AT&T making tourists even more annoying with free Times Square WiFi

AT&T's master plan to relieve 3G data congestion in New York City? Give the crush of upward-facing tourists in Times Square free WiFi. AT&T will announce its first ever free outdoor WiFi hotspot later today located at the north central part of Times Square, near 7th Avenue between 45th and 47th Street. Qualifying AT&T customers with smartphones like the iPhone will automatically switch from 3G data to WiFi when in range. Great, just what Times Square needs: smartphone wielding pedestrians enticed by fast data to be even more oblivious to the pace of busy New Yorkers. If successful, AT&T will add WiFi hotspots to other high-traffic areas... and hopefully help push through tourist-lane legislation that could solve NYC's real congestion problems.

Don’t like being on camera? Then don’t go to New York City!

Officials in New York have started laying the groundwork for a gigantic influx of surveillance cameras in Manhattan. This is in response, of course, to the weekend's attempted car bomb attack in Times Square. (Incidentally, I had walked through Times Square the Sunday morning after the situation trying to find Super Street Fighter IV and was shocked at all the cops walking around. I though they were filming a movie or something because I had no idea anything had happened the night before.) So if you're not cool with being on camera all day long, you had better not visit Manhattan.

Video: Crysis 2 debuts in Times Square

Pedestrians in Times Square were treated to the debut trailer of Crysis 2, the next game from Crytek (and publisher EA) that will bring your PC to its knees. Well, unless you’re playing the console version. There’s a countdown timer on some sort of Web site, wonder what that means…

Hands-on with Honda’s U3-X, the amazing people mover

Step aside Segway, because this is amazing. This U3-X is a tiny unicycle like people mover designed for folks with debilitating injuries or problems walking. You sit on it, put your feet on a pair of pedals, and move your body to move forward, backwards, and even side to side. It's amazingly small and lasts one hour on a charge. Jimin and I tried the U3-X in a ballroom in Times Square and both of us came away impressed. It is completely self righting and to ride it you just move your body in the direction you want to go. The wheels-within-wheels system allows for 360-degree motion.

  • So what were the ‘Happy 2010!’ glasses like?

So what were the ‘Happy 2010!’ glasses like?

Happy 2010, people who count from Anno Domini using the Gregorian calendar! I greeted the new year by saying, sometime well after midnight, “Oh, it's 2010 already.” I was playing the PC version of Call of Duty 4, which is demonstrably better than the Xbox 360 version I played two years ago. But that's not the point of this here post. No, for I have one question to ask of the people who did go outside and celebrate: what were the “Happy 2010!” glasses like?

Video: Jimmy Fallon vs Tiger Woods

The story goes like this: Jimmy Fallon challenged Tiger Woods to Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 on the Wii. Jimmy embarrasses Tiger in Times Square. And then both of them made fools of themselves on Late Night. We won't spoil the surprise, but lets just say they both play like crap and our own Doug Aamoth would be happy to conduct a golfing clinic for either one.

Build Your Own Paper New York

These fantastic papercraft models will let you reconstruct a little Big Apple at home. And when we say little, we mean it. The models, which depict landmark New York buildings, come as printed postcards, which means 4-5/8″ x 6-3/4″ in size. You then (carefully) cut them out and stick them together. You can pick the ones you [...]
