everywhere plans laid out by Comcast and Time Warner last month, but the service sure has my attention now. Soon - like in a few weeks - 5,000 beta testers will be able to watch TBS, TNT, Stars, HBO, and Cinemax content on Fancast.com or Comcast.net along with the content already available from ABC, NBC, FX, and more. Eventually, the plan is to open the service up to all subscribers of Comcast and Time Warner for "no additional cost."

RAWR (it means I LOVE YOU! in Dinosaur), Verizon FiOS

After 10 days of waiting for my Verizon FiOS install, I finally have Internet and cable in my new apartment. Goodbye, Time Warner. You put up a good fight by offering free Showtime for a year and knocking a few bucks off the bill, but I don't care about CallerID on my TV or NY1. RAWR, Verizon FiOS, RAWR. It's certainly not as fast at Nicholas's OOLU, but it's good enough for me. Hit the jump for speeds.
